Two Baldwin teachers introduce a new club to help middle school students develop social skills
BALDWIN (KDKA) - We've made it to the weekend and if you're planning to be out socializing or making new business connections, you will certainly be making face-to-face, in-person interactions.
Now, at a new club at a local middle school, they're equipping students with the essential skills for success and it all focuses on something right in the palm of our hands.
In a Baldwin classroom, there are no devices, no distractions, just face-to-face interactions. A group of 8th graders are members of the inaugural "Shake Club" and their instructors are on a mission to teach social engagement skills during a critical time in their development.
"We find that kids struggle with how to interact," said Baldwin Assistant 8th Grade Principal Jonathan Peebles. "They're always on their devices and they're not engaged. They don't know how to speak to adults."
So, Mr. Peebles and Mr. Barbano are helping them get a grip - literally.
It was inspired by a program at Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta called "The Amazing Shake" where there's a competition that develops professional skills for the next generation of leaders.
Baldwin's district leaders paid a visit there and brought the cutting-edge curriculum back to town and it's already making a difference.
"Some of my teachers have noticed that I'm more social now," said Jack Hampton, one of the Shake Club members. "It really helped me because I somewhat struggled before I joined the club."
Staff and parents are discovering that there's value in it for adults, as well. From eye contact to voice inflection and posture, they're engaged in real-world scenarios.
A holiday event with senior citizens in their community could have posed a challenge, but for these students, it was no problem.
"They're upfront, putting their hands out, making good eye contact, and they're asking questions, they're interested in learning about them," said Mr. Anthony Barbano. "We're seeing these interactions among our 8th graders in the hallways. The Amazing Shake kids know who each other are so they'll see us and practice their shakes in the middle of the day."
"It helps me approach people more and it makes me feel more comfortable," said Jahein Hope, another Shake Club member.
"It's really important for us to know how to communicate with others, not on social media, but in real life," added Polina Bordulina.
It's a movement emphasizing manners, discipline, and respect and it all began with a simple shake.

The 30 Rock star, 67, spoke with E! News at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards on Monday, June 2 and shared that when it comes to Father's Day in a few weeks, he has only one thing he wants to do. "I'd ride my bike to Virginia," the dad of eight joked. "I'll have a long time with fresh air." Baldwin shares seven of his kids — Carmen, 11, Rafael, 9, Leonardo, 8, Romeo, 7, Eduardo, 4, María Lucía, 4, and Ilaria, 2 — with wife Hilaria Baldwin. He is also dad to 29-year-old daughter Ireland, whom he shares with ex Kim Basinger. "Talk show host," responded daughter Carmen, while son Rafa said, "NFL QB." Other kids want to be an artist/actor, a soccer player and a chef/doctor. While reposting the adorable video, Baldwin hilariously joked about the cost of sending all those kids to school. "The tuition!" he wrote. Scoop: Schatz notches 10th whip endorsement
Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) is endorsing Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) to be the next Senate Democratic whip, the party's no. 2 position in the chamber, Axios has learned. Why it matters: Support is coalescing around Schatz for the gig while other potential candidates are publicly staying out of the race. Baldwin is the 10th Senate Democrat to endorse Schatz since he announced his bid in April. Between the lines: Baldwin, a woman representing a Midwest state, is the type of Democrat who might have been likely to support Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Min.) for whip if Klobuchar entered the race. But Klobuchar, at least publicly, has remained on the sidelines so far. She said in April that it was a "mistake" for Democrats to focus on the race to replace Durbin over a year out from the election. The big picture: Schatz, meanwhile, has been growing his support among Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer's (D-N.Y.) top lieutenants. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) — who, along with Baldwin, is a member of Schumer's leadership roster — has also endorsed Schatz. Booker and Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-Nv.) and Mark Kelly (D-Az.) are part of an internal whip team working to help Schatz win the nomination. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the current Senate Democratic whip, is retiring next year. Schatz also serves as Durbin's chief deputy whip this Congress, a subtle change that caught the eye of Senate insiders earlier this year. What they're saying: "Brian listens to his colleagues, knows how to build consensus, and gets that to deliver for working families, our caucus needs to be united," Baldwin said of Schatz in a statement to Axios.

Officials release video showing when 2 Mifflin Township officers were shot
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A suspect is still on the run after two Mifflin Township police officers were shot on Wednesday night. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office held a news conference on Thursday to show body camera video of how the shooting unfolded. Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said the incident started during a traffic stop by Mifflin Township officers about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Perdue Avenue and Mecca Road, in a part of the Northeast Side that falls outside of Columbus city limits. During the stop, Baldwin said that the passenger in the car, Daveonte Dixon, 21, started to run away. When officers chased after him, Dixon turned and fired, hitting the two officers. When funeral services will take place for Morrow County deputy killed on Memorial Day On Thursday, police continued to search for Dixon, who is on probation. Officials said he should be considered 'armed and dangerous.' Chief Deputy Rick Minerd said Dixon could be anywhere, but they won't stop until he's taken into custody. The warrants for his arrest have been entered nationally. 'There's no rock that you're going to hide under, Mr. Dixon,' Minerd said. 'We're going to bring him to justice.' 'Let's get this bum off the street,' he said. Minerd added that the gun used in the shooting has been recovered, but they believe Dixon may have access to other guns. Anyone who helps Dixon avoid capture will also face charges, he said. Dixon has prior convictions, including burglary and obstruction of justice, and is legally prohibited from carrying a firearm. Those with information are asked to contact law enforcement, with Central Ohio Crime Stoppers offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Baldwin said the driver of the vehicle in the traffic stop cooperated with police, is not considered a suspect, and has been released. The Mifflin Township Police Department has five full-time officers. Mifflin Township said one of the injured officers will be released from the hospital Thursday while another underwent a second surgery Thursday morning and continues to recover.
