Online fraud in Melaka costs victims RM30.85m in five months

MELAKA: A total of 934 online scam cases with losses amounting to RM30.85 million were recorded in Melaka from January 1 to June 2 this year. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said all the cases were reported through the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) and the police. During the same period, authorities arrested 531 individuals linked to online scam syndicates, with 312 of them charged in court. 'This year's largest individual loss involved a victim who lost RM2.9 million. Alarmingly, more professionals—including doctors, bank officers and corporate managers—are falling victim to these scams, not just ordinary citizens or civil servants,' he told reporters here today. He noted that while total losses were slightly lower than the same period last year, online scams remain a serious concern and ongoing awareness efforts are crucial. The most common scams reported involved fake investments on Telegram and Facebook, bogus job offers, and non-existent house-cleaning services. 'Despite being aware of the risks, many victims were lured in due to greed and impulsive decisions,' he added. Mohd Noor Helmy was speaking after launching the Content Creator Enhancement Workshop under the Anti-Scam Awareness Campaign, which saw the participation of around 50 individuals, including MADANI community leaders. The programme, held in collaboration with the Melaka Information Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the police, also trained participants to create digital content and serve as information agents to raise public awareness of online scams.

Completion Of SMK Seri Duyong Boosts Educational Facilities In Duyong Constituency

MELAKA, May 16 (Bernama) -- The construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Duyong at an estimated cost of RM32 million is regarded as a significant boost to educational facilities for students in Duyong and the surrounding areas. Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said the new school, which was fully completed and began operations last year, was built using federal government allocations as part of efforts to improve educational facilities in Melaka. 'SMK Seri Duyong allows students to attend school closer to home, making their daily commute safer and more comfortable. 'The school can accommodate up to 900 students and currently has students from Form One to Form Three,' he told reporters after handing over tokens of appreciation to about 700 teachers from 31 schools in the Duyong state constituency, in conjunction with Teachers' Day here today. Meanwhile, he said the Free Tuition Programme organised by the Duyong State Constituency Development and Coordination Committee (JAPERUN) Office would continue for the third year to help students enhance their academic performance. Mohd Noor Helmy said the programme, held every Saturday and Sunday, was open to all but limited to 150 students, particularly those preparing for major examinations. 'We've received positive feedback from this programme, with some students achieving 8As (in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination) after consistently attending the free tuition classes every week,' he said. In the meantime, Mohd Noor Helmy said the bus service for the Duyong route was expected to resume operations due to strong demand from residents, particularly parents who had faced difficulties sending their children to school since the service was discontinued about a year ago. He said the initiative aimed to provide better transport facilities for residents in the area.

Melaka Introduces Reading Awards

MELAKA, April 23 (Bernama) -- The state government is introducing the Melaka Reading Award this year in an effort to instill a culture of knowledge through reading under the initiative to cultivate a knowledgeable and motivated community. Melaka Public Library (Perpustam) chairman Datuk Rosli Abdullah said the award focuses on increasing the number of readings and readers as well as targeting more inclusive readers. "The Melaka Reading Award is also an added value to support the National Reading Decade which aims to create Malaysia as a reading nation and a world-class knowledgeable nation by 2030. "Through the award, the state government will also give recognition to the Melaka Reader Icon which aims to provide motivation in making reading or information literacy a culture that can improve the quality of life of the community," he said. He said this when speaking at the Melaka Reading Award Launch Ceremony in conjunction with the state-level Jom Baca Bersama 10 Minutes Programme officiated by the state's Deputy Exco for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem at Bukit Baru here today. Rosli said the Melaka Reader Icon is divided into categories of children, youth, adults, civil servants and people with disabilities (OKU) to promote reading as a lifestyle in creating a highly knowledgeable community. He said that apart from the reader icon, the award will also recognise the best readers among individuals who make reading a lifestyle as well as using public library services throughout Melaka. "Among other recognitions given at the awards is the best knowledge information gateway (best library) for the categories of homes, government offices, private, houses of worship, schools and higher learning institutions. "Perpustam also created a slogan to support this campaign to encourage reading, which is 'Makin Pedas, Makin Membaca' because it is synonymous with Melaka which is famous for its delicious asam pedas, which is like asam pedas that whets the appetite while reading whets the mind," he said.
