From Gordon's Bay to Simon's Town: Elephant seal's travels raise questions
The appearance of a southern elephant seal at the naval base in Simon's Town – days after he was rescued wandering the streets of Gordon's Bay – has led to speculation about why the marine mammal enjoys time on land.
A comment on the Cape of Good Hope SPCA Facebook page suggested elephant seals come ashore to shed their skin once a year. The comment was accompanied by a question: Is this seal not trying to stay on land to do just that?
The SPCA, who assisted with the nearly nine-hour rescue operation to return the seal (who has since been dubbed 'Gordy) to the sea, responded: 'Exactly! Gordy likely came ashore to molt, which is completely natural — but his location in Gordon's Bay put him at risk from human activity. That's why we stepped in to relocate him safely, so he could continue the process undisturbed.'

As Gordy keeps his lips 'sealed', we'll never know the true reason why this magnificent marine mammal enjoys a stroll off the beach. However, judging by the love spread on social media, his land adventures will always be welcomed.
In true South African fashion, memes, sharp comments (like Shudley Daniels asking on Facebook if he is now a 'navy seal') and quirky adverts have since popped into the social media stream.

Parents and guardians in Gauteng should prepare for the 2026 online admissions process for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners, which opens on 24 July and closes on 29 August. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has urged families to ensure all necessary documents are ready ahead of the application window to avoid delays. To apply, parents must visit the official GDE website once applications go live. Required documents include certified copies of the parent's South African ID or passport, the child's birth certificate or relevant permits, and proof of home and work addresses. Grade 8 applicants must also submit their latest Grade 7 report, while Grade 1 applicants need a clinic card or immunisation report. In related news, Tanganani Primary School in Diepsloot has officially opened, ending weeks of disruption that kept hundreds of children out of school. Teaching began at the newly built school after construction delays and community protests pushed back its original opening date of 5 May. Community members had protested to demand local job opportunities linked to the school's construction. The unrest affected both the building schedule and the appointment of teaching staff. The Department said it responded swiftly to minimise the impact on learners. 'This measure ensured that academic activities continued while the recruitment of permanent educators proceeded according to the Department's Recruitment and Selection Policy,' said GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona. The recruitment process ended on 21 May, and the new teachers are expected to start on 2 June. Tanganani Primary is one of two new schools that have tackled severe overcrowding in Diepsloot. Earlier this month, the Department confirmed that 285 learners in the area had yet to attend school in 2025, 206 of them in primary grades. Although Tanganani now offers 18 classrooms, construction on the second school continues, and a third school remains in the planning stages. Still, officials have assured parents that the current facility is secure and ready for learning. #Letters: KwaDukuza is a town that has been left to rot My annual lament and woeful tale of sorrow for my beloved Stanger continues ad nauseam, after several people asked me to raise the issue again. The last time I wrote, I was somewhat optimistic when I declared that things were improving. Alas, I now retract and expunge that statement unconditionally. Things in Stanger are getting worse – dirty, filthy, defecated, urinated – and I daresay it will continue to deteriorate as the years unfold. A very sad indictment! What I cannot comprehend is: where are the paid councillors who are supposed to be concerned about the aesthetics of our town? Has their salary made them smug and complacent – content to neglect and gloss over the disintegration of our once-pristine town? Please, walk about or drive around and see what has happened. Toss away your suit and tie, roll up your sleeves, and get down to work. I was born and raised here, so I have firsthand experience of what Stanger used to be. Today, it is broken. On the same note, what drives some filthy urchins to strew litter around our town? The stale stench of faeces and urine is overpowering and revolting as I gingerly step along the streets and pavements, trying to avoid mounds of human excrement in the morning. Over the past two weeks, on my daily walks, I have witnessed many disgusting and despicable sights that would make even the strongest person throw up. Walking has become a huge challenge – it is deeply distressing and unfortunate. I have enclosed a few images for readers to gauge the extent of the damage being done to our town.
