Chess Great Hails Prime Minister Narendra Modi After D Gukesh's Win Over Magnus Carlsen: "Leaders Who..."

NDTVa day ago

Legendary chess player Susan Polgar has recalled the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to her on the eve of Republic Day in 2022 for playing an important role in the formative years of young Indian chess players. PM Modi recently congratulated world champion D Gukesh for his first-ever classical chess victory against world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 of Norway Chess 2025. The Hungarian great has also praised the Prime Minister for his interest in chess and supporting his country's players.
"A few years ago, I received this from Prime Minister Modi for my work with Indian students and support for Indian players. His office contacted me directly for my address so they can express his letter. I did not ask for it but appreciated his gesture. It is nice that he (even through his assistants) supports and encourages Indian chess players and athletes in other sports," she posted on X with a copy of a letter she had received from PM Modi in 2022.

In her previous post, Susan reposted PM Modi's post congratulating Gukesh on his win over world No. 1 Carlsen and asked if any other country's leader posts about their chess players, while mentioning Argentine President Javier Milei as the only other person she knows.
"Are there leaders of nations who tweet about their chess players? I only know of one other, Javier Milei, tweeting about Faustino Oro," Susan's post read.

Meanwhile, Susan had congratulated Gkesh for his stunning win over Cralsen, posting, "He fights and fights and fights no matter how bad the positions are. This was also the strength of Carlsen for years. Mark of champions!"
Following his win over Carlsen, Gukesh scored his first-ever classical win over compatriot Arjun Erigaisi — and did so from a position that seemed all but lost — in a dramatic round seven encounter at the Norway Chess tournament on Monday.
Later, in the eighth round, Hikaru Nakamura halted Gukesh's surge by beating the world champion in the classical format, breaking a five-game winless streak and throwing the leaderboard wide open.
With this win, Nakamura joined Gukesh at 11.5 points, putting both players in a tie for third place as the tournament approaches its climax. For Gukesh, the loss is a minor setback in what has otherwise been a breakout tournament.

Hungary bans LGBTQ symbols on government buildings

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban prohibited the display of symbols 'referring to or promoting' sexual minorities on government buildings, hours before the 30th Budapest Pride festival formally opens on Friday (June 6, 2025). The nationalist leader has been rolling back LGBTQ rights in the name of 'child protection' for years and this year his governing coalition adopted legal changes aimed at barring the annual Pride march. The parade is the culmination of the weeks-long Budapest Pride Festival, and this year it is scheduled to take place on June 28, despite the ban threat. A fresh decree signed by Orban and published in the government's gazette late Thursday (June 5, 2025) said that 'symbols referring to or promoting different sexual and gender orientations or the political movements representing them may not be placed on buildings' connected to the government or the central bank. The Prime Minister's office stressed it is a 'symbolic' decision, because displaying such symbols was 'not common practice on government buildings'. 'The government decree primarily confirms that the government is fully committed to curbing LGBTQ propaganda aimed at children, whether in kindergartens, schools, the media or public spaces,' it said in a statement. Municipal buildings are not affected by the decree. Budapest City Hall has flown the rainbow flag during each year's Pride festival since liberal mayor Gergely Karácsony was elected in 2019. Pride organisers are still intent on holding this year's parade, despite the legal uncertainty surrounding the event. On Thursday (June 5, 2025), an advocate general to the European Court of Justice recommended that Hungary be declared in breach of EU law over an anti-LGBTQ law adopted in 2021. The legislation prohibits the 'display or promotion of homosexuality' to under-18s, also serving as the basis for this year's fresh legal changes aiming to ban the Pride march. On Friday (June 6, 2025), Orban blasted the advocate general's recommendation as 'shameful'. 'It seems that the freedom to spread sexual propaganda is more important to the Brusselians than protecting children's rights. This is madness!' the nationalist leader said on the X social media platform.

India's next goal is to be among world's top defence exporters, says PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (June 6, 202%) said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), and pledged to make India one of world's top defence exporters. 'Today, the world is recognising India's defence ecosystem,' Mr. Modi said in his speech at Udhampur's Katra. Mr. Modi said India had emerged as a leading defence exporter over the past decade, and 'the next goal is to position India among the world's top defence exporters'. 'The faster India moves towards this objective, the more employment opportunities will be generated nationwide, benefiting millions,' he said. 'Choose products made in India' The Prime Minister said that just as the nation honoured its armed forces on the borders, it must also uphold the pride of 'Made in India' in the market, ensuring that India's strength is reflected in both defence and commerce. He said the recent military success was due to the armed forces' trust in 'Make in India'. 'Every Indian must now emulate their commitment. The Mission Manufacturing initiative, announced in this year's budget, was aimed at accelerating India's manufacturing sector,' he said. He called upon young innovators and entrepreneurs in Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission. 'India needs their modern thinking, innovation, ideas, and skills to elevate national security and economic growth,' he added. Calling upon every Indian to make a commitment to prioritise products made in India, Mr. Modi said that these goods are a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of fellow citizens. 'Choosing Indian-made products is the real service to the nation, strengthening the economy and empowering workers,' he added.

'I'll tell you why not': Shashi Tharoor snubs Trump's mediation claim over ceasefire

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the Indian diplomatic outreach programme in the Americas, dismissed the idea of any mediation between India and Pakistan, stating that there "can be no negotiation with unequals." Tharoor, while responding to a question during a conversation at the Council on Foreign Relations, said that negotiations 'cannot happen, especially when one side consists of terrorists and the other their victims.' "Mediation is not a term that we are particularly willing to entertain. I'll tell you why not. The fact is that this implies, even when you say things like a broker or whatever, you're implying an equivalence which simply doesn't exist," Tharoor said, as quoted by news agency PTI. Also Read | In US, Shashi Tharoor's son grills him on Pakistan role in Pahalgam terror attack. Congress MP gives 'three reasons' He said there is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. "There is no equivalence between a country that provides a safe haven to terrorism, and a country that's a flourishing multi-party democracy that's trying to get on with its business," Tharoor added. Also Read | Shashi Tharoor's fresh 'don't test India's patience' warning to Pakistan over terror attacks The Congress leader's remark came amid repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that he "helped settle" the tensions between India and Pakistan. Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a 'full and immediate' ceasefire after a 'long night' of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over a dozen times that he 'helped settle' the tensions between India and Pakistan. Details here Trump also claimed that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America would do a 'lot of trade' with them if they stopped the conflict. However, the Indian government has already rejected Trump's claim of mediation between India and Pakistan to stop military actions from both sides. About two weeks after the horrific April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.
