SISD considering incentive payment for teachers who voluntarily leave their position
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Socorro Independent School District's (SISD) Board of Trustees will be discussing a proposal to offer a $2,500 incentive payment to 100 teachers and campus-based contract staff, who will voluntarily leave their positions at the end of the school year.
The measure will be discussed at a special board meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at the district's headquarters at 12440 Rojas Dr, El Paso, TX 79928.
If passed, this would grant teachers and select staffers the option to submit a Notice of Voluntary Separation to SISD, effective at the end of the 2024-25 contract year. The payments would be distributed to the first 100 select staffers to submit the notice.
This comes on the heels of the district approving a measure to lay off approximately 300 teachers and staff at the end of the school year, to address a projected $38 million budget shortfall that threatens to bankrupt the district.

Andrew Kim, one of two state-appointed conservators to oversee the district in the midst of their financial crisis, said two weeks ago after a board meeting that the layoffs are estimated to save SISD $30 million.
That would leave an $8 million shortfall that would still need addressing.

Veronica Hernandez, union president of the Socorro American Federation of Teachers, said that if passed the measure would be a welcome relief for teachers, but that it wouldn't do much to improve their situation.
'The morale, it's just really low right now, extremely low. So yeah, this is a little bit of help, but I mean, that's nothing for 100 people. What about the other 200-300 that (SISD) is going to let go? By the time unemployment kicks in, you're already going to be late on several bills,' Hernandez said.

City of Socorro to launch microtransit service next month
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of Socorro will launch its own on-demand microtransit service next month, the City announced in a news release. This comes after the El Paso Transit Authority (ETA) announced that its buses will no longer stop in Socorro, starting July 1. Community meeting highlights end of transit service in Socorro The City of Socorro partnered with The Goodman Corporation to develop a Transit Development Plan (TDP) that focuses on providing transit services in better alignment with the community's needs, according to the news release. The City said the planning process — Socorro ¡Avanzando! — included assessing current transit services and identifying traffic needs and improvement options. The City also engaged people riding ETA's bus routes, community members, families, and stakeholders. The TDP's central recommendation is for the City to launch its own on-demand microtransit service by July 1, with the following features, according to the news release: Operated directly by the City using an existing vehicle fleet and TripMaster software. Service hours: Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. — excluding major holidays. Zero-fare service — initially, until demand requires adjustment. Same-day trips, with limited advance reservations. Target wait time: less than 30 minutes for 100 percent of riders. Ability to adapt service as demand and resources evolve. 'Microtransit will offer residents a more accessible, flexible, and responsive transit option compared to the infrequent and hard-to-access fixed-route bus services by ETA,' read the news release. The City said the Socorro ¡Avanzando! TDP is the 'City's independent study of transit's potential in Socorro as a matter of due diligence, to understand how best to improve transit and efficiently utilize limited public resources – to boldly envision 'What could, and should transit be in Socorro?'' In addition, the plan is grounded in the City's recent 2040 Comprehensive Plan process, according to the news release. 'Socorro is a welcoming community that celebrates diversity, preserves its rich culture and history, and fosters economic growth, environmental stewardship, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike. It stands as a symbol of unity and prosperity for future generations,' read the news release. ETA operates the regional bus system serving communities throughout the greater El Paso area. El Paso County approves delivery method for construction of new Office of Medical Examiner
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County Commissioners Court approved the use of a construction manager at risk (CMAR) for the construction of a new Office of the Medical Examiner on Monday, June 2. According to the news release by the County, the CMAR approach will 'allow the County to hire a construction firm early in the process to collaborate closely with the design team.' In addition, the CMAR method is 'designed to improve project coordination, manage costs, save time and deliver the best value for El Paso County,' the County said. As we've previously reported, the new Office of the Medical Examiner is one of three major projects that El Paso County voters approved in 2024 as part of the Capital Improvement Program.
