Group urges M'sians to reject MACC's 15-year 'PR show' on Beng Hock

Malaysiakini4 days ago
The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) has urged the public to dismiss MACC's recent apology over Teoh's death, branding it merely a 'public relations show', years after his death.
TBH-ADA chairperson Ng Yap Hwa said Malaysians should emulate DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang's resolve in rejecting a similar apology from then-MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed.
In a statement today, Ng also called on the government to...

Detractors slam PMX's no-brainer 'electricity tariff hike with cheaper electric bill for majority rakyat'

MAN-ON-THE-STREET Malaysians are seemingly at odds with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's seemingly illogical argument that the recent rise in electricity tariff will not burden majority of the population. This came about as they reacted critically to a Facebook video of PMX reiterating that the hike which came into effect on July 1 is only intended for highly profitable industries during his monthly meeting with staff of the Prime Minister's Department yesterday (July 21). 'There're those trying to spread lies and false narratives that the rakyat are burdened by the restructuring of electricity tariffs. Yes, tariffs have increased but electricity bills have decreased for majority of the rakyat,' asserted PMX who is also the Finance Minister. 'The reality is that 85% of consumers are exempted while the overall electricity cost has decreased by 19% from 55.95 sen/kWh to 45.40 sen/kWh.' As PMX urged the entire civil service machinery and related agencies to work together to strengthen the explanation of government policies so that 'real facts don't continue to be drowned by slander and distortion', some cheeky commenters remarked that 'only Walanon (slang for PMX's loyalists) would believe PMX's fairy tales'. Others went on to label him as 'a liar the moment he opens his mouth' while a few found PMX's justification as 'not making sense no matter how one looks at it'. This is when many sensible commenters stepped in to school PMX that it is simple logic that 'when electricity tariff for industry goes up, production cost will have to rise in tandem' with the commoners having to bear the brunt of pricier goods and services at the end of the day. 'Can you stop confusing the rakyat that 'when tariffs go up, bills come down?'.' lambasted a commenter with a seemingly constructive argument. 'Yes, tariffs go up for big industries. But those industries are the ones that provide basic consumer needs – food, drinks, factories, logistics. When their electricity costs go up, the prices of goods go up. In the end, it's the people who end up paying more.' Continued the commenter: 'So, what's the point of a household electricity bill going down by RM2 if the cost of putting food on the table goes up by RM50? 'Don't hide behind the statistic '85% of consumers are exempted' if the chain effect remains that it'll burn a hole in the people's pocket. 'Don't spin if you truly want to help the rakyat … Economic facts cannot be manipulated like political slogans.' Many echoed a similar sentiment with many furious commenters hit out at PMX for treating them as fools. Well, one commenter wondered if the Madani government is able to mobilise its price check enforcement squad from the Domestic Trade and Living Costs Ministry to go from one factory to another nationwide to curb profiteering or to ensure there is no cost pass down of electricity tariff hike to consumers. – July 22, 2025

Joining rally doesn't mean disloyal to king, country

YOURSAY | 'Malaysians have the right to attend the function or stay away.' Stay away from 'Turun Anwar' rally, chief secretary tells civil servants Vijay47: Chief Secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, the 'Turun Anwar' (Down with Anwar) gathering is a properly constituted event even if not everyone shares its intention. A permit has been applied for and, in a surprising turn of reality, granted by the police. So, how does attending it break any law? How is a legal activity against the king and country? All Malaysians, including civil servants, have the right to attend the function or stay away. Nobody needs your permission, thank you very much. I would suggest that instead of earning more ridicule and contempt, you stick closely to what you were appointed for - the proper management of the civil service. My small relief is that you, like many others of similar intelligence, did not claim that attendance at the rally would be against the Constitution. V S: Civil servants should not think for themselves, as the Madani government thinks for them, says the chief secretary. It is the right of every Malaysian civil servant or otherwise to freedom of expression. You have no right to make such threats just because they are civil servants. They have a mind of their own. Try saying that to the civil servants in Kelantan and Terengganu. They know who to choose. Zaheed: Instead of making the civil service more efficient, the chief secretary to the government is more concerned about civil servants attending the protest. Learn to be efficient like the private sector. What is happening? Are the departments sleeping, or have they failed to keep up with the times and age? T Mataz: The chief secretary must put out a public notice, that any federal government employees found to have participated in the 'Turun Anwar' rally on July 26, will automatically be dismissed from service and their pension benefits will be forfeited. This action is permissible, as all federal government employees have pledged their support for the elected and royally appointed federal government. This is the fact, and there shouldn't be any ambiguity from the chief secretary's office. If that's considered too harsh, then red flag the most troublemakers among them, ensuring they are never promoted to higher office for their disrespect to the king and country. Darmakochi: Participating in a rally scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on July 26 does not mean you are not loyal to the king and the country. Expressing displeasure toward someone whose performance is below the expectations of most of the citizens who had voted him for that position has nothing to do with 'loyalty to king and country', This rally is to highlight the problems caused by this Madani government. OceanMasterII: Indeed. What they say may not be right, but under the Constitution, they have the freedom of speech and expression, including gathering in public space to express their dissatisfaction orderly over the government of the day. That includes expressing dissatisfaction over the prime minister, who is an elected representative of the people. Which part of the law are they breaching, and where does the loyalty to the king and country come into question? If the civil servants have the right to vote in electing their representative, they must have the right to express their dissatisfaction if their elected representative is not performing. Fyddeep: All this 'Turun' nonsense. Why no 'Turun Umno' (Down with Umno) for supporting a convict? Why no protest against (former prime minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) for not paying his fine, among other things? All these are empty vessels making unwanted noises. For our country to progress, we must stop all this nonsense. Go and do your work instead of making noise every day. The above is a selection of comments posted by Malaysiakini subscribers. Govt may make compulsory MyDigital ID registration

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is considering legislation to encourage, or make compulsory, MyDigital ID registration among Malaysians, the Dewan Rakyat heard yesterday. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the voluntary nature of registration had hindered uptake. "Encouraging wider adoption has been challenging due to its voluntary registration nature. This requires discussion, particularly on strategies to boost participation. "The government is exploring the option of introducing legislation that could promote or require Malaysians to register for MyDigital ID," she said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran). Kiandee said the recent autogate system glitch had sparked public concerns about the broader digital initiative, particularly on data privacy and security, the role of implementing agencies, digital accessibility and potential misuse. He also noted MyDigital ID's low adoption rate compared to platforms like Padu and Budi Madani. Dr Zaliha said the autogate incident had understandably raised worries among the public. "However, security measures are being strengthened for MyDigital ID, which ensures that security protocols are strictly maintained, data is not stored, and overall safety is prioritised." She said the government was working closely with various entities, including the private sector, to boost the adoption and utilisation of MyDigital ID across various services. Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha said registrations rose to 2.8 million as of the second quarter of this year, an increase from 1.8 million in the first quarter. "The number is expected to continue rising with the expansion of 'use case', referring to applications or services where MyDigital ID is used." She said this included logging into the MyGOV portal, the MyJPJ app and verification for prepaid SIM card owners. "This is because each new use case creates a demand for digital identity verification, thereby driving up registration among the public." Integrations have expanded to 35 government systems, with another 17 in the implementation stage and 21 in early discussions. "Seven non-government application systems have been integrated, with two more in the process, totalling 82 systems, nearly double March's figure." MyDigital ID will also extend to digital applications in the financial and banking sectors.
