Furious footy legend Brad Fittler reveals which players he wants to punish by having them BANNED from playing State of Origin

Daily Mail7 days ago
NRL legend and coach Brad Fittler has reacted to some of the game's biggest stars turning their bac on playing for Australia by campaigning to ban them from the State of Origin arena.
Australia will play England in a three-test Ashes series for the first time in 22 years at the end of the NRL season.
However, there are real fears of a talent drain with Queensland and Dolphins star Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow mulling over a decision on whether to play for the Kangaroos or Samoa.
The slashing fullback played a lone test for Samoa at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup before his career went into orbit.
He has now played 10 matches for the Queensland Maroons and has played six Tests for Australia.
However, Tabuai-Fidow could choose Samoa over Australia, with New South Wales enforcer Payne Haas and Queensland's Tino Fa'asuamaleaui also considering switching their allegiances.
All of them were born in Australia.
There is currently nothing in the rules stopping the stars from making the switch, as Samoa is still considered a Tier 2 nation despite reaching the final of the most recent World Cup.
Players cannot switch between Tier 1 countries under the regulatioons.
Fittler wants that changed, with Origin bans slapped on Tabuai-Fidow, Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui - along with any other Kangaroos who choose to play for their island nation instead.
'The fact is they can go and play for Samoa and still play State of Origin,' he told Radio 2GB.
'State of Origin is the one that everybody loves playing.
'So unless you take State of Origin away from those tier-two nations, then that won't change.
'There's a lot of lobbying going on behind the scenes, especially with a lot of the Polynesian players, trying to get them to go and play for Samoa, Tonga.'
2GB's Adam Hawse suggested that Australian officials should also be hitting the phones, but Fittler didn't agree.
'Yeah, but you know, who wants to be lobbying?' Fittler said.
'Half the time they don't ring you back anyway.
'Who wants to sit there and lobby and ask players do they want to play for the country that has nurtured and educated them, you know?'
In 2017, Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita made headlines by choosing to represent Tonga over New Zealand and Australia for the Rugby League World Cup.
Their shock defections triggered a wave of support, with players like Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Manu Maʻu, and David Fusitu'a also pledging allegiance to Tonga.
The move redefined international rugby league, as Tonga reached the semi-finals and nearly upset England.
Inspired by Tonga's rise, several stars later chose Samoa for the 2022 Rugby League World Cup, including Joseph Suaalii, Brian To'o, Junior Paulo and Jarome Luai.
Samoa went on to reach the final that year, becoming the first tier-two nation to do so.

‘Never watching this nonsense again' rant fans as major league confirms two-team expansion for 2026 season

SUPER LEAGUE clubs have brought forward the expansion to 14 clubs to next season. It was expected the addition of two more sides would not come until 2027, to tie in with the next broadcasting deal. 2 But at a meeting of top flight sides in Leeds today, the majority voted to expand for 2026. It has angered fans, who reacted: "I'm never watching this nonsense again." Another said: "The death has started." But other disagreed, commenting: "Finally! About time. This should have happened years ago." IMG's grading system will decide 12 of the clubs who will make up the larger competition, which will see the end of despised loop fixtures and keeping the 13 home matches. However, two teams others will be chosen by an independent panel. This means those from outside the top 14 can be picked if they do not make the 12, so the prospect of Toulouse Olympique being overlooked is open. And with Salford set to still be relegated despite the expansion, there is the prospect of three clubs, including Bradford, coming up. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK If the Red Devils do stay in, that will mean a miraculous escape after months of chaos under the shambolic ownership of Sire Kailahi and Curtiz Brown. However, a Bulls' return would spark many complaints given the link with new Rugby League Commercial chair Nigel Wood, who headed the "club-led strategic review". Until March, he was chairman at Odsal – the condition of which, with one seated and covered stand - is another source of anger among supporters. And a raising of the overseas quota rules, allowing teams to have ten foreign players from 2026, has raised fears of a dilution of talent across 14 teams. London Broncos, currently 10th in the Championship and Oldham, only promoted from League One last year, are also keen on a place at the top table. A Super League statement said: 'The 12 existing Super League clubs have voted to extend the competition to 14 teams for the 2026 season, subject to conditions. 'This would be done by combining the club grading system introduced to determine Super League membership as part of the sport's long-term strategic partnership with IMG in 2022, with an independent panel to be chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine. 'The top 12 clubs under grading at the conclusion of the 2025 domestic season will therefore be joined by two clubs recommended by that panel – provided the panel judges there are two applications of sufficient merit against the set criteria. 'The Super League clubs have the right to determine the number of the clubs in the competition. 'The possibility of immediate expansion to 14 clubs was one of a number of options put to a meeting of the existing 12 clubs.'

Super League clubs vote to increase number of teams to 14 from next season

Super League clubs have voted to increase the number of teams to 14 from next season. The future structure of the competition was discussed during a meeting at Headingley on Monday afternoon, with a proposal agreed to immediately open up two additional places, provided certain conditions are met. 'The 12 existing Betfred Super League clubs have today voted to extend the competition to 14 teams for the 2026 season, subject to conditions,' a statement from Super League (Europe) Limited read. 'This would be done by combining the Club Grading System introduced to determine Super League membership as part of the sport's long-term strategic partnership with IMG in 2022, with an independent panel to be chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine, who was recently elected as a member of the Rugby Football League Board, and the Strategic Review Sub-Committee. 'The top 12 clubs under grading at the conclusion of the 2025 domestic season will therefore be joined by two clubs recommended by that panel – provided the panel judges there are two applications of sufficient merit against the set criteria. 'Further details of the composition of the panel and the timing of the process will be confirmed in due course.' The new proposals could see Championship teams such as Toulouse Olympique, Bradford Bulls, York Knights and London Broncos considered for a place in the expanded 14-team top-flight. Salford Red Devils, meanwhile, could see their Super League spot for 2026 reviewed under grading given the club's ongoing financial issues.

Super League votes to add two clubs and return to 14-team competition for 2026

Super League will become a 14-team competition again in 2026 after rugby league's elite clubs opted to expand by two teams for the start of next season. The league has operated with 12 teams for the last decade but clubs agreed to the expansion on Monday at a meeting in Leeds which opens the door for at least two Championship teams to join the elite ranks for 2026. The Guardian revealed last month how a strategic review which was being led by Nigel Wood - the former chief executive of the governing body who has since returned as its chair despite being paid more than £300,000 to leave in 2018 - was likely to recommend Super League moved back to a 14-team competition. That was primarily due to the fact that a 27-round regular season is more appealing with 14 teams as it requires no loop fixtures. The move was also due to a fear that Toulouse could finish 12th in the IMG gradings at the end of this year, which would have granted them admission to Super League and left two French clubs in the top division. Wood and a number of clubs felt that would be a backwards step for the game, and thus launched a push to recommend expansion to 14 teams as soon as possible. That move was confirmed on Monday, but with a unique set of circumstances that will lead to the admission of two new teams. The IMG gradings system, which measures clubs in a variety of on and off-field metrics before producing a ranking that determines which teams play in Super League, will determine the top 12 at the end of the season. But two more clubs outside of the 12 highest clubs in the gradings will be selected by an independent panel that will include members of the strategic review committee appointed by Wood. That panel will deem what they believe to be the best two applicants to join the 12 clubs with the highest IMG grading at the end of the season.
