Indiana Jones whip snaps up $525,000 at auction after 'Citizen Kane' sled goes for $14.75 million

Independent18-07-2025
A whip wielded by Harrison Ford in ' Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' that once belonged to Princess Diana has sold at auction for $525,000.
Thursday's sale came a day after the Rosebud sled from 'Citizen Kane' went for a staggering $14.75 million, making it one of the priciest props in movie history.
They were part of the Summer Entertainment Auction being held all week by Heritage Auctions.
Heritage says the overall take has made it the second-highest grossing entertainment auction of all time, and there's still a day to go.
Yet to be up for bids are Macaulay Culkin's knit snow cap from 'Home Alone,' a Kurt Russell revolver from 'Wyatt Earp,' a pair of 'Hattori Hanzo' prop swords from 'Kill Bill Vol. 1" and a first edition set of Harry Potter novels signed by J.K. Rowling.
The whip sold Thursday was used during the Holy Grail trials that Ford's character goes through at the climax of 1989's 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.'
Ford gave it to then-Prince Charles at the film's U.K. premiere. It was given as a gift to Princess Diana, who gave it to the current owner, who was not identified. The buyer also was not identified.
'The bullwhip is the iconic symbol of an iconic character of cinema history, Indiana Jones, and has been a highlight of this auction," Joe Maddalena, Heritage's executive vice president, said in a statement to The Associated Press.
The $525,000 price includes the 'buyers premium' attached to all auction items for the house that sells it.
Heritage said the nearly $15 million bid for the Rosebud sled puts it second only to the $32.5 million that Judy Garland's ruby slippers from 'The Wizard of Oz' fetched in December. Neither of those buyers were identified either.
The sled was sold by longtime owner Joe Dante, director of films including 'Gremlins.'
'Rosebud' is the last word spoken by the title character in director Orson Welles ' 1941 film 'Citizen Kane,' and the hunt for its meaning provides the film's plot. Many critics have regarded it as the best film ever made.
Long thought lost, the sled is one of three of the prop known to have survived. Dante stumbled on it when he was filming on the former RKO Pictures lot in 1984. He wasn't a collector, but knew the value of the sled and quietly preserved it for decades, putting it as an Easter egg into four of his own films.
Dante's friend and mentor Steven Spielberg paid $60,500 for another of the sleds in 1982, and anonymous buyer paid $233,000 for the third in 1996.

Tina O'Brien packs on the PDA with her new interior design mogul boyfriend Adam Fadlé - after debuting romance at Jack P. Shepherd's wedding

