Mobile, electronics manufacturers to self-declare Repairability Index: Govt
Repairability Index
(RI) in mobile and electronic sector has submitted its report, to help consumers who witness issues while seeking repair for their devices.

. The committee's recommendations have been framed in alignment with the best global practices without causing any impediment to the industry with regard to innovation and ease of doing business.
The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are required to self-declare the Repairability Index based on a standards scoring criteria provided in the framework with no additional compliance burden, said Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
Further, the committee recommended that the Repairability Index should be displayed at the point of sale/purchase, E-commerce platforms and in form of QR code on packaged products to enable consumer to make informed choices.
In September 2024, the Department of Consumer Affairs constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary for developing the framework of the Repairability Index (RI).
Repairability Index aims to create an ecosystem where consumers choose options that align with the ethos of 'mindful utilisation' of their products over 'wasteful consumption'.
By empowering consumers with ease and hassle-free repair options, the Department said it is reaffirming its commitment to a self-reliant, sustainable, and consumer-friendly economy.
An analysis of grievances received at National Consumer Helpline (NCH) indicates that there has been significant rise in complaints in mobiles and tablets product category from 19,057 in 2022-2023 followed by 21,020 in 2023-2024 and further to 22,864 in 2024-2025, which also highlighted a pressing need to improve repair accessibility and ensure greater transparency of repair and post-sale service-related information to consumers.
Based on the deliberations, the committee identified smartphones and tablets as a product category for notification in the initial phase of Repairability Index in Mobile and Electronics Sector.
The committee actively engaged with a wide array of relevant stakeholders, including manufacturers, industry associations, consumer advocacy groups, and representatives of government.
"As India continues its rapid technological advancement and more and more consumers have access to a variety of consumer products, the need for robust after sales support and equitable repair practices is becoming increasingly crucial. For countless consumers, both in rural and urban areas, access to affordable repair options is fundamental," said the ministry.

Telangana to build over 5,000 km of HAM roads to ramp up connectivity
Hyderabad: As part of its vision to provide better road facilities across the state, the Telangana government is set to construct 5,190 km of roads under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The project, which will be carried out in 17 packages, aims to connect every village to its mandal centre, every mandal to its district centre, and every district to the state capital. In the first phase, the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department will take up 17 packages covering 5,190 km at a cost of Rs 6,478 crore, while the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department will handle 7,947 km in 17 packages at a cost of approximately Rs 6,000 crore. The remaining 6,810 km will be tendered by December of this year. The plan includes four-lane roads from district centres to Hyderabad, two-lane roads from mandals to district headquarters, and the upgrading of rural roads, including converting mud roads into bitumen-surfaced ones, informed R&B Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. Addressing a Road Show on HAM at the National Academy of Construction (NAC) on Tuesday, the Minister said the government's vision is to link every village to its mandal headquarters, every mandal to the district headquarters, and every district to Hyderabad through modern, all-weather roads. Venkat Reddy explained that the HAM combines the strengths of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) models, with the government funding 40 per cent of the project cost in ten instalments. Contractors will invest the remaining 60 per cent, which will be repaid based on performance with inflation-linked adjustments. The model ensures low risk for investors, a steady income, and 15 years of assured maintenance, resulting in durable, pothole-free, and safer roads. He stressed that quality roads are the backbone of economic growth and said Telangana's development plan places equal emphasis on welfare and infrastructure. The Minister assured contractors and financial institutions of transparency, timely payments, and clear policy support, adding that a web-based 'TG Roads Inventory' application has been developed for real-time project monitoring. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka, along with Road Development Corporation Chairman Malreddy Ram Reddy, attended the event as chief guests.

Panel urges 'Make in India' push to protect leather products, boost exports
A parliamentary standing committee on commerce has recommended that the government take proactive measures to promote the 'Make in India' brand for traditional Indian leather products to help them achieve global recognition and prevent their imitation by international brands, as in the recent case of Kolhapuri chappals. 'The Committee recommends that the Department take proactive measures to promote the 'Make in India' brand for traditional Indian leather products. This will help gain global recognition for these products, safeguard the rights of local artisans, and prevent their imitation or misuse by international brands as was reported in the case of Kolhapuri chappals,' it said. Italian luxury fashion label Prada's Spring/Summer 2026 collection featured models wearing footwear resembling Kolhapuri chappals during Milan Fashion Week in June. It did not credit India as the source of inspiration. However, in July, a team from the luxury brand visited Maharashtra's Kolhapur to understand the craft of making Kolhapuri footwear. The committee also recommended that the 'Focus Product Scheme for Footwear and Leather Sectors', announced in the Union Budget, be finalised and implemented at the earliest with 'unambiguous and practical guidelines'. 'The scheme should take a complete view of the sector by supporting all parts of the value chain, including components, design and machinery for both leather and non-leather footwear. To make the scheme more effective, the Department should set up regular reviews, encourage better coordination between agencies and applicants, and create a support system to address challenges faced during implementation,' the report said. India's leather industry is highly labour intensive, generating employment for over 4.42 million people, with 40 per cent of them being women. The committee also suggested leveraging existing free trade agreements (FTAs) with Japan, Australia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to increase exports of leather and leather products, while prioritising new trade agreements with key markets such as the European Union (EU). The Export Promotion Mission (EPM) announced in the Union Budget earlier this year can play a pivotal role in undertaking large-scale export promotion activities in major markets and exploring potential markets, the report said.
