'Not same as Swastika': Virgina enacts law to criminalize display of Nazi symbols; to prioritize ‘Hakenkreuz' instead
The state of Virginia in the US has enacted a new law criminalizing the display of Nazi symbols, marking a win for accuracy and religious freedom and equitable treatment for 'Dharmic communities' as per the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA).
Virginia has officially enacted the House Bill 2783 which distinguished between 'Hakenkreuz' the German word for 'Hooked Cross' and the sacred symbol of Swastika revered by many religions.
'The nuance in this law was the result of a united grassroots campaign from community leaders and Viriginia residents, alarmed at the terms of the original bill which had threatened prison terms for displaying a symbol that is almost ubiquitous in our temples and houses.
This is the power of advocacy,' said ConHNA through a post on X.
'We are pleased to see how Virginia is tackling growing hate while being sensitive to minority groups that revere the Swastika', said the president of CoHNA. 'Now the need of the hour is for the media, law enforcement, and educational institutions in Virginia to update their language to reflect this critical nuance and ensure fair treatment for all,' he added.
Initially, the bill had incorrectly equated the Nazi symbol to the Swastika, as per CoHNA. Despite concerns, the bill passed unanimously in the Virginia House of Delegates with a 97-0 vote.
The billll also explicitly defines 'Nazi Swastika' is not the 'same as symbol of peace and prosperity used by Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, or Native American religions.'
'By explicitly delineating the legal status of the Swastika, the statute not only condemns and prohibits its misuse as a symbol of hatred, but also affirms and honors its sacred meaning within Hinduism and other Dharmic traditions. In doing so, the Commonwealth of Virginia sets a precedent for a more informed, respectful, and inclusive civic discourse', said Srilekha Palle a member of the Board of Directors at the American Hindu Coalition.

This administration have been very clear that they are focused on peace. The US President is focused on peace. This is part we're going to continue to work for the Indo-Pacific as well,' she added. During the meeting, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised the issue of terrorism and referred to India's recent military action, Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. 'A word about terrorism in light of our recent experience. The world must display zero tolerance. Victims and perpetrators must never be equated and India has every right to defend its people against terrorism and we will exercise that right. We expect our Quad partners to understand and appreciate that,' Jaishankar said. He also underlined India's continued commitment to the strategic aims of the Quad. 'I am very pleased to be back in DC for the second time this year for Quad's Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and let me begin by saying we are all committed to ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. In their joint statement, the Quad ministers strongly condemned terrorism in all forms and called for action against the perpetrators of the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. 'The Quad unequivocally condemns all acts of terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism, and renews our commitment to counterterrorism cooperation. We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen while injuring several others. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and extend our heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery to all those injured,' the statement said. Speaking about Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar reiterated that India would not hesitate to act against terrorism and those who enable it. 'The perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable; they must be brought to justice and that's important because we have to communicate to the world that what we did on May 7, the objective of Operation Sindoor, is that if there are terrorist attacks, we will act against the perpetrators, the supporters, and the enablers. "No dissatisfaction in our party," says MP Rajashekar Hitnal, backing Siddaramaiah as CM for five years
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 2 (ANI): Congress MP Rajashekar Basavaraj Hitnal on Wednesday said that a notice had been issued to Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain and confirmed that further action would be taken against him. He dismissed reports of internal dissent within the Congress and affirmed that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would remain in office for the full five-year term. 'A notice has already been given to Iqbal Hussain, it is not just a notice, action will be taken against him... There is no dissatisfaction in our party... Siddaramaiah will be the CM for five years,' Hitnal said. The remarks come after Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain publicly backed Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. On July 1, Hussain had said, 'Undoubtedly, 200 per cent, he (DK Shivakumar) will be the CM (of Karnataka) within two months... If the party wants to survive, if we want to see Congress in power in 2028, we need a change. We need a good administration. This is the right time... Shivakumar has given a wonderful contribution to the party... He should be made the CM for Congress to come to power in 2028. This is the opinion of most MLAs. We have to think about our future and our party also... This is the right time to bring DK Shivakumar as the CM...' Message of Operation Sindoor conveyed with great clarity: EAM
Washington DC [US], July 2 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that the 'main objective' of Operation Sindoor was to show the world that if there are terrorist attacks, India will stand against the perpetrators, supporters and the enablers of it adding that the message of the operation was conveyed with great clarity during his meeting with his counterparts of QUAD. 'With each of my counterparts, I have shared with them the sense that the nature of the terrorists challenge, the fact that we have confronted it over multiple decades and that we are very resolved today to respond to it very firmly and we have the right to defend ourselves,' Jaishankar said during a press conference in US. The EAM is on a visit to the United States to attend the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting (QFMM). US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeshi Iwaya, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong were also present for the meeting. Talking about Operation Sindoor, which was India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Jaishankar added, 'The perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable, they must be brought to justice and that's important because we have to communicate to the world that what we did on May 7, the objective of Operation Sindoor is that if there are terrorist attacks, we will act against the perpetrators, the supporters, the enablers. That message was conveyed with great clarity.' The Minister also appreciated the all-party delegation sent by India to brief various countries about the Operation and to expose Pakistan's support for terrorism. 'I have spoken about the all-party delegations in very much value and appreciate what they serves our national interest. When you have a broadband set of people who speak with one voice abroad, it conveys a strong message of national unity. It underlines a certain seriousness about responding to terrorism,' he added. Operation Sindoor emerged as a calibrated military response to an evolving pattern of asymmetric warfare, one that increasingly targets unarmed civilians along with military personnel. The terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam in April 2025 served as a grim reminder of this shift. India's response was deliberate, precise, and strategic. Without crossing the Line of Control or international boundary, Indian forces struck terrorist infrastructure and eliminated multiple threats, government in a release stated. (ANI)
