Residents wake up to find Jubilee in Fairhope
UPDATE (6 p.m.): You almost have to see it to believe it. Thursday morning, the Eastern Shore woke up to what's known as a Jubilee. 'Never have I seen this, there's thousands of fish there,' Jayson Henderson said. 'We walk out there and, man, there's just, you know, multiple species of fish everywhere catfish, flounder, redfish, speckled trout, crabs.' It happens when there are low oxygen levels in the bay and fish and other marine life rush to the shore looking for air. That's when everyone grabs their nets and buckets to rush and catch them. 'I said, let's grab everything and we have the gear in the Jeep,' Randy Prisco, who came looking for a jubilee, said. 'We came to see. So far we haven't seen any.' Jubilees are rare, but when one happens, word spreads fast around town. 'Everybody just jumps on the phone, calls friends, and before you know it, everybody's down here,' Prisco said. This is only the second reported jubilee this summer on Mobile Bay. People in Fairhope tell WKRG News 5 this one was a good one. 'I caught two of them,' Henderson said. 'I was trying to make sure they were of size because you want to stay legal.' Jubilees can only happen under the right mix of wind, tide and temperature, and you never truly know when they might pop up. 'You never know unless you just go see,' Henderson added. 'So got to be there, right place, right time.' PREVIOUS REPORTING FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Fish washed ashore Thursday morning in Fairhope as part of a Jubilee — a natural phenomenon that only occurs in Tokyo and Mobile Bay. Fairhope mother making remarkable recovery days after shooting According to Dauphin Island Sea Lab Senior Marine Scientist Brian Dzwonkowski, the water in Mobile Bay gets hot during the summer, leading to the water not being able to hold a lot of oxygen. This means that the waves close to the shoreline mix with the oxygen that the fish are looking for, so the fish go right up to shore to get what little oxygen they can. Boy survives Vietnam tourist boat sinking that killed dozens by sheltering in air pocket
A boy survived the sinking of a tourist boat in Vietnam which killed dozens of people by sheltering in an air pocket of the overturned vessel, it has emerged. The 10-year-old had been traveling with his family in Vietnam's famed Ha Long Bay when the vessel they were sailing on became caught in a sudden storm. Trapped in the boat as it capsized, the boy found refuge in an underwater air pocket, where he stayed and waited for help. He was eventually found by rescue teams relatively unharmed, although he was suffering from mental distress. He was warmed up and transferred to a nearby hospital, local outlet VietnamNet reported. 'Everything happened so fast,' the boy said. 'I tried to get out, and then the soldiers rescued me.' Search and rescue efforts are continuing for missing passengers and crew after sightseeing ship the Wonder Sea capsized in a squall on Saturday but have been hampered by bad weather. At least 37 people are confirmed dead from the sinking, state media reported, revising down an earlier toll but warning that it could still rise further. Vietnam News said there were 53 passengers and crew on board and 10 people had been rescued. Another survivor, a 36-year-old Vietnamese man, described escaping the overturned boat by dumping his life jacket and swimming through an underwater window. Fire extinguisher salesman Dang Anh Tuan described the moment the vessel suddenly capsized during bad weather, leaving little time for those on board to react. 'It rained for about 15 minutes, and then the boat started to shake vigorously, tables and chairs were jostled around and seconds later the boat overturned,' Tuan told the Associated Press. He said that the boat quickly filled with water and he lost all orientation. 'I tried to breathe. But more water came in. I took a deep breath, got rid of my life vest and dove down. I saw a streak of light and followed it to swim out, escaping the boat, and then I climbed on the overturned boat to look for help,' he said. Tuan, along with several others who had been on board, clung onto the overturned boat and waited for another two hours in pouring rain until emergency crews arrived. He'd been holidaying in Vietnam's popular tourist bay with 11 university friends. Only three of their group survived. VN Express reported that the Wonder Sea was caught in a storm around 1.30 p.m. local time (2.30 a.m. ET), which caused it to capsize. Most of the passengers were from the Vietnamese capital Hanoi and traveling as families, according to VN Express, which reported the eldest passenger as 53 years old and the youngest as just 3. Over 20 children were on board, VNExpress said. The capsize reportedly happened near the Dau Go Cave – one of the largest in the bay. Halong Bay is a popular tourist hotspot and a UNESCO world heritage site comprising about 1,600 limestone islands and islets. CNN's Eve Brennan, Max Saltman and TuAnh Dam contributed reporting.

Death toll in Texas floods climbs to 108, with more rain expected
Hundreds of rescuers on Tuesday continued their search for people swept away by catastrophic Texas floods that killed more than 100 people, officials said, amid threats of more heavy rain. As of Tuesday morning, authorities in worst-hit Kerr County had recovered the bodies of 87 victims, Sheriff Larry Leitha told reporters. The deceased include at least 27 girls and counselors who were staying at a youth summer camp on the Guadalupe River over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. "At present, five Camp Mystic campers and one counselor still remain unaccounted for," Leitha added. At least 108 flood-related deaths were reported across central Texas, according to local officials. During a Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump said he would travel to Texas with First Lady Melania Trump on Friday, and credited his strong ties with the state's Republican governor as having helped the rescue effort. "We brought in a lot of helicopters from all over... They were real pros, and they were responsible for pulling out a lot of people. And we got them there fast, and Texas had some good ones too, but the response has been incredible," Trump said. Trump, who previously said that disaster relief should be handled at the state level, earlier this week signed a major disaster declaration, activating fresh federal funds and freeing up resources. - 'Extremely treacherous' - Ben Baker with the Texas Game Wardens said search and rescue efforts involving helicopters, drones and dogs were extremely difficult because of the water and mud. "When we're trying to make these recoveries, these large piles can be very obstructive, and to get in deep into these piles, it's very hazardous," Baker said. "It's extremely treacherous, time-consuming. It's dirty work, the water is still there." He added that special attention was being paid to the first responders' mental state, particularly given that the bodies of children were being recovered. In the town of Hunt, the epicenter of the disaster, an AFP team saw recovery workers combing through piles of debris with helicopters flying overhead, as hopes dimmed for finding any survivors. Javier Torres, 24, was digging through mud as he searched for the body of his grandmother, after having located the remains of his grandfather. He also discovered the bodies of two children, apparently washed up by the river. Officials warned that with more heavy rain forecast, recovery efforts would be rendered even more difficult. "We've had some reports of maybe some additional water coming in, obviously, that's going to impact the search and recovery efforts," said Baker. He said the weather may impact aerial patrol patterns, but "it won't deter them." Meanwhile, questions intensified over whether Trump's funding cuts had weakened warning systems, and over the handling of the rescue operation. During an at-times tense news conference, Baker skirted a question on the speed of the emergency response. "Right now, this team up here is focused on bringing people home," he said. Shel Winkley, a weather expert at the Climate Central research group, blamed the extent of the disaster on geography, the remnants of tropical storm Beryl, and exceptional drought, when dry soil absorbs less rainfall. "This part of Texas, at least in the Kerr County flood specifically, was in an extreme to exceptional drought. So that's the worst drought conditions that you can have, and we know that since May, temperatures have been above average," Winkley told reporters. The organization's media director, Tom Di Liberto, said staffing shortages at the National Weather Service had contributed to the disaster. "What happens, and this is shared not only in Texas but weather forecast offices across the country, is that the people with the most experience dealing with these extreme (events), but also communicating it, have left in a lot of places, so you can't necessarily replace that experience," Di Liberto said. bur-chp/md/ksb
