Jefferson Community College awarded $4M toward $13M project to keep transitioning soldiers in area

Yahoo30-04-2025
Apr. 30—WATERTOWN — Empire State Development has announced a $4 million award that will support a $13 million project at Jefferson Community College aimed at keeping Fort Drum soldiers and their spouses in the area upon completion of their military service.
The Dulles Building on JCC's Coffeen Street campus will be renovated and outfitted as the Next Move NY Vocational Training and Job Readiness Facility, which will enhance offerings at the college and further develop the workforce pipeline for transitioning soldiers and their spouses to attain them attain local employment, according to ESD.
The award is part of the $10 million Next Move NY Initiative developed by the North Country Regional Economic Development Council and announced by Gov. Kathleen C. Hochul in December 2023.
Advocate Drum will also receive a $600,000 grant for development of its planned Live, Love, Stay Program, which will be focused on getting soldiers and their families to consider putting down roots in the north country after they separate from service, and to build careers and futures in the region.
"ESD and the North Country REDC are working hard to build a workforce pipeline for transitioning Fort Drum soldiers to New York's job market," said Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said in a statement. "These awards to JCC's Next Move NY Vocational Training and Job Readiness Facility and Advocate Drum's Next Move NY Live, Love, Stay Program will help keep veterans in New York State, fuel economic growth and open new opportunities in the region."
According to ESD, as the closest academic institution to Fort Drum, JCC is well-positioned to offer new, high-demand programming in engineering technology, mechatronics, advanced manufacturing and the skilled trades.
The college will renovate and outfit the Dulles Building to accommodate such programming. ESD said the investment aims for an anticipated 13% increase in JCC enrollment overall, 45% increase in veteran and active-duty enrollment and a 15% increase enrollment for soldiers/spouses transitioning from Fort Drum.
The renovated facility and investment will also enable JCC to develop educational programs in critical workforce and trade skills areas, addressing the needs of regional employers, while supporting transitioning military members and their families.
"We are honored to receive this significant support through the Next Move NY initiative," JCC President Dan Dupee said in ESD's statement. "This investment will allow us to establish a state-of-the-art Job Readiness Facility dedicated to supporting Fort Drum soldiers, veterans, and their families as they transition to civilian life. This facility will not only strengthen our college but also bolster the regional workforce and create new pathways for success in high-demand careers."
With its grant, Advocate Drum — also known as Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization or FDRLO — will work with the Development Authority of the North Country to establish the administrative framework to implement the Next Move NY Live, Love, Stay Program.
According to ESD, it is hoped that by working with local partners to highlight the various cultural and recreational amenities the North Country has to offer, soldiers and their families can see themselves as part of the community and decide to transition to civilian employment locally after their military service is completed.
Advocate Drum will also work with Adirondack North Country Association to provide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programming for local businesses interested in welcoming, hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.
"Advocate Drum is very excited to be a partner in the Next Move NY program, helping retain the talented transitioning soldiers and their families here in the North Country," Advocate Drum Executive Director Michael S. McFadden said in the statement. "I can't think of a better way to grow our local workforce than to recruit some of America's best, our former Soldiers and families of the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum."
Both the JCC and Advocate Drum projects are priorities outlined by the North Country REDC in the Next Move NY initiative. DANC was previously awarded $3.94 million to establish the administrative framework to implement the Next Move NY regional plan and to help build the most robust transitioning soldier and spouse retention pipeline in the country.
DANC is also establishing an office at 124 Franklin St. in JCC's $3 million education and entrepreneurial center, called The Nest, to assist Fort Drum soldiers and spouses with accessing Next Move NY offerings.
Fort Drum is the largest Army installation in the Northeastern U.S. and New York state's largest single site employer, with nearly 15,000 active-duty service members.

Ontario couple loses nearly $4,000 after booking Jamaican anniversary trip — how to avoid a similar mistake

