South Africa tour of Australia: Australia vs South Africa first ODI in Cairns on August 19, 2025
Pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out with an ankle injury in a major setback for South Africa just as the three-game ODI series got underway against Australia on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). The Australians, coming off a 2-1 win in the T20 series, won the toss and elected to field in Cairns to start the one-day international portion of the tour. This is the first ODI between the teams since Australia beat South Africa in the 2023 World Cup semifinals. Their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was washed out. Power hitter Dewald Brevis and allrounder Prenelan Subrayen were selected to make their ODI debuts for South Africa, and Temba Bavuma returned for his first match since leading the Proteas to the World Test Championship with a victory over Australia in the final at Lord's. The 30-year-old Rabada underwent scans on Monday which confirmed inflammation in his right ankle. Rabada will stay with the team in Australia and undergo rehabilitation. Kewena Maphaka, who finished as the leading wicket-taker in last week's T20 series, replaced Rabada in the squad but was left out of the playing XI for the first ODI. Marnus Labuschagne returned to the Australian team after being dropped from the recent test series victory in the Caribbean. Australia opted to play Alex Carey as a specialist batter and use Josh Inglis as the wicketkeeper. Lineups Australia: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Aaron Hardie, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood. South Africa: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma (captain), Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Prenelan Subrayen, Nandre Burger, Lungi Ngidi.

Mohun Bagan refuse to release players for India camp
Image credit: Mohun Bagan's X handle KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan Super Giant are on a collision course with the All India Football Federation. A day after crashing out of the Durand Cup, the Indian Super League champions have decided to put their foot down in releasing their players for the ongoing national camp in Bengaluru, citing the Jose Molina-managed team's own preparation of the AFC Champions League Two and dealing a blow to new India coach Khalid Jamil's preparations for the Central Asian Football Association Nations Cup. Of the 35-odd players picked by Jamil for the preparatory camp, Mohun Bagan have seven, the most from a single team. They are Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri, Lalengmawia Ralte 'Apuia', Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, Sahal Abdul Samad and goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! East Bengal have three players — Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh and Naorem Mahesh Singh — called up for the same camp. East Bengal will take a call on releasing the trio after the tournament. India have been invited to play in the CAFA Nations Cup, co-hosted by Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and starting from Aug 29. This will be Jamil's first assignment as India coach. The AIFF had earlier sought cooperation from the clubs to release the players. But it has been learnt that essentially two factors — the federation's 'neglect' towards player welfare and the tournament being held outside the Fifa window — have forced the Bagan management to take a confrontational approach towards AIFF's request. AUS vs SA Live Score, 1st ODI: Latest updates from Australia against South Africa in Cairns - The Times of India
Australia vs South Africa Live Score, 1st ODI: Australia's stand-in ODI captain Mitchell Marsh has indicated the team will maintain their aggressive batting approach as they transition from T20Is to ODIs against South Africa, with the first match scheduled for Tuesday at Cazalys Stadium. Marsh, who led Australia to a 2-1 victory in the T20I series, will continue his captaincy role as regular captain Pat Cummins takes a rest. The Australian team successfully implemented an attacking strategy from the start in the T20I series, though it occasionally resulted in batting collapses. "Getting ready to spend three and a half hours in the field will be a little bit different for a few of the boys. But as a group and as a whole, nothing really changes. (There's a) bit of a mindset change, it's obviously different format. But the same stuff rolls on," Marsh told reporters on Monday. Marsh has experience leading Australia in ODIs, having captained nine times previously, including tours to South Africa in 2023 and England in 2024 when Cummins was unavailable. The Australian captain suggested they might continue their preference for chasing targets in the ODI series, similar to their T20I approach. "It's a bit of a common trend, generally speaking, in T20 cricket these days. You get to assess the conditions, but you also just know what you're chasing. I'm certainly not afraid to bat first. But we have lent towards bowling first. Playing with dew is not something that we're used to in Australia. We saw the ball get really soft in Darwin. That's been a different challenge for us," he elaborated. The ODI series will continue with the second and third matches scheduled at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Friday and Sunday.
