Mobile, electronics manufacturers to self-declare Repairability Index: Govt
New Delhi: The government on Saturday said that the committee constituted for the Framework on
Repairability Index
(RI) in mobile and electronic sector has submitted its report, to help consumers who witness issues while seeking repair for their devices.

. The committee's recommendations have been framed in alignment with the best global practices without causing any impediment to the industry with regard to innovation and ease of doing business.
The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are required to self-declare the Repairability Index based on a standards scoring criteria provided in the framework with no additional compliance burden, said Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
Further, the committee recommended that the Repairability Index should be displayed at the point of sale/purchase, E-commerce platforms and in form of QR code on packaged products to enable consumer to make informed choices.
In September 2024, the Department of Consumer Affairs constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary for developing the framework of the Repairability Index (RI).
Repairability Index aims to create an ecosystem where consumers choose options that align with the ethos of 'mindful utilisation' of their products over 'wasteful consumption'.
By empowering consumers with ease and hassle-free repair options, the Department said it is reaffirming its commitment to a self-reliant, sustainable, and consumer-friendly economy.
An analysis of grievances received at National Consumer Helpline (NCH) indicates that there has been significant rise in complaints in mobiles and tablets product category from 19,057 in 2022-2023 followed by 21,020 in 2023-2024 and further to 22,864 in 2024-2025, which also highlighted a pressing need to improve repair accessibility and ensure greater transparency of repair and post-sale service-related information to consumers.
Based on the deliberations, the committee identified smartphones and tablets as a product category for notification in the initial phase of Repairability Index in Mobile and Electronics Sector.
The committee actively engaged with a wide array of relevant stakeholders, including manufacturers, industry associations, consumer advocacy groups, and representatives of government.
"As India continues its rapid technological advancement and more and more consumers have access to a variety of consumer products, the need for robust after sales support and equitable repair practices is becoming increasingly crucial. For countless consumers, both in rural and urban areas, access to affordable repair options is fundamental," said the ministry.

AP showcases investment potential in electronics manufacturing
Tirupati: Andhra Pradesh is fast emerging as a prime destination for investments and industrial growth, especially in the electronics manufacturing sector. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) and Andhra Pradesh Electronics Component Manufacturing Policy draft workshop in Tirupati held on Thursday was aimed at giving a further boost to this sector. He emphasised the abundant opportunities in the state for setting up industries and expressed confidence that Andhra Pradesh is crafting a more competitive and investor-friendly electronics policy compared to the Central Government's framework. Bhaskar revealed that the state is aiming to localise production of electronic components, which are currently being imported, and is formulating a forward-looking policy to attract manufacturers. Plans are already underway to establish 25 percent of these units in the southern Rayalaseema region. Tirupati EMC-2 cluster and the Kopparthy EMC are being positioned as key hubs for this expansion. Highlighting the state's industrial readiness, he mentioned Sri City, where more than 200 industries are operational and contributing to significant employment. Andhra Pradesh boasts superior infrastructure with robust road, rail, airport, and port connectivity. Reaffirming the state's commitment to transparency and technological governance, he said Andhra Pradesh is leveraging AI, IoT, drones, and WhatsApp governance for effective administration. As the state works toward its Vision 2047 goal of becoming a $2.4 trillion economy, it aims to harness not just IT but a range of industrial sectors to meet national targets.

High-range belt of Kottayam taps into big investments with ‘Rising Poonjar 2K25'
Spanning the Wagamon hills in the north to the forests of Sabarimala in the south, Poonjar, a picturesque region in the eastern high ranges of Kottayam, is opening its doors to investment and entrepreneurship. In a move to boost enterprise and economic activity in the region, the Industries department is organising an investment meet titled 'Rising Poonjar 2K25' at Erattupetta on Monday. The event, inspired by the Invest Kerala Global Summit, will be held at Barakat Square and inaugurated by Industries Minister P. Rajeeve. According to Poonjar legislator Sebastian Kulathungal, the meet will showcase a wide range of investment projects within the Poonjar constituency and nearby regions. So far, 206 entrepreneurs have registered, with investment proposals totaling ₹2,042 crore. The projects are expected to generate employment for 7,381 people. Potential areas 'The constituency holds immense potential across sectors such as tourism, agro-based and value-added food products, IT/ITES, rubber-based industries, wood products, and spice-based enterprises. With the proposed Sabarimala Greenfield International Airport in Erumely set to boost regional connectivity, this meet aims to catalyse industrial and commercial growth. The goal is to enhance local production, create jobs, and improve household incomes,' Mr. Kulathungal said. The event also aims to streamline the process of setting up businesses by ensuring necessary permissions, technical assistance, and access to capital through financial institutions, government agencies and local self-governments. Maharashtra uses tax data to check fake claims in Ladki Bahin scheme
Maharashtra has tightened the verification process for Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana, a welfare scheme offering Rs 1,500 per month to eligible women, after concerns about fake beneficiaries and fraud. The Income-Tax Department will share data with the Maharashtra Women and Child Development (WCD) Department, following a government notification issued on June 3 by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Income Tax data to be shared with the state According to the Union Finance Ministry notification, the Secretary of Maharashtra's WCD Department has been authorised to receive Income Tax data under Section 138 of the Income-tax Act, 1961. The goal is to help identify and cross-check beneficiaries under the Ladki Bahin Yojana. This marks a rare instance of central-state data sharing in a welfare program, aimed at ensuring that only truly eligible women receive the financial benefit. Why Government is cracking down? Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar recently acknowledged that the initial rollout of the Ladki Bahin Yojana lacked proper eligibility checks. Speaking on June 2, he said, "It was a mistake on our part to give benefits to all women without sufficient verification. At the time, we were short on time as elections were approaching in 2–3 months." The scheme, which was launched in August 2024, was meant to empower economically weaker women, but audits later found that thousands of ineligible beneficiaries had enrolled, including 2,289 government employees.