It's been scientifically proven that being in love affects the way you think, meaning the term 'rose-colored glasses' has at least some basis in fact. For an Ontario couple hoping to celebrate their first wedding anniversary in Jamaica, apparently being lovestruck might affect your trip booking abilities too. In March, Lizanne Hamstali of London, ON, attempted to book a resort stay with flights included for her and her husband on Expedia, but it turns out she missed a crucial detail: the package only included the hotel stay. She cancelled 10 minutes later, but unfortunately the trip was non-refundable and she was on the hook for the $4,183 spent on the trip, she told CTV News. "We spent the whole year saving for (this trip) and for something such as a simple as a mistake, you just lose it all,' Hasmatali said. Don't Miss Want an extra $1,300,000 when you retire? It might be the RBC® British Airways Visa Infinite, with a $1,176 first-year value. Compare it with over 140 more in 5 seconds To clarify why Hamstali found herself in this predicament, an Expedia spokesperson explained how the '...decision whether or not to allow additional flexibility [regarding refunds] is up to the hotel, and Expedia follows our hotel partners' policies for cancellations and refunds." Thankfully, after CTV and Ontario's travel regulator reached out to Expedia, the company gave the couple a full refund. But the stress of potentially losing thousdands on a vacation does prompt the question: How can you avoid making the same mistake? Stretch your savings further — get cash back or travel perks with the right credit card. The offers a first-year value of $1,176. — your future self will thank you! How to avoid booking accidents No matter how excited you might be about booking a future vacation, you need to be fully alert when browsing through the bountiful options at your disposal. Here are some tips to help you avoid the booking accident this Ontario couple faced: Read the fine print: Get out a magnifying glass if you have to and pay attention to the terms and conditions of your stay. This is where you'll notice if the booking is refundable or not. Get a travel agent involved: If you're too busy to do the homework required to book a trip the right way, get someone to help do it for you. A travel agent can handle all the fine details while you daydream until the flight. Check the brand you're booking with: If anything does go wrong, it's important to know the reputation of the company you're booking with. Look into their recent reviews to see how they treat customers who run into issues. Read more: 'You're going to live on beans and rice': This senior told Dave Ramsey she has debt and zero savings — Protecting yourself during a trip Research from the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) found that 71% of Ontarians feel that travel has become increasingly more complex post-pandemic. Additionally, 65% of survey respondents indicated they were concerned about protecting the money they spent. One way to alleviate this concern is booking trip cancellation insurance. That said, not all insurance is created equal. Some plans have a 'cancel for any reason provision' that allows you to back out of a pre-paid vacation for any reason at all. But, you're likely looking at higher costs for that type of coverage. Standard cancellation insurance is included on a number of the best travel credit cardsin Canada. To compare credit cards with the best options, check out the free and fast credit card comparison tool. You can also purchase travel insurance, separately, through a number of insurance companies. Just be sure to read the fine print, especially the 'description of coverage' section. That lays out in which situations you can get reimbursed for cancelling a trip. If a certain event you're in isn't listed, it isn't covered. Deciding whether to pay for cancellation insurance isn't a simple process. For the couple that had a cancellation scare, they mentioned how it took them a year to save up for the trip. Consider how long it took you to save up for a trip you're booking — would you be willing to double that timeframe to save the cost of insurance if something did go wrong? How to be a travel-booking genius Knowing how to book without making a mistake is the first part of learning to book trips correctly. Here are some stratetegic tips to help you become a travel-booking genius: Always confirm before paying: Never give out your credit card number before you know your trip plans, costs and policies inside and out. Review terms and conditions: Even if you have comprehensive travel insurance, you need to know when it will and won't kick in. Always review the t&c's of your hotel stays, flights, cruises and other trip bookings. Don't go with the first option: There are hundreds of options when it comes to booking a vacation. Take the time to review multiple companies offering the same booking. There's a good chance you'll find a similar trip at a lower price. Live Nation beats revenue estimates on red-hot concert demand

(Reuters) -Ticketmaster-parent Live Nation Entertainment beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter revenue on Thursday, driven by strong demand for concerts. The results signal continued resilience and growth in the live entertainment industry amid economic uncertainty. Fans are still willing to spend on live experiences such as concerts and events, helping Live Nation Entertainment — a bellwether for discretionary consumer spending and the health of the global entertainment market. "Global expansion continues to drive touring growth, with fan attendance hitting new highs and ticket buying strong at every price point from VIP to the back row," CEO Michael Rapino said in a statement. "To meet this momentum, we're expanding our global venue portfolio and investing in the artists who make it all possible." The company reported a 16% surge in revenue to $7.01 billion, beating analysts' average estimate of $6.84 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The majority of its revenue, or about $5.95 billion, came from the concerts business, which consists of merchandise sales and the production of live music events, followed by $742.7 million from ticketing. Live Nation's total estimated events in the April-to-June period fell about 2.6% to 14,292 from last year, but 44.2 million fans attended its shows — compared with 22.3 million in the previous quarter. Total estimated tickets sold in the quarter ended June 30 stood at 155.8 million, compared with 155.1 million in the first quarter. Live Nation said tariffs are expected to have minimal impact on its venue investment costs, festival supply chain and other expenses. The company's quarterly profit came in at 41 cents per share, compared with $1.03 per share a year earlier. Its adjusted operating income stood at $798 million, compared with estimates of $756.1 million.

