An Indian tennis player was allegedly shot dead by her father — prompting an outpouring of grief.
Radhika Yadav, 25, died in Gurugram, India on Thursday afternoon. Her father Deepak Yadav has been arrested.
Gurugram Police were notified by a hospital in the city that a woman had died due to bullet injuries, but when they arrived only Radhika's uncle, Kuldeep Yadav, was present.
According to reports, Kuldeep is said to have lodged a complaint over the death of his niece at the Gurugram Sector 56 police station.
The incident which unfolded at their residence reportedly came after Deepak objected to a tennis academy being run by his daughter.
Deepak is said to have voiced his objections over the work his daughter was doing when the disagreement between the pair turned dark.
'He (Deepak) had been upset for a while as he was being taunted by locals over his daughter's income,' police officer Vinod Kumar told The Indian Express.
'He was troubled by their remarks - they would keep saying the house is running on her money, and he is too dependent on that.
'He had asked her (Radhika) several times earlier to stop working at the academy, but she refused. He could not take it anymore,'
NDTV reported Deepak had admitted to committing the crime to police, saying he had fired five bullets at his daughter, four of which struck her.
Himaanshika Singh Rajput, a friend of Radhika, took to Instagram to convey her dismay at her passing.
'Radhika was my best friend. Just two days ago, I stood at her cremation, trying to process the unimaginable — that she was no longer here,' she wrote in the caption of her video.
'Radhika didn't deserve this. She didn't deserve to die like this. She was bright, kind, full of dreams and life. And now, she's gone.
'This should never have happened. And it cannot be forgotten.'
Radhika's tennis career saw her play 36 singles matches and 7 doubles matches on the ITF circuit.
Her final singles match took place in March, 2024 while she last played a doubles contest in June, 2023.

Teenager pleads guilty to murder of Vyleen White at Redbank Plains

The teenager charged over the stabbing death of 70-year-old Ipswich woman Vyleen White during a carjacking almost 18 months ago has pleaded guilty to her murder. In February last year Ms White was fatally wounded in the chest at an underground car park at a Redbank Plains shopping centre. On Tuesday, the now 17-year-old, who cannot be named under Queensland's youth justice laws, appeared in the Supreme Court in Brisbane for an arraignment. In front of Ms White's husband and other family members seated in the gallery, the teenager entered pleas of guilty to several charges including murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle in company. He also pleaded guilty to unrelated stealing offences. At the time of his arrest, it was alleged the then 16-year-old had stabbed Ms White whilst trying to steal her car. The teenager, who has been on remand since his arrest, was returned to custody ahead of his sentencing. A hearing date has been set down for November.

Joshua Dale Brown: Police seek more time to prepare case against alleged Melbourne childcare abuser

Police have been granted additional time to prepare their case against a man accused of abusing children in Melbourne childcare centres. Joshua Dale Brown, 26, was charged in May with more than 70 offences including sexual activity in presence of a child under 16, sexual assault of a child under 16 and possessing child abuse material. He has yet to enter pleas to the charges. Mr Brown had been remanded in custody and was expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on September 15. But high-profile barrister Rishi Nathwani SC appeared in court on Tuesday as prosecutors requested additional time to prepare a hand-up brief of their evidence. Magistrate Donna Bakos approved the request for police to Mr Brown's lawyers by a deadline of December 4. His case was made public on July 1 after a suppression order was lifted, with police alleging Mr Brown abused eight children between the ages of five months and two years old. Since then, police have established Brown worked at 23 childcare centres across Melbourne between January 2017 and May 2025, urging parents and carers to have 2000 children tested for sexually transmitted infections. On July 15, Victoria Police said establishing Mr Brown's work history had been 'extremely complex' due to childcare providers not having centralised records. The force said the investigation remains 'ongoing' and 'active', expecting to release further updates in the coming weeks. In a statement, Acting Commander of Victoria Police's Crime Command Janet Stevenson said the investigation remains the 'highest priority' for police. 'We are working through a large amount of information that has been provided to us,' she said. 'I understand there are people who will be frustrated and I want to reinforce that this is a continually evolving and changing situation. 'I also want to remind people, especially those struggling with this news, that there is a number of support services readily available for impacted parties and I strongly encourage people to seek those out.'

At least 20 dead as military plane crashes into school in Bangladesh

At least 20 people, mostly students, have died and over 170 have been injured after a military training aircraft crashed into a school campus in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka. The Air Force plane was taking part in a routine training mission when it experienced a mechanical issue and hit the Milestone School and College campus in the Uttara neighbourhood in the city's north on Monday afternoon. Bangladesh Air Force's F-7 BGI training aircraft took off at 1.06pm local time (5.06pm AEST) from the military base in Kurmitola, and crashed shortly afterwards. A military statement said 20 people were killed, including the pilot, and 171 others were injured. Many of the victims were young students who had just been let out of class. 'The pilot … made a valiant attempt to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas. Despite his best efforts, the aircraft … crashed into a two-storey building belonging to Milestone school and college,' military spokesperson Lt Col Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury said. At least 83 people are undergoing treatment in several hospitals, many of them with burns, the office of Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus said. The well-known private school offers education to children from kindergarten through to senior secondary. Most of the injured were aged between eight and 14. 'Created a boom' An intense fire and thick smoke can be seen engulfing part of the building in video footage taken in the aftermath of the crash. An AFP photographer at the scene saw fire and rescue officials taking away the injured students on stretchers. A witness said he heard a huge blast that felt like an earthquake. 'We have two playgrounds, one for the senior students and one for the juniors,' said Shafiur Rahman Shafi, 18, a student of the school. 'We were on the playground for the seniors. Suddenly one of the two fighter planes crashed here (in the junior playground),' he told AFP. 'It created a boom, and it felt like a quake. Then it caught fire, and the army reached the spot later.' Tofazzal Hossain, 30, broke down in tears on learning that his young cousin had been killed. 'We frantically searched for my cousin in different hospitals,' Hossain told AFP. 'He was an eighth grader. Finally, we found his body.' 'Profound pain for the nation' The interim government announced a day of national mourning on Tuesday. Grieving parents and relatives of the victims thronged the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the capital, local media reported. Many were trying to identify their children by their uniform and other belongings. Yunus expressed 'deep grief and sorrow' over the incident in a post on X. 'The loss suffered by the Air Force, the students, parents, teachers, and staff of Milestone School and College, as well as others affected by this accident, is irreparable,' he said. 'This is a moment of profound pain for the nation.' Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was 'deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives' in Dhaka. Relations between the neighbours have been strained since protesters in Bangladesh last year ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, an old ally of New Delhi. 'India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance,' Mr Modi wrote on X. The crash was the deadliest aviation accident in the country in several decades. The deadliest ever disaster happened in 1984 when a plane flying from Chattogram to Dhaka crashed, killing all 49 on board. Last month, a commercial aircraft crashed in neighbouring India, killing 260 people.
