Goa Temple Stampede Live Updates: In the early hours of Saturday, a stampede broke out during a temple festival at a village in North Goa, killing six while several others were injured, PTI reported citing officials.
The incident occurred at the Sree Lairai Devi temple in Shirgao village, according to a senior police official, PTI reported.
Thousands of devotees from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka had gathered at the temple for the festival.
Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and spoke to Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant.
PMO wrote on X, ' Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected.'

North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal told ANI, 'We are still trying to determine the exact cause of the incident. However, we have been told that the stampede might have happened due to some people spreading rumours.'
He added, "the biggest challenge for us was to peacefully vacate more than 50,000 people who were inside the temple for the (Larai) Zatra. Around 400 police personnel were deployed here for the Zatra. This is the first time something like this has happened on this occasion."

Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant informed that PM Narendra Modi spoke to him and assured total support.
Goa CM said in a post on X, 'Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning. I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families. I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure that every necessary measure is being taken. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with me and took detailed stock of the situation, offering his full support during this difficult time.'

Odisha bans sale of liquor in 2-km radius of Puri's Jagannath temple
The Odisha government has banned the sale of liquor within a 2-km radius of the Jagannath temple in Puri, state law and excise minister Prithviraj Harichandan said on Monday. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state also planned to ban the sale of meat along the 2.5-km Grand Road, or Bada Danda, where the idols of four deities are placed on chariots and pulled during the annual Rath Yatra, The Telegraph reported. The road, which connects Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple, is lined with hundreds of hotels. In a social media post on Monday, Harichandan said: 'The government is taking several steps to make the world-famous Puri a pilgrimage or tourist city and to awaken the religious sentiments of the people.' A day earlier, the minister said that the decision to enforce the ban was part of the state government's broader initiative to preserve the sanctity of the holy town, PTI reported. 'There will be no liquor shop or bar on the Grand Road,' PTI quoted Harichandan as having said. 'Besides, sale of meat…will also be banned on the Grand Road, which connects Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple.'
