Meet man, was once richer than Mukesh Ambani, Adani, Ratan Tata, built empire worth Rs 94780000000, then lost all his money, now lives in rented home, name is... Vijaypat Singhania was once wealthier than Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and even Ratan Tata. He built an empire and lived a life of power and prestige but today, at 86, he lives alone in a rented apartment, with no fortune left to his name. Vijaypat took charge of the Raymond Group in 1980 and transformed it into a fashion giant. Under his leadership, Raymond grew from small tailoring shops into a global brand, becoming one of India's most trusted names in men's clothing. The company now has a market cap of Rs 9478 crore. Born into the wealthy Singhania family, Vijaypat did not just rely on his inheritance, he worked tirelessly to grow the business, earning respect at home and abroad. Known for his discipline, humility, and sharp business mind, he became a respected figure in both industry and public life. He tried to divide his assets between his two sons, Madhupati and Gautam. Madhupati chose to settle in Singapore, away from the business. In 2015, Vijaypat handed over his 37 per cent stake in Raymond to his younger son, Gautam Singhania. What followed was unexpected. His relationship with Gautam broke down, leading to bitter legal disputes. In a turn of events, Vijaypat was forced to leave the family home and was cut off from the empire he had built. In 2017, Vijaypat claimed that Raymond Ltd didn't give him a duplex in the family-owned JK House in Mumbai. The relationship between the father-son further soured and in 2018, the senior Singhania was also removed as Raymond's chairman emeritus. Now, the man who once led a billion-dollar company lives a simple and quiet life in a small rented flat. Outside of business, Vijaypat is a decorated aviator, inspired by J.R.D. Tata. He has received the Padma Bhushan (2006), served as Sheriff of Mumbai, won the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, and holds the title of Honorary Air Commodore in the Indian Air Force. Though he lost his wealth, Vijaypat's achievements and values remain. He built a global brand, inspired many, and faced his downfall with dignity.
