Airline crew arrested for gold smuggling at Mumbai airport

Time of Indiaa day ago

Mumbai: An airline crew member was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) along with a jeweller from Dadar for smuggling 1,373 grams of gold worth Rs 1.41 crore from the USA.
Acting on specific intelligence, the officials of the DRI Mumbai unit intercepted Girish Pimple after he arrived from New York at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai on Thursday.
His personal and baggage search did not yield any results; however, the officials found him hiding a packet near the side of a sofa placed near the baggage services area. Upon opening the packet, the officials found six pieces of yellow metal weighing 1,373 grams.
Testing by an expert confirmed that the yellow metal was a gold bar valued at Rs 1.41 crore.
Girish was placed under arrest and interrogated. He revealed that the contraband belonged to jeweller Rakesh Rathod, a resident of Dadar, who paid him 15,000 USD to buy gold from the US and promised Rs 2 lakh upon successful delivery of the gold to him. The agency stated that Rathod was previously arrested in 2020 in a similar gold smuggling case, suggesting this is his modus operandi. The agency also suspects that Girish regularly smuggled gold from abroad while on duty.

Bagru police arrest five for highway almond heist

1 2 3 Jaipur: A heist on national highway-8 when almonds worth Rs 60 lakh were looted after drugging the truck driver came to nothing as Bagru police arrested five persons and recovered the stolen almonds, police officers said Sunday. DCP (west) Amit Kumar said Tansher Singh, a partner in a logistics company, had filed a complaint at Bagru police station on June 7 stating that a truck carrying 900 sacks of almonds had gone missing. The consignment, booked by an export firm, was worth Rs 1 crore. The truck, which departed on June 4, was being tracked via two GPS devices. However, both signals were lost near Nevta Road Bridge in Sanganer on the morning of June 7. The driver, Anis, went incommunicado, and later, the truck was found abandoned near Bagru toll plaza with the driver unconscious and over 300 almond sacks missing. Three of the accused—Babulal Chaudhary, Shakir Qureshi, and Sahil Mansuri—were identified as the masterminds behind the robbery. They sold the stolen almonds to Rajkumar Saini and Bhupendra Kumar, both residents of Kalwad. Police raided a house in Kuchera, Nagaur—belonging to Saini's in-laws—and recovered 312 sacks of the stolen almonds along with the getaway vehicle, an Innova car.
