Australia Star's Big Claim: 'Baby AB' Tag Was A Burden To Dewald Brevis
Last Updated: Glenn Maxwell believes the 'Baby AB' nickname was a heavy burden on Dewald Brevis. Australia superstar Glenn Maxwell believes that the 'Baby AB' nickname was a 'heavy' burden on South Africa's young batting sensation, Dewald Brevis, and that he has done well to recover from the early setbacks to become a regular in the Proteas side. Maxwell was speaking after Australia's 2-1 T20I series win over South Africa. Brevis ended it as the top run-scorer with 180 runs at a strike rate of 204.55. With a century in the second T20I and a blazing fifty in the third, he made headlines and seemed to have turned a corner in his career. It was unlike when he first broke through in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where his bat swing and mannerisms made people quickly relate him to South African legend AB de Villiers. Brevis got into the South African T20I side in 2023 but struggled for consistency, both internationally and in franchise leagues. 'It's a pretty heavy burden he had to have early in his career," Maxwell said. 'He probably got fast-tracked a little bit into the South African side. He's gone away, worked on his game, and he's come back playing beautifully. His bat swing is really pure—he's hard to stop when he gets going." After the century in the second T20I, Brevis had spoken about how he brought his career back on track with some time away with family and clearing his head in December 2024. Interestingly, he also mentioned that he wanted to stay true to the 'Original Dewald'. Brevis' fifty in the third match went in vain because Maxwell scored a brilliant 62 off 36 to help Australia chase 173 in the last over. 'It was nerve-wracking when we lost a couple of wickets in a row. Corbin Bosch bowled a brilliant over. To keep the run-rate near 9 or 10, we were down to two wickets, I had to keep the majority of the strike," he said later on. 'Nice to get a couple out of the middle right at the end. I just stay calm, watch the ball, try and not preempt too much, understand the areas where I can get the boundaries and where I can get the twos. Just tried to stay on strike as much as possible," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
