News2420-05-2025

For the second year in a row, a Leon Kluge-designed garden representing South Africa's beauty has won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London.
Kluge and his team won for their entry inspired by the meeting of two oceans - the Atlantic and the Indian - and all the flora in between. The well-respected horticulturalist took to Instagram on Tuesday cradling the team's award.
'Well, it's gold again for South Africa here at the Chelsea Flower show,' a beaming Kluge said at their stand at the prestigious event.
'It was a bit nerve-wracking this morning not knowing what [medal] was going to wait for us at the stand. We are very relieved and very excited about the gold, putting South Africa's flora right at the top of the world stage.'

He thanked their sponsors, Hazendal Wine Estate and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and Cape Flora South Africa as we as all the messages of support from back home.
Much preparation went into preparing this year's garden at what is known as the 'Olympics' of the flower world, with at least 25 000 stems of beautiful flowers and fynbos being cut ahead of their display. The end result was beautiful hues of yellows, purples and pinks showcasing South Africa's unique biodiversity.
This is the second gold for South Africa after it stole the show at last year's event, when the same team won gold with a perfect score for a garden inspired by the windswept slopes of the Cape mountains. The team was also awarded 'Best Exhibit in the Pavilion' and the 'Best New Design' in 2024.
South Africa's Babylonstoren also had a Karoo Succulent Garden displayed at the show this year for the first time.

The team worked in partnership with its sister estate, The Newt in Somerset in the UK, to bring a little piece of the Karoo to the world. The Newt in Somerset has been the headline sponsor of the event for the past four years, and the succulent garden served as a showstopper for the attending visitors.
Babylonstoren's master botanist Dr Ernst van Jaarsveld told News24 that Karoo succulents could teach many things to the world, and was well-suited to represent South Africa's resilience.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is open from Tuesday to Saturday this May.

Oscar Pistorius, former Olympian convicted of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's murder, returns to racing

Johannesburg — South African former Olympic and paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius has competed in his first race 12 years after murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, a double leg amputee who has been free on parole since January 2024, competed in an Ironman triathlon in Durban over the weekend. Official results show he clocked a time of 5:56:39, coming in 555th of all participants but taking a third-place medal in the physically challenged category. The grueling Isuzu IRONMAN 70.3 race consisted of a 1.24-mile swim, 55.9-mile bike ride and 13-mile run. South African former Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius competes in a triathlon event, 12 years after murdering his girlfriend and a year after his release on parole, in the coastal city of Durban, South Africa, June 1, 2025. Michael Fragoeiro/REUTERS Dubbed "Blade Runner" for his carbon fiber prosthetic legs, Pistorius, now 38, was once the darling of the athletic world, competing in both the Olympics and Paralympics as well as touring the U.S. and appearing on many major talk shows. In August 2012, he became the first double-amputee to compete at the Olympics in London, where he made it to the 400-meter semifinal against fully abled athletes. But the adoration and media attention turned abruptly to global shock on Valentine's Day 2013 when his girlfriend, 29-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp, was fatally shot multiple times through the locked bathroom door at Pistorius' home in a gated community in Pretoria. Pistorius testified during his highly publicized and televised court case that he had mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar. Three of his four shots hit Steenkamp. He was convicted of murder and eventually sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison. He spent nine years behind bars in Pretoria before his release, and he will remain on parole until 2029. Conrad Dormhel, a lawyer for Pistorius, confirmed to the Reuters news agency that his client had participated in the race. Pistorius has lived at his uncle's home in Pretoria since his release.

Three Cape Town restaurants make the World's Best list for 2025

Three Cape Town spots have been named in the top 100 World's Best Restaurant's list, solidifying its reputation as the best South African city to dine in. La Colombe (55), FYN (82) and Salsify (a new entry at 88) all made the list, with La Colombe making it's 6th appearance, and FYN making it's 5th. Each year, the World's 50 Best Restaurants list highlights 50 exceptional dining establishments, accompanied by an extended list ranking restaurants from 51 to 100. Previously, Paternoster restaurant Wolfgat made the cut, peaking at number 50 in 2021. The co-owner of Salsify, Ryan Cole, told News24 Food that the ranking was a result of years of graft from his team. 'It's incredible to be recognised on a world stage, it's a testament to years of commitment and hard work. I don't think you can ever expect something like this.' Salsify also took home the coveted Eat Out Restaurant of the Year award for 2025 in March. Salsify head chef Nina du Toit told News24 Food that their accolades this year were not an overnight success story, but rather 'a culmination of the last six years of consistent hard work and innovation, always pushing to be better'. 'I am so proud of what we have accomplished, it has been a dream to be on the list,' she added. 'This is a celebration of the whole team - from our kitchen and service brigades to our foragers, farmers, fishermen and ceramicists. FYN is the product of a deeply collaborative ecosystem, and this recognition is for everyone who plays apart in creating the FYN experience. We are very grateful.' FYN is also the only establishment in Africa to receive a top-tier three-star rating from the Food Made Good Standard in 2025 - the global benchmark for ethical hospitality. It is also the only stand-alone restaurant on the continent to have been inducted into the Relais & Châteaux association. Cape Town was crowned the World's Best Food City in the 2024 Conde Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards, beating out culinary hotspots like Tokyo, Rome, and Porto. The 2025 World's 50 Best Restaurants ceremony will be held in Turin, Italy, on 19 June.
