Olympic Hockey bronze medalist Dr Vece Paes dies at 80
Confirming his death, Hockey India issued a statement, saying, 'Hockey India on Thursday mourned the sad demise of Dr Vece Paes, the charismatic midfielder from the golden era of Indian Hockey. He was part of the Olympic Bronze medal winning team in 1972 Munich Olympics.'
The statement further added, 'An unshakable pillar of Indian sports, the 80-year-old Dr Paes leaves behind a legacy of achievement both in and out of competition, motivating countless athletes and sports admirers.'
Hockey India president Dr Dilip Tirkey paid his tributes. 'It is a sad day for us in Hockey India. The passing of Dr Paes draws curtains on a great era of hockey. The Olympic medal in Munich is a testament to their grit and determination. I had the good fortune of meeting him a few times and I have always been inspired by his passion for sports in general. He was a great advocate of inculcating sporting culture in the country. We at Hockey India express our deepest condolences to his wife Jennifer, son Leander and their whole family. We stand together in their grief.'
Quoting Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, the statement said, 'On behalf of Hockey India, we extend our deepest condolences to Leander, his mother and their family. His achievements in sports and sports science will always be remembered and his legacy will live on forever.'
Born in Goa in April, 1945, Dr Paes was exceptional in both sports and academics. Beyond his athletic achievements, he was also a doctor of sports medicine and served as president of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club. His son, Leander Paes, often spoke of his father's influence and inspiration in shaping his own sporting career, particularly his passion for representing India at the Olympics.
In addition to hockey, he showed his skills by playing divisional cricket, football, and rugby. His love for rugby led him to become the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.

Fine half-centuries from Yastika Bhatia, Radha Yadav and Tanuja Kanwar propelled India A to a thrilling series-clinching two-wicket victory over Australia A after Alyssa Healy's brilliant knock had set the bar high for the visitors in the second women's one-dayer, here on Friday (August 15, 2025). Following the win, achieved with just one ball to spare, India has taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match series of the multi-format tour. India A had lost the three-match T20 series 0-3. Chasing a healthy 265 for 9, built largely on Australian skipper Healy's 87-ball 91, India were in doldrums at 193 for 7 after losing Yastika (66 off 71 balls) and Radha (60 off 78 balls). But spin-bowling all-rounder Tanuja rose to occasion by batting responsibly for her 50 (57 balls) to fashion a fight back as India A won on the second-last ball of the match. Left-arm spinner Tanuja forged a 68-run stand for the eighth wicket with Prema Rawat (32 not out), who has been brilliant with the ball in the series, as the duo took it upon themselves to thwart the home team's challenge. The pair subdued their attacking instinct and focused on the huge task on hand. They relied on quick running between the wickets, and gradually their partnership blossomed into a match-winning stand. Tanuja was unlucky to be dismissed with the target in sight. But Prema and pacer Titas Sadhu weathered the Australia A challenge in the final over to score the five precious runs for victory. India A had won the opening one-dayer at the same venue by three wickets on Wednesday. It was wicketkeeper-batter Yastika who displayed the intent to fight early on after she saw opening partner Shafali Verma (4) and Dhara Gujjar (0) head back to the dressing room in quick succession. It has been an underwhelming tour for Shafali, who hasn't scored a half-century so far in the ongoing series. While thing did not look too good at 83/4, she continued to plod, finally departing in the 29th over and leaving India A in a much better situation at 151/5. Skipper Radha Yadav, who shared a 68-run stand for the fifth wicket with Yastika, continued the good work before she too departed in the 39th over, leaving India at 193/7 with quite a bit of distance to be covered. But Tanuja and Prema's resolution finally got India A over the line. Earlier, Healy's 91, studded with eight boundaries and three maximums, helped the hosts reach a healthy 265/9. Healy, for whom the series is crucial as she would be leading Australia's campaign in the upcoming Women's Cricket World Cup in the Indian sub-continent, seems to be shaping up well for the global event as she laid the foundation for a competitive total, though she missed a century. Her 58-run stand for the second wicket with Rachel Trenaman (24) after Australia A lost Tahlia Wilson put the hosts back on track. The veteran keeper-batter kept up the scoring tempo despite losing partners at the other end. Healy's departure in the 30th over came as a big setback as the hosts were reduced to 155/5. Bhatia lags behind at 46th, MacIntyre surges ahead with 62 in BMW golf
Owings Mills (US), Aug 15 (PTI) Indian-American golfer Akshay Bhatia, who is looking to make the Tour Championship for the second straight year, struggled to 5-over 75 and was placed tied-46th among the 49 starters at the BMW Championship, the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs here. Bhatia struggled to find rhythm as he started on the front nine and dropped a shot on the fifth and then a double bogey on the sixth. A birdie on the ninth reduced the damage but he dropped shots on 12th, 14th and 16th holes that saw him finish at 75. Bhatia, who entered the week sitting on the edge of the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, needs to move up the leaderboard and secure his place at East Lake for the Tour Championship. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre was in great form a the Caves Valley Golf Club as he finished with a spectacular closing stretch, carding an 8-under 62 to seize a three-shot lead after the first round. MacIntyre's day began on the front nine with a birdie on the first and a bogey on the second. He also birdied the fourth and the seventh and ended the front nine at 2-under. He gave away back-to-back bogeys on the ninth and the 10th. Then he made another move on the last four holes which had three birdies. There was a storm interruption and it proved advantageous for many, including Scheffler. Viktor Hovland, Ben Griffin and Rickie Fowler were another shot behind at 67. Other notable names in the field include Rory McIlroy (70) and defending champion Patrick Cantlay, who shot 72. The BMW Championship is limited to the top-50 in the FedEx Cup standings. Every shot counts as players chase not just the USD 20 million purse but a coveted berth in the season finale. Liverpool confirms deal close for Parma defender Leoni
London, Aug 14 (UNI) Liverpool head coach Arne Slot today revealed the club has agreed a fee to sign Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. Reports in the British press suggest that Liverpool has agreed to pay around 30 million U.S. dollars for the 18-year-old who has made 17 league appearances for the Italian club, and Slot was happy to confirm the deal was very close. "The clubs have agreed a deal, but he hasn't signed for us yet. The moment he signs for us, I can go into more details," said Slot in his Thursday press conference. The coach was also asked about interest in England international defender Marc Guehi, whose Crystal Palace side beat Liverpool on penalties in Sunday's Community Shield. "Guehi is not our player.
