Over 10,000 Catholics join St Anne feast night procession in Bukit Mertajam
The procession featured a float carrying the statue of St Anne and her daughter Mary, with devotees walking alongside while holding candles. The 1.6 km route passed through Jalan Kulim, Jalan Kampung Baru, and Jalan Berjaya before returning to the church at 11pm.
For many, the event was a time to fulfill vows and seek divine intervention. R Thivya Bharti, 32, attended with her family after her husband recovered from illness last year. 'We prayed for his health, and by God's grace, he was healed. Now we're here to give thanks and pray for another child,' she said.
Diana Blomindas, 29, from Ipoh, noted the celebrations were livelier this year, with more stalls and visitors. She recalled attending since childhood and came this year to pray for her mother's healing from knee pain.
Valentina Kaur, 28, and her husband joined the procession to express gratitude after conceiving following years of prayers. 'I prayed for a child in March, and two months later, I was pregnant. Tonight, we give thanks and pray for a smooth pregnancy,' she shared.
The feast, themed 'Celebrating, Listening and Walking as Pilgrims of Hope,' began on July 18 with nine days of Novena prayers. The Minor Basilica, built in the 1800s, is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and was elevated to basilica status in 2019. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is focusing on four key projects under its MADANI Adopted Village (KAM) and MADANI Adopted School (SAM) programmes in Pendang, Kedah. In a statement today, NRES said the KAM project, with a budget of RM1 million, covers Kampung Nangka Siam and Kampung Lahar Tunjung, and is expected to be completed by October. Meanwhile, the SAM project, with a RM100,000 allocation, is focused on upgrading facilities at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pokok Asam (SKPA). The KAM initiative includes constructing tube wells as an alternative water source, improving village roads, and upgrading the community hall and cemetery in Kampung Lahar Tunjung, all aimed at creating a sustainable and resilient rural community. On Friday, NRES also organised the KAM Semarak Desa programme at Kampung Nangka Siam, offering various community engagement activities and services. The event, officiated by NRES secretary-general Datuk Dr Ching Thoo a/l Kim, featured cultural performances such as Siamese dance, silat, and muay thai, along with service counters from the Health Ministry, National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad, as well as an elephant show by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. The KAM initiative is supported by a whole-of-government approach, involving several agencies, including the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, Kedah Federal Development Office, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. It aims to uplift the well-being of rural communities by improving basic infrastructure and addressing local development challenges. Under the SAM programme, the RM100,000 allocation for SKPA will fund the maintenance of classroom facilities and support the implementation of a smart classroom, as well as Digital Learning Enhancement activities to equip students with relevant digital skills.

SEREMBAN: A six-year-old boy, D. Devakshean, has made history by identifying 65 different currencies from around the world in just one minute, earning him a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR). His achievement, recognised as 'Most Foreign Currencies Identified by a Child in One Minute,' highlights his extraordinary memory and learning abilities. Devakshean's mother, G. Devamalar, 37, shared that his fascination with national flags began when he was just one year old. By the age of two, he could already name over 200 countries and cities. 'His memory is exceptional—whatever we show him, he remembers. Not just flags and currencies, but many other things too,' she said after the MBR certificate presentation by representative V. Menaga. The young prodigy's parents have nurtured his interests without pressure. 'He loves watching educational content on YouTube, where he learns independently. He prefers reading and learning over playing—it's his passion,' Devamalar explained. The family spent a month preparing before applying for MBR recognition this year. Devakshean, born on September 10, 2019, enjoys Mathematics, English, and Science and dreams of becoming a firefighter. His mother hopes his achievement will lead to more opportunities, including potential recognition by the Guinness World Records. UMS Students Gain Experience As Volunteers At Borneo Flora Festival
LABUAN, July 27 (Bernama) -- About 100 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students are gaining hands-on experience as volunteers at the five-day Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025, which began yesterday. First-year student Muhd Alif Hazim, 21, from the university's main campus, said he travelled to Labuan specifically to volunteer at the inaugural festival. 'This is the biggest event I've joined this year. I wanted to improve my communication skills and meet new people,' said the Computer Science (Data Science) student. He said the Borneo Tropical Flora and the Borneo Rainforest Jewel exhibitions drew strong interest from visitors on the first day, particularly for showcasing various floral species, including tulips, sunflowers, pohon pontianak, and orchids. Siti Aisyah Masyop, 23, a student from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, said this was her first volunteer experience and an opportunity to gain new knowledge and interact with the public. The Selangor-born student said their tasks included giving directions and assisting visitors with taking photographs. 'Visitors have been friendly and we always ask if they need any help. With the large crowd, some may be unsure of where to go,' she said. Third-year student Anne Roza Robin, 22, from the Faculty of International Finance, said she had been involved in the festival since its initial flower-planting phase. Hailing from Keningau, she described the experience as meaningful, especially in preparing herself for the working world.
