Brother's rescue attempt fails as man swept away by current in Sungai Kuantan
KUANTAN, June 12 — A man with intellectual disabilities is feared to have drowned while bathing in Sungai Kuantan near Kampung Tanah Putih, here yesterday.
Kuantan district police chief ACP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said in the 3 pm incident, Syed Alwi Syd Mohd Ali Hanafiah, 30, had gone to the river with his younger brother to fish.
'Afterwards, the man is believed to have entered the river to bathe and was suddenly swept away by the current before going under. His brother attempted to rescue him but failed,' he said in a statement last night.
He said the search and rescue (SAR) operation began at 7 pm, involving multiple agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Force.
The SAR operation has been suspended for the night and will resume at 8 am today. — Bernama

'All three houses sustained damage to their ceilings and yards, including vehicles parked in front of the properties,' he said in a statement yesterday. Helmi said the incident is believed to be linked to a debt dispute. Two suspects were reportedly seen fleeing the scene in a car, and efforts to track them down are ongoing. Police are urging any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward and assist with the investigation by contacting the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters or Senior Investigating Officer Assistant Superintendent Assan Alimudin at 012-4418081. The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance and Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957.

Singapore, Malaysia police team up to break up illegal horse betting syndicate
SINGAPORE, June 13 — A joint enforcement effort by Singapore and Malaysian police has led to the arrest of 16 people and ongoing investigations into 41 others for their alleged roles in an illegal horse betting syndicate. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a June 12 statement that those arrested — aged between 50 and 78 — are believed to be linked to a criminal syndicate involved in unlawful betting operations. The cross-border operation, carried out on June 11, saw simultaneous raids across Singapore and one in Malaysia. In Singapore, officers from the SPF's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Special Operations Command raided multiple sites, arresting 14 men and one woman. Items seized included cash, mobile phones, gambling paraphernalia, and three bank accounts holding about US$200,000 (RM662,000) suspected to be criminal proceeds. In Malaysia, a 53-year-old Singaporean man was arrested during a raid led by the Royal Malaysia Police's (RMP) CID. He is scheduled to be charged in court on June 13 under the Gambling Control Act. Meanwhile, another 40 men and a woman — aged between 47 and 84 — are being investigated for suspected involvement in illegal betting. Police believe the individuals took on roles as bookmakers, runners, or punters. The SPF conducted checks across various neighbourhoods including King George's Avenue, Jurong Street 24, Ang Mo Kio Street 22, New Upper Changi Road, Yung Sheng Road, Bukit Batok Street 31 and Marsiling Road. Officers seized over US$17,000 in cash, along with mobile phones and betting-related materials during these operations. Under the Gambling Control Act, individuals found guilty of gambling with an unlawful service provider face fines of up to US$10,000, jail time of up to six months, or both. Operators of such illegal betting services can be fined up to US$500,000 and jailed for up to seven years. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation and Intelligence) Zhang Weihan, who also heads the CID, said: 'The police take a serious view of all forms of illegal betting activities and work with counterparts such as the RMP to find criminal syndicates.' He also extended appreciation to Malaysian authorities, saying: 'I would like to thank Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, director of the Criminal Investigation Department of RMP, and his officers for their strong support and commitment in tackling transnational organised criminal groups.' Zhang added that the SPF will continue to partner international agencies 'to detect and dismantle criminal syndicates wherever they choose to operate'.

Shattered dreams: Dad receives daughter's death certificate instead of degree after UPSI bus crash
JERTIH, June 13 — Nearly a year ago, Mohamad Isma Abdul Manaf sent off his eldest daughter, Nur Dalila Farhana, to university with the hope that she would return home with a degree. But fate had other plans. Instead of a degree, today, the 47-year-old father received his daughter's death certificate. Nur Dalila Farhana, 21, was among the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. 'It tore me apart to see my daughter's name on a death certificate. No parent ever wishes to face that, but this is my fate. I have to accept it and stay strong,' he told Bernama after receiving the document from Terengganu National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohamad Nasir Kareem at the family's home in Kampung Bharu Tok Dhor here. Mohamad Isma said that the death certificate in hand would ease matters for him and his wife, Norinda Kasim, 49, in handling other affairs, such as insurance claims and related issues. The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning. The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed.
