Penguins get knitted jumpers to keep them warm

BBC News09-05-2025

Little knitted jumpers are being used to prevent penguins caught in oil spills from getting ill while trying to clean their feathers.A group of knitters based in care home in Teesside - calling themselves the Knitting Nannas - have been sending their creations to a penguin charity in Australia. The woolly tops are used as a barrier to stop the birds swallowing toxic chemicals when they try to clean themselves after swimming through oil.One of the Knitting Nannas, Joyce who is 94, explained that she has knitted jumpers for both her children but she had "never knit for a penguin" before.
Phillip Island, south of Melbourne in Australia, is home to 40,000 penguins and preparation is ongoing to help look after them in the event of an oil spill.Jumpers can be temporarily placed on an affected penguin until its feathers can be cleaned by rescue workers.Thanking the Knitting Nannas, Rebecca Passlow from the Penguin Foundation- which is based there - said "generous knitters and groups from all around the world" have been making jumpers to help.
Speaking to BBC News reporter Tom Burgess, care home activities coordinator Sharon Lewis said that she loves finding worthwhile projects for the knitting group."The residents love getting involved and using their lifelong skills to support others."It's always incredible to receive pictures of cute animals wearing their knitted items."In the past, the nannas have also knitted blankets for baby rhinos, which were sent to a wild rhino sanctuary in South Africa.

Missing Pheobe Bishop's housemates charged with murder 21 days after teen vanished – but body still hasn't been found

THE housemates of missing teen Phoebe Bishop have been charged with murder, nearly a month after she went missing. James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33, have each been charged with one count of murder and two counts of interfering with a corpse. 3 3 Police arrested Wood - the last person to see the teen on the trip to the airport - on Wednesday, before being released just hours later. But he and his partner Bromley have now been arrested and charged - three weeks after Phoebe's last known sighting. It comes after a gruelling search mission which was ended earlier this week. 17-year-old Phoebe, from Gin Gin, north of Brisbane, has not been seen or heard from since Thursday, May 15. Her feared corpse is yet to be found. Police said: "Detectives continue to investigate this matter, and physical searches will continue as needed as information is provided." They made the arrest in the Bundaberg area and are due to appear in court on Friday. The arrest comes after Wood told the Daily Mail that Pheobe had been complaining and having emotional outbursts before they left to the airport. He said: "She gets like that sometimes and usually we can calm her down but she was escalating and then she smashed the TV". On the drive to the airport, Wood, his girlfriend Bromley, and Pheobe argued over whether the car could stop. Pheobe wanted to do her makeup in the car before they arrived despite their being bathrooms at the airport, Wood said. She was on her way to, Perth, Western Australia to visit her "high-school sweetheart" boyfriend. So, he pulled over, less than a kilometre away from their destination. He said: "We wanted to give her five minutes, give her her own space to do what she needed to do." Wood and Bromley then walked off and were away from Pheobe and the car for five minutes, he said. When he returned, he said Pheobe and her bag were gone. Wood insisted to the news outlet he had nothing to do with her disappearance and had gone looking for her with Bromley. After not being able the find the teen, he assumed that she had boarded her flight. .
