CHRISTOPHER STEVENS reviews last night's TV: No scheming, no scenery, no risk... Brydon's travel game has no point

Destination X (BBC1)
The Beatles didn't invent the mystery tour. A century ago, holidaymakers were paying their pound for a ride to some surprise seaside town in an open–topped bus called a charabanc.
Rob Brydon is attempting to update the tradition in Destination X, taking 13 travellers and sending them off who–knows–where in a luxury coach.
To win the game, and £100,000, all they have to do is guess where they are.
But the fun of an old–fashioned mystery tour lies in the sights and discoveries along the way. Rob has ruined it by making sure nobody, including the viewers, has a clue what country they're in, let alone what the views are like.
The coach windows are blacked out. When the players do step outside, they wear electronic goggles that allow them only the briefest of glimpses.
In one of the show's many ill–judged twists, there are miniature cameras inside the goggles, so we can see the contestants' eyeballs staring around blindly.
At one point, all goggled up, they were loaded onto helicopters and whirled around the countryside. This exercise in sensory deprivation and disorientation made me feel queasy, just watching it.
But I'd rather go flying in a blindfold than spend a night on the claustrophobic Destination X dormitory coach, fitted out with narrow bunkbeds along a narrow corridor, like the cabins in a submarine.
'I hope people have got good hygiene,' worried 22–year–old Mahdi, the youngest player. The following morning, he packed his suitcase and quit the game. Let's pray it was just the snoring he couldn't stand.
The game began with a blizzard of feints and fakery that seemed to have no real point. The players arrived at an airport in Baden–Baden that was clearly not real: the baggage counter was between the duty–free shop and the boarding gate, with not a customs officer in sight.
Most of the 'passengers' were extras, who stood up on a signal and walked out together. More artificial still, the actors playing airport staff were chosen because they had identical twins – so that similar faces could pop up at different places along the route.
By now, Destination X, which continues tonight, was starting to resemble an art 'happening', and it didn't get any less contrived when the players were herded into a box in the middle of a provincial town, somewhere in Central Europe.
Every so often, a slot like a letterbox opened and the travellers crowded round trying to spy clues.
Brydon, parading in a double–breasted blazer like a Pontins holiday rep, did his best to inject some laughs, but his script didn't have one memorable line.
If the Beeb was trying to combine The Traitors with Race Across The World, it's succeeded - but only by losing the best bits from both shows. There's no skulduggery, no sensational scenery, no jeopardy, no excitement and no point.

Oasis skip huge song at Murrayfield despite Noel saying it's 'one of the best I've written'

Oasis returned to Murrayfield Stadium this weekend for their first Scottish gig in 16 years but the pair did not play all of their number one singles. Oasis played two incredible sell out gigs at Murrayfield Stadium this weekend which came as their first Scottish gig in 16 years. The Gallagher brothers took to the stage in the Capital to crowds of around 135,000 across Friday and Saturday evening and are set to finish their three night run in Scotland on Tuesday August 12. ‌ The Manchester based band have several ties to Scotland after first being 'discovered' at King Tuts in Glasgow and playing iconic gigs such as their Loch Lomond performance in 1996. Despite this, Noel Gallagher has still made eyebrow raising comments about Scotland as he previously branded it a 'third world country' during a now resolved feud with Lewis Capaldi. ‌ However, Liam and Noel, who finally put their long-standing rift to bed after a decade and a half last year, appeared to be having the time of their life on stage. Oasis played many of their iconic fan favourite hits, including Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger, Slide Away and Live Forever while each gig ended with Champagne Supernova and a firework display. ‌ The band played 23 of their hits to fans but a few of them were noticeably missing from the setlist - including one which Noel Gallagher previously said was one of the best songs he's ever written. A notable tune that was absent from their performance was Stop Crying Your Heart Out (2002) as well as their fourth number one single, All Around The World, which was released in 1998. Taken from their third album, Be Here Now, the song is nine minutes long, although a shorter version of under five was released for the radio. ‌ The two other singles from Be Here Now - D'You Known What I Mean and Stand By Me - have been played during the concerts. While other number-one singles like The Importance of Being Idle have also not been featured, Noel once said that All Around the World was one of the best songs he'd ever written. He wrote it before the band became a global sensation but delayed its release as he wanted to do the production justice. ‌ Noel even compared it to the The Beatles' Hey Jude, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest songs of all time. Speaking at the time of its release, he said: "...the longer the better as far as I'm concerned. If it's good. I can see what people are going to say, but f**k 'em, basically. ‌ "The lyrics are teeny-poppy. But there are three key changes towards the end. Imagine how much better Hey Jude would have been with three key changes towards the end." The famous track also features backing vocals from Richard Ashcroft, the former Verve frontman who is the support act for Oasis on their tour. Noel and Liam's then-wives Meg Mathews and Patsy Kensit also feature. Other number ones that didn't feature are Go Let It out, The Hindu Times and Lyla while other classic album tracks such as She's Electric didn't make the cut either. The set list from Saturday night at Murrayfield was: Hello Acquiesce Some Might Say Bring It On Down Cigarettes & Alcohol Fade Away Supersonic Roll With It Talk Tonight Half The World Away Little by Little D'You Know What I Mean Stand By Me Cast No Shadow Slide Away Whatever Live Forever Rock 'N' Roll Star The Masterplan Don't Look Back In Anger Wonderwall Champagne Supernova Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Revealed: The reason why Gen Z are breaking the bank to go on holiday... and how much they go over budget