Nerdy Announces Second Quarter 2025 Financial Results

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nerdy Inc. (NYSE: NRDY) today announced financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025. 'Q2 proved that our Live+AI™ strategy is a growth engine,' said Chuck Cohn, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Nerdy. 'We reignited Learning Membership revenue growth, beat our EBITDA guidance, and are now rolling out AI-native tools that give every learner and educator real-time superpowers—putting us firmly on track for profitability in Q4.' Please visit the Nerdy investor relations website to view the Nerdy Q2 Shareholder Letter on the Quarterly Results Page. Second Quarter Financial Highlights: Revenue In Line with Expectations – In the second quarter, Nerdy delivered revenue of $45.3 million, within our guidance range of $45 to $48 million, which represented a decrease of 11% year-over-year from $51.0 million during the same period in 2024. Consistent with expectations, revenue declined when compared to the prior year period primarily due to lower Institutional revenue and a specific $3.0 million state-funded Consumer revenue program in Q2 2024 that did not recur in Q2 2025. These impacts were partially offset by higher ARPM in our Consumer business as a result of a mix shift to higher frequency Learning Memberships and price increases enacted during the first quarter of 2025, coupled with higher retention in newer cohorts due primarily to improvements in the user experience and new Expert incentives. We expect consolidated revenue growth will accelerate sequentially each quarter throughout 2025. Consumer Learning Membership Returns to Growth – Second quarter Learning Membership revenue increased 4% year-over-year. Revenue recognized in the second quarter from Learning Memberships was $37.8 million and represented 84% of total Company revenue. As of June 30, 2025, there were 30.6 thousand Active Members, and ARPM was $348, which represented a 24% increase year-over-year. We expect Learning Membership revenue growth will accelerate sequentially each quarter throughout 2025 as the mix shift towards higher frequency and higher priced Learning Memberships is combined with the improvements in the user experience and improved retention in newer cohorts. Institutional Strategy – Institutional delivered revenue of $7.3 million and represented 16% of total Company revenue during the second quarter. The integration of Live+AI™ capabilities into our institutional offerings is resonating strongly with district leaders who desire data-driven insights to optimize learning outcomes and resource allocation. Varsity Tutors for Schools executed 50 contracts, yielding $4.9 million of bookings, an increase of 21% year-over-year. Our strategy to introduce school districts to the platform and ultimately convert them to our fee-based offerings continues to produce results by delivering 36% of paid contracts and 50% of total bookings value in the second quarter. Varsity Tutors signed the White House 'Investing in AI Education' pledge in June. The four-year commitment will broaden AI literacy, accelerate student academic growth, and give every Learner a path to success while preserving the essential human connection in teaching. Gross Margin – Gross margin was 61.5% for the three months ended June 30, 2025, compared to a gross margin of 65.7% during the comparable period in 2024. The decrease in gross margin was primarily due to Expert incentives enacted during the fourth quarter of 2024. Following the adoption of the new incentives, we are seeing faster time to the first session, more sessions in the first 30 days, lower tutor replacement rates, and higher retention – all of which should continue to strengthen our business over the long-term. In addition, gross margin for the second quarter improved sequentially quarter-over-quarter as a result of price increases for new Consumer customers enacted during the first quarter of 2025. We expect to deliver sequential quarterly gross margin improvements as we move throughout 2025. Path to Profitability – Our second quarter performance reinforces confidence in our path to profitability. As a reminder, in the first quarter, we reduced headcount by approximately 16% as compared to December 31, 2024. Headcount restructuring changes were primarily enabled by AI-enabled productivity improvements, coupled with new software-driven processes and system implementations. Headcount restructuring and other cost reduction efforts have enabled us to generate operating efficiencies and remove significant costs from the business. We believe these results, together with a positive inflection in newly-acquired and active Monthly Recurring Revenue in June, keep us firmly on the path to profitability on a non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA basis in the fourth quarter. Adjusted EBITDA Loss Beats Guidance Range – Net loss was $12.0 million in the second quarter versus a net loss of $14.4 million during the same period in 2024. Excluding non-cash stock compensation expenses, which were treated as an adjustment for non-GAAP measures, non-GAAP adjusted net loss was $4.5 million for the second quarter of 2025 compared to a non-GAAP adjusted net loss of $3.1 million in the second quarter of 2024. We reported a non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA loss of $2.7 million for the second quarter of 2025, beating our guidance of negative $3.0 million to negative $6.0 million. This compares to a non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA loss of $2.1 million in the same period one year ago. Non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA outperformance relative to guidance was primarily driven by across-the-board P&L improvements via higher gross margin, coupled with lower marketing and G&A spend. Compared to last year, our non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA loss was worse primarily due to lower revenues and gross margin, partially offset by lower marketing spend, headcount reductions, and lower G&A spend. Liquidity and Capital Resources – With no debt and $36.7 million of cash on our balance sheet, we believe we have ample liquidity to fund the business and pursue growth initiatives. Third Quarter and Full Year 2025 Outlook: Today, we are introducing third quarter guidance and updating full year guidance. Revenue Guidance: For the third quarter of 2025, we expect revenue in a range of $37 million to $40 million. For the full year, we expect revenue in the range of $191 million to $197 million. Non-GAAP Adjusted EBITDA Guidance: For the third quarter of 2025, we expect a non-GAAP Adjusted EBITDA Loss in a range of $11 million to $13 million. For the full year, we expect a non-GAAP Adjusted EBITDA loss in the range of $13 million to $17 million. Liquidity and Capital Resources: We expect to end the year with no debt and cash in the range of $30 to $35 million, and believe we have ample liquidity to fund the business and pursue growth initiatives.
