Hundreds march to Downing Street urging release of Israeli hostages

Hundreds of people including family members of Israeli hostages taken on October 7 have marched to Downing Street urging the release of those being held by Hamas. There were several flare-ups from counter protesters including one arrest as the 'national march for the hostages', organised by Stop the Hate UK and a number of Jewish organisations, made its way through central London on Sunday. It comes after Sir Keir Starmer pledged to recognise a Palestinian state in September unless the Israeli government meets a series of conditions towards ending the conflict in Gaza. Stop the Hate said that protesters will urge the Prime Minister to prioritise the release of the 50 remaining Israeli hostages, with 20 of them thought to be alive, before any recognition of a Palestinian state. Among those due to attend and give a speech is Noga Guttman, the cousin of 24-year-old Evyatar David, who was kidnapped. Hamas released a video last weekend which showed Mr David looking skeletal and hollow-eyed in a dimly lit Gaza tunnel. Some protesters held Israeli flags and wore yellow ribbons as they congregated in Lincoln's Inn Fields in Holborn from 1.30pm. A scuffle broke out after at least two men shouted 'Free Palestine' in front of the march close to Trafalgar Square. One man was seen being bundled to the ground after being surrounded by about a dozen people, while another man was seen being moved away by police officers after he began shouting. Earlier, on The Strand, a young man was kept away from the protesters after shouting 'Free Palestine'. Another man was carried away by officers after a scuffle broke out close to the gates of Downing Street. He was seen throwing water over a pro-Israel demonstrator before charging at him and putting his hand around the demonstrator's neck, before officers intervened. The Metropolitan Police said officers were deployed along the route 'to ensure the safety of those attending and to deal with any offences.' It comes after Foreign Secretary David Lammy joined his counterparts from Australia, Italy, Germany and New Zealand to condemn Israeli plans to take over Gaza City. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said, on Friday, that Israel would seek 'the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip', as well as 'Israeli security control in the Gaza Strip' and 'the establishment of an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority'. In their joint statement, the foreign ministers said the plans 'risk violating international law' and 'any attempts at annexation or of settlement extension violate international law'. Sir Keir described Israel's plans as 'wrong' and called for 'a ceasefire, a surge in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas and a negotiated solution'. He said the UK will recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to meet certain conditions, including addressing the humanitarian crisis, implementing a ceasefire and reviving the prospect of a two-state solution. But he insisted the move was not a propaganda boost to Hamas, saying the 'terrorist organisation' could play 'no part in any future government'.

Moses Itauma: Ben Davison's planning helped me fall back in love with boxing

British heavyweight boxing sensational Moses Itauma has revealed meticulous research by trainer Ben Davison helped set him on the path to fall back in love with the sport. Itauma, 20, is widely regarded as the most exciting prospect in the blue-riband division and faces his toughest test to date on Saturday when he takes on compatriot Dillian Whyte (31-3, 21KOs) in Riyadh. It will be the 13th fight of Itauma's (12-0, 10KOs) fledgling career and only his fifth under Davison, but the Chatham southpaw recently detailed how he started to 'hate' boxing barely a year after he turned professional at the start of 2023. 'Being in the ring (sparring) with all these heavyweights Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, I know that there are levels to boxing and I just felt like I was unable to learn any more,' Itauma revealed. 'I don't want to disrespect any of the coaches I tried or did work with. I love and respect them, but with Ben, he taught me a different side to boxing. 'He taught me there is more to boxing than punch, punch, get punched, punch back, punch, punch, punch. There is actually a whole chess game to this.' Itauma split from old trainer Alan Smith in March, 2024 after a first-round knockout victory over Dan Garber in his eighth professional bout and eventually decided to join Davison's stacked Essex stable after trials elsewhere. Davison, who has worked with Fury and more recently Anthony Joshua, is now a key figure in the team of a boxer widely tipped as a soon-to-be world heavyweight champion, but the Slovakian-born fighter may have considered his future in the sport if he had not listened to older brother Karol Itauma (13-1, 8KOs). 'What I mean with falling out of love with boxing is, it was kind of like I felt like I reached a barrier and I was unable to break it,' Itauma added. 'That is why I went around searching for a new trainer to get something new. 'I tried out a lot of coaches and Ben Davison was actually the last one I tried. If I'll be honest, when I went to Ben, I was like he has too many stars in the gym, he won't really have time for me, he won't give me time I need but my brother was like there is no harm in trying Ben Davison. 'And I went there and as I walked through the doors, there is a glass window on the door where you can see inside the gym and Ben has got all my fights up. 'He is writing in his notepad and he was like, 'you do this, I don't know if you're aware of it, now we need to make you aware of this and do this, this and this,' and I was like, 'rah, none of the other coaches did that,'. 'And it was only when I started sparring, he would say, 'if I do this, he will do this and you can capitalise,' and I would go and do it, it would pay off and I'd be like what! 'Obviously we just clicked from there but the most impressive thing is how you have so many stars in the gym but each individual fighter gets the necessary time.'

Man Utd urged to pull the plug on £40m transfer despite giving green light

Manchester United are expected to focus on outgoings after completing a deal for Benjamin Sesko but they have been warned against letting Rasmus Hojlund leave them Manchester United have been warned that it would be a mistake to offload Rasmus Hojlund amid talk that the Dane is free to leave Old Trafford following the signing of Benjamin Sesko. ‌ The Red Devils struggled badly in front of goal last season and have spent big on bolstering their attack during the summer transfer window, clinching deals for Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Sesko, who completed his £73.7million switch from RB Leipzig over the weekend. ‌ Sesko, 22, is expected to spearhead United's attack after both Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to score goals on a regular basis last term. ‌ Hojlund has subsequently been told that he is free to explore a move away from United in order to ensure he plays regularly in the new campaign with AC Milan keen. But Mikael Silvestre, who represented the Red Devils between 1999 and 2008, says that his former club should not be letting Hojlund go under any circumstances amid suggestions Milan would meet United's £40m valuation of the forward with a £6m loan fee plus an option to buy permanently next summer. " Marcus Rashford has gone and there are not a lot of strikers around, Joshua Zirkzee is a different type of striker that doesn't make those runs in behind the defence," the former central defender told Hajper, via The Metro. ‌ "He is another type of player for certain games, certain opposition. But no, you need competition, need quality, so I wouldn't rush into sending Rasmus Hojlund out on loan if Sesko signs. Absolutely not." Hojlund scored 10 times in all competitions last term for United with just four coming in the Premier League. Sesko, on the other hand, plundered 21 goals for Lepizig and has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League since the end of last season. ‌ Arsenal are long-term admirers of the Slovenia international but chose to pursue a deal for Viktor Gyokeres. That opened the door for United and Silvestre reckons Sesko is the right profile of striker for Ruben Amorim's preferred 3-4-3 system. "Benjamin Sesko is an upcoming talent and he's got certain qualities that could fit into Ruben Amorim's style of play," the Frenchman added. "He's got presence, height, he's good with his back against the defenders. He's got the athleticism to respond to the physicality of the Premier League. He's ticking a lot of boxes for sure."
