The Panthers placed Matthew Tkachuk on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) at the start of March, ruling him out for the remainder of the regular season with a groin injury at that point and without knowing if he'd be available for the playoffs.
Tkachuk revealed on Monday that not even he was sure if he'd even be healthy in time to suit up for Game 1 of the first round back in April.
Speaking to reporters before Tuesday's Game 6, Tkachuk said the outlook was bleak just days before the postseason began.
'I didn't know if I was gonna come back at the start,' Tkachuk said. 'I kinda found out the day before (the playoffs) that I was gonna have a chance to play—the day of, honestly.'

Tkachuk had been dealing with a lower-body injury suffered during the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. The groin issue forced him to miss Florida's final 25 regular-season games after limiting him to just 6:47 of ice time in the 4 Nations final.
The uncertainty carried right up to the opening night of the playoffs.
'I thought there was maybe a 50% chance I wouldn't be playing about a week or five days before playoffs,' Tkachuk said. 'I'm very lucky and fortunate that I've got great trainers and doctors. They all somehow got me healthy enough to play.'

Tkachuk acknowledged that he wasn't close to 100% in the first round against Tampa Bay, which he called the worst of them "by far."

'The first round was definitely the worst I felt, by far,' Tkachuk said. 'I knew that even at nowhere close to what I expect out of myself, I needed to help out as best I (could). I was proud of myself and happy for playing that round.'
Tkachuk surely overtook any issue and has appeared in all 22 postseason games for the Panthers this playoffs, scoring 22 points, including seven goals and 15 assists, entering Game 6 against the Oilers on Tuesday.

Panthers prove too slick for Oilers, defend NHL title
The Florida Panthers have repeated as Stanley Cup champions by beating the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 in Game 6 of the final, becoming the NHL's first back-to-back winners since Tampa Bay in 2020 and '21 and the third team to do it this century. Sam Reinhart scored four goals, becoming just the fourth player in league history to get that many in a game in the final. His third to complete the hat-trick sent rats, along with hats, flying onto the ice. Matthew Tkachuk, one of the faces of the franchise, fittingly scored the Cup clincher on Tuesday night. At the other end of the ice, Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced. The visitors' only goal came from fellow Russian Vasily Podkolzin in garbage time, long after the outcome was decided. How we feelin', @FlaPanthers fans?! 😼 #StanleyCup — NHL (@NHL) June 18, 2025 Not long after the Lightning made three trips to the final in a row, Florida have done the same and now have the makings of a modern-day dynasty. The Panthers have won 11 of 12 playoff series since Matthew Tkachuk arrived by trade and Paul Maurice took over as coach in the summer of 2022. Stuart Skinner got the nod in Game 6 and was again done in by mistakes in front of him that ended with the puck in the net behind him and had his own blunder on Reinhart's second goal. Connor McDavid tried to take over but was again stymied by Aleksander Barkov, Seth Jones and Bobrovsky. He finished with seven points in his second career trip to the final, again denied his first title. Canada's Stanley Cup drought reached 31 seasons and 32 years dating to Montreal in 1993. Teams in the US Sun Belt have won it five of the past six times, four of them in Florida. This run through Tampa Bay in five, Toronto in seven, Carolina in five and Edmonton in six showed how clinical the Panthers have become under Maurice, who has coached more NHL games than everyone except Scotty Bowman, and is now a two-time champion.

Rockets Make Bold Trade Offer for Kevin Durant, but Suns Reject Key Piece
Rockets Make Bold Trade Offer for Kevin Durant, but Suns Reject Key Piece originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns are currently undergoing drastic changes at almost every level of their organization. Right after the conclusion of the regular season, the Suns fired head coach Mike Budenholzer after a disappointing 36-46 season. Shortly after, they made a rather shocking decision to move James Jones into a senior advisory role and Brian Gregory as the new general manager. Advertisement There were rumors at this past trade deadline that the Suns were actively shopping Durant and that they were close to a deal with the Golden State Warriors, but Durant wasn't intrigued by the reunion and asked the Suns they reconsider. The Suns opted to make one final push for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament, but Durant suffered a left ankle sprain and those hopes were dashed. Credit: Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images Rockets make bold Kevin Durant trade offer, Suns reject key piece There has been wide speculation as to which team(s) are possible suitors for Durant. One team that has been thrown around is the Houston Rockets. Of all the teams rumored to be in the mix, the Rockets can likely offer the Suns one of the better, if not the best, packages in exchange for the 15-time All-Star. Advertisement According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix, the Rockets have made a significant offer for Durant, but the Suns rejected a key piece. "The Rockets have offered Jalen Green and Jabari Smith for Kevin Durant but the Suns don't want Jalen Green," said Gambadoro. It could be argued that, of any player throughout the NBA Playoffs, Jalen Green's stock took a hit more than anybody. After averaging 21 points per game in the regular season, he averaged 13.28 per game in the seven-game series against the Golden State Warriors. That number is misleading. Green exploded for 38 points in Game 2, but was held under 15 points in the other six games and scored in the single digits four times. His style of play alongside Devin Booker and Bradley Beal would be questionable at best. It remains to be seen if the Suns have their eyes on a different player or are eying more draft compensation.