Holidays used to be about making memories. But for younger generations they seem to be about making their peers jealous – whatever the cost. Nearly three quarters of Gen Z and millennials admit that capturing social media content is the most important factor in planning a trip, which they will go on even if they cannot afford it. On average Gen Z go over budget on holiday by £2,200, but that would appear to be the price to pay if you think documenting every aspect of your lives is a generational expectation – as 90 per cent do. Almost six in ten admit to going into the red to pay for a trip. And seven in ten say they feel obliged to go on holidays they can't afford. 'Cocktail at golden hour' is the top post, according to younger Britons (30 per cent), followed by 'the airport tipple' (27 per cent) and 'the holiday dinner table' (23 per cent). Other moments Brits are breaking the bank to post are 'the classic mirror selfie in hotel lift', 'the gelato close up' and 'showing off your #booktok by the pool'. Funds are also spent by a quarter of the youngsters on exclusive beach clubs (25 per cent), and they have bought holiday outfits that have left them short of cash (23 per cent). Gen Z have even gone as far as to use their student loan to pay for a holiday (18 per cent) or take out a loan to cover the expense (14 per cent). And the holidays come in thick and fast – with Gen Z and Millennials claiming they're expected to fork out for an average of seven trips a year, research by holiday company First Choice found. Yet nearly four in ten (39 percent) say there is a definite wealth gap between them and richer pals, while 71 percent feel obliged to go on trips they don't have the cash for. And as many as 57 percent feel embarrassed if they can't afford it, while 38 percent feel upset seeing holiday plans unfold on a group WhatsApp chat knowing they will struggle to go. But breaking the bank may be worth it for some, as 27 per cent said that regular holidays are the key to a happy life.

Loose Women star dresses up as a granny in a grey permed wig and makeshift BBL as she celebrates her birthday in London

Loose Women star GK Barry dressed up as a granny in a grey curly wig as she celebrated her 26th birthday at The Prince in London on Saturday night. The TikTok star, whose real name is Grace Keeling, revealed on Instagram that she was thrown the surprise celebration by footballer girlfriend Ella Rutherford. Grace looked thrilled to dress up as 'Nana GK' as she donned a patterned dress with a pink cardigan as she partied with friends. She rocked the grey permed wig with pink curlers in and accessoried with pink framed glasses, comfortable white shoes and a pearl necklace. The I'm A Celebrity star sipped on prosecco as she posed with a blow up walking stick and a zimmer frame. In one picture, Grace pulled up her long dress flashing a jumper stuck to her bottom creating a fake BBL as she penned: '#Nosurgery and #haterswillsayitspadding'. She flashed her gorgeous smile as she blew out the candles on her huge cake before playing beer pong and being lifted into the air by her pals. Ella also treated Grace to a giant LED 'HBDGRACE' letters which were displayed in the pub as well as a personalised 'Grace is 26' photo board and pink balloons. The ITV star was also joined by I'm A Celebrity co-star Melvin Odoom during the bash, who opted to avoid fancy dress in a white T-shirt. She wrote: 'Surprise bday party for nana gk x thank u to @theprincelondon for having us and sorry for what you witnessed'. It comes after Grace broke her silence on the upcoming ITV cuts and has revealed whether viewers can expect to still see her on their screens. It was revealed back in May that the show has been axed for half of the year and Lorraine's runtime has been slashed by 30 minutes, as Daytime bosses announced cuts with job losses in excess of 220. According to insiders, once ITV's budget cuts come into effect in January, Loose Women will no longer have A-list guests in the studio, and the broadcast is planned to only consist of the panel debating newsworthy topics from the week. Now, in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail, Grace has revealed she has no plans to leave the show. She explained: 'I think so, I think I'm still on. I'm pretty sure I'm still there. Obviously the cuts are such a shame, but I'm very glad that Loose Women is still able to be on because I think it's so important to have a women-led show on.' Grace is the youngest ever panellist to appear on Loose Women and was born in the year the ITV daytime show started. Reflecting on her time on the show since joining in 2024, Grace added: 'I'm not gonna lie, I was terrified on my first episode. 'I was like, "None of these women know me, are they gonna think I'm weird," but hand on heart, they are the loveliest women I have ever met in my life. They are so welcoming, and it's just such a fun show. 'I think it's important to have a show on the telly that is all women-based, and it's one of the few that is. The audience are amazing. They always give it large, and you get to speak your mind and no one judges you for it, which is nice.' 'People believe it's just women arguing, but every time I've had a differing opinion on the panel, they're just like, 'that's cool,' no one's had a problem with it.' The influencer has seen her career skyrocket since jetting off to Australia last November for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! Grace finished in fifth place and was evicted on day 20 of the competition, while McFly's Danny Jones went on to win the ITV show. Grace is once again taking her popular podcast Saving Grace to venues across the UK as part of a Jungle Fever Tour special. The show promises a 'night of feral fun' with gossip, special surprises, and celebrity guests. Grace has also been focusing on charity work and recently visited C9 the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at Addenbrooke's Hospital. She was joined by girlfriend and professional footballer Ella Rutherford to meet cancer staff and bring joy to young people on the unit. Grace went viral after she shared a video showing off what she really looked like behind the glamour of carefully edited Instagram - and it sparked a trend of other influencers doing the same. The video racked up almost 94,000 likes, and social media users from around the world then began replicating the video and using her voiceover to expose how they actually look when posting online. She soon gained a huge following and within a year, had amassed a whopping one million followers on the video-sharing platform. At present, she now has a huge 4.1million followers on TikTok and an impressive 1.8million fans on Instagram. Cambridge-born Grace went on to create her own podcast, Saving Grace, in April 2022 and has interviewed numerous celebrities including Coleen Nolan, Olivia Bowen and Alan Carr. In early 2024, GK took the podcast, which is also uploaded as a vodcast on YouTube, on a sold-out tour around the country.
