Melaka Introduces Reading Awards
MELAKA, April 23 (Bernama) -- The state government is introducing the Melaka Reading Award this year in an effort to instill a culture of knowledge through reading under the initiative to cultivate a knowledgeable and motivated community.
Melaka Public Library (Perpustam) chairman Datuk Rosli Abdullah said the award focuses on increasing the number of readings and readers as well as targeting more inclusive readers.
"The Melaka Reading Award is also an added value to support the National Reading Decade which aims to create Malaysia as a reading nation and a world-class knowledgeable nation by 2030.
"Through the award, the state government will also give recognition to the Melaka Reader Icon which aims to provide motivation in making reading or information literacy a culture that can improve the quality of life of the community," he said.
He said this when speaking at the Melaka Reading Award Launch Ceremony in conjunction with the state-level Jom Baca Bersama 10 Minutes Programme officiated by the state's Deputy Exco for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem at Bukit Baru here today.
Rosli said the Melaka Reader Icon is divided into categories of children, youth, adults, civil servants and people with disabilities (OKU) to promote reading as a lifestyle in creating a highly knowledgeable community.
He said that apart from the reader icon, the award will also recognise the best readers among individuals who make reading a lifestyle as well as using public library services throughout Melaka.
"Among other recognitions given at the awards is the best knowledge information gateway (best library) for the categories of homes, government offices, private, houses of worship, schools and higher learning institutions.
"Perpustam also created a slogan to support this campaign to encourage reading, which is 'Makin Pedas, Makin Membaca' because it is synonymous with Melaka which is famous for its delicious asam pedas, which is like asam pedas that whets the appetite while reading whets the mind," he said.

It will also be a lifeline to about 40 million people who are being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030, said the UN website. But over the years, 90 per cent of big fish populations have depleted and 50 per cent of coral reefs have been destroyed, as people continue to exploit marine resources on a large scale without replenishing them. In the region, Asean echoed a similar message, warning of multiple threats to the seas - from pollution to climate change. "Across Asean our seas support livelihoods, feed millions and hold vast natural and cultural heritage. "However, our oceans are under threat from pollution, overexploitation and climate change. Asean joins the global call to protect and sustainably manage our marine ecosystems for generations to come,' the regional grouping said in a Facebook posting today. Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Malaysia to Thailand, Bong Yik Jui, said while Aidiladha signified the values of sacrifice, devotion, and unity among Muslims worldwide, it also solemnly reflected to the duty and dedication carried out by the mission, in upholding Malaysia's interests overseas. Sultan of Kelantan donates five cows for MAIK's 'korban' programme
KOTA BARU: The Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, has graciously donated five cows for the 'korban' Jama'ie (sacrificial ritual) programme organised by the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK) in conjunction with Aidiladha. The annual programme to support the asnaf (eligible recipients) community through the distribution of sacrificial meat was held at the field of Kompleks Islam Jubli Perak Sultan Ismail Petra field in Panji, here, today. MAIK president Tengku Tan Sri Mohamad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz, who is also the Tengku Temenggong of Kelantan, said the five cows were part of a total of 49 that were slaughtered and distributed to 2,000 asnaf in the Kota Baru district. "The sacrificial meat is distributed to the poor and needy through state-administered mosques. "Each recipient will receive two kg of meat and bones. "Every year, the korban ceremony organised by MAIK is a lively and well-attended affair, supported by cattle donations from members of the royal family, government agencies and the public," he added. At the event, Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan, Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra was present to witness the slaughter of the five sacrificial cows. The Crown Prince spent about 40 minutes with more than 500 residents during the sacrificial ceremony before departing. At the same event, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud also performed the slaughter of a cow as part of the programme. – Bernama