Things appear to be getting serious between Tina O'Brien and her new interior design mogul boyfriend Adam Fadlé. The pair were seen packing on the PDA outside their Manchester hotel on Sunday morning after debuting their romance publicly at Jack P. Shepherd's wedding the night before. Coronation Street star Tina, 41, and businessman, 38, reportedly met through friends in their home town of Cheshire this summer and have been on a string of dates - following her split from her husband of seven years, Adam Crofts. The TV star, dressed in a black mini dress with a striped blazer and white Adidas trainers, looked happy and relaxed as the couple kissed while wheeling their luggage from the hotel. Adam - who bears a striking resemblance to her ex - is the founder of interior design firm Panoramic Properties, which boasts big names including Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo as clients. Outside the hotel he cut a casual figure in a black T-shirt and chinos as he planted a kiss on his new girlfriend. Earlier this month a source The Sun of their romance: 'Tina fell out of love with one Adam and then fell in love with another. 'She's been on a few dates with him and they've been very open with their relationship. They were out last week snogging like teenagers and they've been seen walking her dog by locals. 'Tina looked totally mad for Adam and they couldn't keep their hands off each other.' MailOnline contacted Tina's representatives for comment at the time. It was revealed earlier this year that the Corrie star had split from her husband after weeks of speculation. The estranged couple, who share ten-year-old son Beau, are said to be 'on good terms' for the sake of their son but their differing lifestyles reportedly drove them apart. Last week MailOnline revealed that Tina's partner Adam is the founder of interior design firm Panoramic Properties, which boasts big names including Paul Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo as clients. Adam started his company back in 2010 from a spare bedroom in his parents home, and is now on track to become a millionaire, sharing in a previous interview that he fell in love with interior design at university. The practice specialises in luxury high-end residential interior design, and since its inception has amassed an array of celebrity clients. Sources have claimed that Tina and Adam have enjoyed a string of dates together after meeting through friends in Cheshire. Last month, it was reported that Tina had split from her husband Adam after seven years of marriage, after she was spotted without her wedding ring. Since starting his interior design firm, Adam has shared glimpses of his jet-setting lifestyle on social media, enjoying luxurious trips to Dubai, Bali and Sri Lanka. He previously revealed that one of his first big clients was Manchester City star Emmanuel Adebayor, working on several homes for him in London and Africa. This then led to him working with other Manchester-based players, such as Pogba and Yaya Touré. Adam's work on Pogba's former property showed lavish additions including a vast walk-in wardrobe, colourful graffiti in the bathroom and a football practice space decorated with fractured lighting panels. An image Pogba himself posted in 2021, showed him playing on table football in his games room, which was complete with a personalised pool table. Behind him, there is a wall of memorabilia from his career, with his indoor football pitch also boasted his initials as part of the quirky decor. Speaking to Manchester Evening News in 2022, Adam also revealed that he worked with Ronaldo to design properties for him during his time at United, after one of his clients rented out a home to the Portuguese star. He said of working with the footballing legend: 'Obviously Ronaldo's huge and he's got the most followers on Instagram in the world so you can't really get much bigger than him. 'We now deal with Ronaldo directly and make sure that he's looked after and everything is catered for him in his Manchester property. 'We also work with a lot of captains of industries which extends to a couple of billionaires. We've got some fantastic clients and we get to do some amazing, exciting projects all over the world where we can push the boat out in terms of our bespoke designs.' Panoramic Properties also won an award for the 'world's most luxurious home cinema' at The International Property Awards, and featured in The World's Leading Design Names in 2023. Adam also previously shared hopes to expand his business by opening new offices in Dubai and London. He told The Design Society: 'These include a range of high-end private residence refurbishments, a new build apartment block consisting solely of multi-million pound luxury apartments, several properties overseas, as well as ongoing work with our wonderful clients whom have been with us from the beginning.' He certainly seems to make the most of his time in the UAE, with social media snaps showing him enjoying luxurious yacht trips, private plane rides, and nights out at the boxing with loved ones. Adam's interior design success has only added to his bank balance, with documents filed to Companies House revealing his business boasts over £554,000 in assets. Tina met Crofts in a Manchester coffee shop in 2011 and the couple tied the knot in a surprise NYE ceremony in 2018. The star - who plays Sarah Platt in the ITV show - first sparked split rumours when she shared a photograph of herself at co-star Colson Smith's leaving party in Manchester. Taking to Instagram, Tina cut a glamorous figure in a red mini dress and posed with a bare ring finger on display, just weeks after jetting off on holiday without Crofts. She further fuelled the speculation as she was seen with a notably bare finger while out for a cup of tea in Cheshire. He worked with footballer Paul during his time at Manchester United, transforming the interior of his £3 million mansion in Cheshire Friends then revealed the split as they said: 'Tina and Adam have ended their relationship and are spending some time apart. 'They moved house at Christmas and have decided to live separately for the time being. The insider told The Sun: 'Adam and Tina lead very different lives - he is really into his fitness, while she really enjoys going out with her mates and having a dance, which just isn't for him. 'It wasn't an issue at first because they were head over heels, but as the kids have started to grow up it's become more noticeable. Adam likes a quiet life and unfortunately that just isn't Tina.'

People are just realizing they've been using Stanley Cups all wrong

Although a Stanley Cup seems like it would have a pretty straightforward owner's manual, fans of the cult classic are finally taking a look at tips to use the product - and realize they have been drinking from it all wrong. A TikToker recently shared online that when he looked at the care instructions, he realized he's never preheated or cooled his water bottle. Oliver posted a video to the platform with his blue Stanley Cup and informed his followers that they had to preheat or precool the water bottle before filling it up with their favorite beverage. He explained that to get the best experience out of the popular water bottle, the cup should be filled first with hot or cold water, left to sit out for a few minutes, and then emptied before the beverage is poured in. 'If you own one of these - nine times out of ten, you're using it wrong,' Oliver said, with his bright blue Stanley Cup in hand. He explained that he found the instructions and was about to throw them away when he saw the little-known tip. Oliver was shocked to read the tip and asked his followers if anyone was preheating or precooling their Stanley Cups. 'We don't read contracts for home or car purchases... we definitely ain't reading Stanley directions,' one commenter joked. 'Stanley need to pay you because no one in America reads manuals or directions,' another joked. 'I guess that's what we get for buying things that are 'trendy!' lol,' a third added. However, some said that they did similar processes with their water bottles, as one noted, 'I have a yeti and do this every use! Makes it hotter or colder longer.' 'I fill it with ice and put it in the fridge overnight before adding my water. And the ice won't melt for at least 3 days,' another shared. Some commenters even went as far as slamming Stanley Cup for not creating a better product. 'Those things are $50. They need to use better materials. That's insane,' one said. 'That's crazy, you gotta activate the cup smh [shaking my head],' a second joked. Despite the surprise of many, the owner's manual for Stanley Cups does advise customers to preheat or precool their bottle before filling it up with liquids. The manual states that to get the best performance for hot or cold retention, customers should 'Preheat or precool your vacuum bottle, mug, or food jar by filling it with warm or cold tap water. Let stand for five minutes. 'Empty the bottle and immediately fill with your favorite hot or cold beverage. Lastly, secure the stopper and lid as quickly as possible to avoid heat loss.'
