Grammy-winning 70s rock guitarist Rick Derringer dies aged 77
Classic rock guitarist, singer, and producer Rick Derringer has died at the age of 77.
Tony Wilson, a long-time friend of Derringer's, shared the news on Facebook, saying Wilson and Derringer's wife, Jenda, were at the rock star's side at the time of his death.
Wilson did not share a cause of death, but wrote: 'Derringer's legacy extends beyond his music, entertaining fans with his signature energy and talent.
'His passing leaves a void in the music world, and he will be deeply missed by fans, colleagues, and loved ones.'
Born Richard Zehringer on August 5, 1947, in Fort Recovery, Ohio, Derringer rose to fame as a teenager in the 1960s with the band The McCoys, whose debut single Hang On Sloopy topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965, knocking The Rolling Stones' Satisfaction from the number one spot.
The track's infectious energy marked the arrival of a prodigious young talent, and the musician went on to leave a major mark on rock music.
He collaborated extensively with legends such as Johnny and Edgar Winter, Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, and 'Weird Al' Yankovic.
His guitar work on tracks like Frankenstein and Free Ride helped define the sound of 1970s rock.
In 1973, he released the solo album All American Boy, featuring the hit Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo, which remains a classic. More Trending
A versatile musician and producer, Derringer also made a name for himself behind the scenes, working on a wide range of albums across genres.
He earned a Grammy Award for his production work with 'Weird Al' Yankovic and lent his talent to albums by Barbra Streisand, Todd Rundgren, and others.
In the 1980s and beyond, he explored Christian rock and continued to tour and record prolifically.
He is survived by his wife, Jenda, and their children.

Romeo Beckham looks glum at French Open after splitting from girlfriend
Romeo Beckham was snapped looking rather blue at the French Open, days after his split from his girlfriend was revealed. Romeo, 22, was one of the celebrities in attendance a the semi-final match between Italy's Lorenzo Musetti and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, in Paris. Dressed in a navy suit and black t-shirt, the Romeo was dressed in dark colours with simple jewellery. The second eldest of the Beckham children looked blank and somewhat downcast in some of the images taken at the game. This appearance took place just days after it was announced that he and his girlfriend, Kim Turnball, had split after seven months together Friends said things 'fizzled out' between Romeo, 22, and Kim, 26, in what's been an 'amicable' split that has 'nothing to do' with the Beckham rift after her name was drawn into the drama. A friend of the pair told the Mail: 'Romeo and Kim are both young and they had a lovely time together but at that age things don't always last forever and they decided to split up. 'They have been friendly since and have even been at the same venues. It's a huge shame, particularly as David and Victoria really adored her and thought she made Romeo happy but it wasn't to be. 'It happened a couple of weeks ago and relations have remained friendly between them.' Alison Hammond shuts down bizarre pregnancy claim in best way possible
Alison Hammond has shut down speculation that she's pregnant in the most hilarious way possible after false rumours spread online. The Great British Bake-Off and This Morning host, 50, has reportedly been the subject of false AI-generated stories that are claiming she's with child. Alison has one child – her son Aidan who was born in 2005 – but she appears to be determined not to have any more if her latest comments are anything to go by. Naturally, Alison has responded to the pregnancy rumours with good spirit and humour, taking to social media to deny them in the best way possible. Posting to her Instagram account, which has 1.7 million followers, she said: 'Lots of AI stories online about me being pregnant, I can confirm I am not having a baby.' She continued: '[I'm definitely not pregnant] as I'm not sure my 50-year-old womb could take it. However, I do think we should all dance like Meghan.'
