Sarawak sees 46pc rise in commercial crimes, with RM77.7m lost to scams in first seven months
KUCHING, Aug 1 — Sarawak has recorded a worrying spike in commercial crime cases, with 2,256 incidents reported between January and July 30 this year. Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the reported cases involved losses amounting to RM77.7 million — an increase of 46.8 per cent compared to RM52.9 million in the same period last year. 'This equates to an average of around seven cases reported daily. 'If these trends are not curbed, total losses could exceed RM100 million by the end of the year, placing significant financial strain on victims and jeopardising household financial security in Sarawak,' he told a press conference here today. On scammers' modus operandi and tactics, Mancha said the fraudulent cases involved e-commerce scams, non-existent investment scams, money-lending scams, job scams, phone scams, as well as mule accounts. On the breakdown of victims, he said based on police data the majority were aged between 30 and 40 years (584), 18 and 29 (439), and 50 and above (267). 'Most of them consisted of those working in the private sector (497), followed by government servants (237), retirees (72), and the rest of them were students and those who are self-employed,' he said. He pointed out most of these cases were reported in urban areas. In terms of enforcement, Mancha said 867 suspects were arrested as of July, out of which 834 have been charged in court involving 827 investigation papers. 'Those prosecuted for mule accounts also increased to 832 individuals, compared to 639 people recorded last year,' he said. Based on an analysis of the cases, Mancha said the police identified key factors behind the public's vulnerability to scams, such as lack of awareness about how scammers operate, with many victims lured by promises of high investment returns within a short time. Panic and fear were also cited as major influences, particularly when scammers posed as authorities or bank representatives. 'In addition, many victims failed to verify the authenticity of phone numbers, account numbers, or suspicious links they received. 'Delayed reporting was another concern, with some victims feeling ashamed or embarrassed to admit they had been duped,' he said. He advised the public to exercise caution when confronted with offers or messages that appear too good to be true, and not to disclose their banking details to anyone. Phone numbers or bank accounts should be verified through the Whoscall app and the official Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Semak Mule portal. Family members are urged to educate elderly relatives and young people to be cautious of viral messages and unauthorised investment opportunities. Victims should also contact the National Scam Response Centre's (NSRC) 24-hour hotline on 997 should they fall victim to a scam. — The Borneo Post

Illegal crypto mining busted in Manjung as police seize 61 bitcoin machines in electricity theft crackdown
IPOH, Aug 1 — Police seized 61 bitcoin mining machines, believed to be linked to electricity theft, through an integrated operation with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) at nine separate locations around the Manjung district yesterday. Manjung police chief ACP Hasbullah Abdul Rahman said the integrated operation was conducted following intelligence and surveillance by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Manjung Police Headquarters (IPD) and a TNB technical team after receiving complaints about activities involving electricity theft. 'The raids, carried out simultaneously, led to the seizure of 61 mining rigs, nine wifi modems, nine routers and various equipment and connection cables. 'Preliminary investigations found that the premises involved conducted Bitcoin mining activities by carrying out illegal electrical connections, resulting in huge losses to TNB,' he said in a statement today. He added that TNB estimated the loss of electricity in each premises reached thousands of ringgit per month. 'All the machines operate non-stop daily and require very high electricity usage, besides disrupting the electricity supply in the area. 'Not only is this illegal, it can also pose a risk of fire and danger to life and property as the wiring systems have been modified illegally and do not comply with safety standards,' he said. The seized items were taken to the Manjung IPD, and the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief, including electricity theft, and Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 for tampering with electrical installations. He urged those with information to contact the Manjung IPD at 05-688 6222, the WhatsApp hotline at 017-682 8005 or the nearest police station. — Bernama

Sepanggar MP rejects claim linking wife to Zara Qairina's death, calls it baseless
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Sepanggar MP Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has firmly denied claims linking his wife to the recent death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir, calling the allegation baseless and unbecoming of a Muslim lawmaker. He was responding to remarks made by Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan during a Dewan Rakyat debate, which Mustapha said were misleading and unfairly targeted someone no longer in public service. 'These claims not only confuse the public, but also damage the reputation of an individual who retired from government service months ago,' he said in a statement today. Mustapha, who is also deputy minister of higher education, clarified that his wife, Datin Rosnih Nasir, was formerly the principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar. She served at the school from March 20 to November 22, 2024 before retiring from the education sector. 'Since then, she has had no involvement in the school's administration or operations,' he added. He stressed that the incident involving Zara Qairina occurred on July 16 to 17, 2025, nearly eight months after his wife's retirement. 'Linking her to the incident is baseless and amounts to political manipulation,' he said. He urged all parties to verify information before making public accusations and not to exploit the tragedy for political purposes. 'Respect the ongoing investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and stop spreading false claims that can harm the reputation and emotional wellbeing of innocent individuals,' he said. Mustapha also offered his condolences to Zara Qairina's family, expressing hopes that justice would be served. Earlier, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said investigations were ongoing into the death of a female student at a school in Papar. The Form One student was believed to have fallen from the third floor of her hostel building. Zara Qairina was found critically injured around 3am on July 16 and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for treatment, where she later died.
