Afghanistan cricket team arrive in Pakistan to play first Champions Trophy tournament
ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan's national cricket team arrived in the eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday to play their first Champions Trophy tournament, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said with only days left for the international tournament to kick off.
The eight-nation tournament kicks off in the southern port city of Karachi on Feb. 19. Defending champions Pakistan will take on New Zealand in the city in the tournament opener whereas Afghanistan will kick off the event with their first encounter against South Africa in the same city.
Led by skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan will play their second match of the tournament against England in Lahore on Feb. 21 before meeting Australia on Feb. 28 in the eastern city.
'Afghanistan's cricket team have arrived in Lahore to take part in the Champions Trophy,' the PCB said in a statement. 'This is the first time that Afghanistan are taking part in the Champions Trophy.'
Afghanistan were dealt a blow when teenage spinner AM Ghazanfar was ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury this week.
'Afghanistan's young spin-bowling sensation, AM Ghazanfar, has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy due to a fracture in the L4 vertebra, specifically in the left pars interarticularis,' the team confirmed via a statement.
'He sustained the injury during Afghanistan's recently held tour Zimbabwe, and will be sidelined for a minimum of four months and will remain under treatment during this period.'
Afghanistan's spin department is already missing experienced spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Asia Cup in limbo after India-Pakistan conflict
NEW DELHI, India: This year's Asia Cup hangs in the balance following the recent clashes between tournament hosts India and arch-rivals Pakistan. Already-soured relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors further worsened after four days of intense fighting before a ceasefire was announced last month. India are scheduled to host the Asia Cup, a flagship event of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), in September but uncertainty lingers over the T20 tournament. 'To be honest, we have had no discussions within the board about the Asia Cup,' a top official of the Indian cricket board (BCCI) told Reuters on Tuesday, refusing to confirm whether the tournament will go ahead as scheduled. 'We will cross that bridge when we come to it,' the PCB told Reuters in a statement. ACC president Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the PCB, was not available to comment. The ACC on Monday announced the postponement of the women's Emerging Asia Cup, which was due to begin on Friday, citing weather conditions and the spread of the viral disease chikungunya in host nation Sri Lanka. India will host the women's 50-overs World this year but Pakistan will play all their matches in Sri Lanka under an arrangement made by the International Cricket Council. India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy this year and played all their matches, including the March 9 final, in Dubai. Bilateral cricket has been suspended since 2013 between the Asian neighbors, who play each other only in multi-team events. India head coach Gautam Gambhir is against playing Pakistan even in neutral venues but will follow whatever the BCCI decided, he said last month.

Pakistan and Bangladesh begin T20I series today
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan are all set to take on Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series commencing from today, Wednesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement. The second T20I will be held on Friday, May 30, while the third and final T20I of the series is scheduled on June 1. Salman Ali Agha will lead Pakistan, while Litton Das will captain Bangladesh. All three T20Is will be played at Lahore's Qaddafi Stadium, which will host its first T20I series after going through a complete renovation earlier this year. 'The boys are doing well as a unit. A lot of our players are coming off strong performances in the HBL PSL X, which is one of the most competitive T20 tournaments in the world. That form and momentum are something we are hoping to carry into this series,' Agha was quoted as saying in a PCB statement. 'Bangladesh are a quality side with talented players and we are expecting a good challenge from them. I believe fans are in for some thrilling cricket over the next few days.' Das, the Bangladesh captain, said his team was 'focused and understands the challenge Pakistan poses, especially in their home conditions.' The 2009 world champions Pakistan have endured a significant downturn in the last 12 months and crashed out in the first round of the World Cup in 2024. They have won only three of their last 13 T20Is, two against minnows Zimbabwe, and slumped to eighth in the T20I rankings. With a new head coach in New Zealand's Mike Hesson they are looking to younger players with the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka just eight months away. Star batsmen Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi, have all been axed. Salman Agha will lead the side, having lost a series in New Zealand 4-1 two months ago. Bangladesh, ranked ninth, are in the same boat. They have won just four of their last 12 T20Is and lost series against lower-ranked United States (2024) and United Arab Emirates earlier this month. PM Sharif praises PSL teams for ‘excellent sportsmanship' as Lahore lift title trophy
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday praised all Pakistan Super League (PSL) teams for demonstrating 'excellent sportsmanship' in the tournament after Lahore Qalandars lifted the trophy for a third time. Lahore Qalandars registered a six-wicket win over Quetta Gladiators on Sunday, with Sikandar Raza, who landed in Lahore just ten minutes before the toss, hitting the winning runs. Needing 13 in the last over to complete a 202-run chase set by Quetta, the 39-year old Zimbabwean completed the task during his seven-ball 22 not out with two sixes and as many boundaries. In a statement issued from his office, Sharif praised Quetta Gladiators and Lahore Qalandars for their excellent performance in the final match of the tenth edition of PSL. 'Lahore Qalandars successfully achieved the target after a thrilling match,' he was quoted as saying. 'All the teams involved in PSL 10 showed excellent sportsmanship.' Lahore Qalandars won their previous titles in 2022 and 2023. The prime minister congratulated Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the PCB administration on the successful conduct of the Twnety20 tournament. 'The prime minister paid tribute to all the players, especially the foreign players, whose participation made this successful event possible,' Sharif's office said. The tournament was put into jeopardy following a cross-border conflict between Pakistan and India this month. Both neighbors clashed for four days before agreeing to a United States-brokered ceasefire agreement on May 10. Pakistan rescheduled PSL after a ten-day break, while the Indian Premier League — the world's richest cricket tournament — was also interrupted.
