Not cool: AC and refrigerator sales witness sharp decline

Time of India30-04-2025

After a buoyant start in March, fear has gripped summer product companies with sales of air-conditioners and refrigerators slipping sharply in April in some geographies like the South and East pushing down overall growth rates. Beverages makers said sales have been marginally impacted in select markets where April has seen lower temperatures, but added that at a national level, demand is growing in double digits.
Sales of air-conditioners fell by over 20 per cent year-on-year nationally in April, while
refrigerator demand
was down by 10 per cent , as per industry estimates. For beverages, sales were down by 10-15 per cent y-o-y in the East, Northeast and some Southern markets like Karnataka, the executives said.
Industry executives said lower number of heatwave days in the peak summer period of April compared to last year, moderate temperatures in South, East and Northeast, and intermittent rains slowed offtake in these markets.
"AC sales have been down in most geographies in April including parts of North India which were cooler till about 8-10 days," said Pradeep Bakshi, managing director at Tata-owned Voltas.
"Retailers are fully prepared with stock, waiting for peak summer demand to pick up," he said. However, Bakshi, declined to share sales numbers of Voltas due to the silent period before announcement of last quarter results.
As a result, most companies are now postponing the planned 3-4 per cent price hike of ACs from May to ensure the sales buoyancy is not impacted.
Kamal Nandi, head of appliance business at Godrej Enterprises, said even refrigerator sales were down by about 8-10 per cent in April y-o-y due to poor demand in the South. "For AC, only North is firing right now, which is 40 per cent of the national market. Rest are down, pulling down overall growth rates," he said.
While the North is the largest market for most summer products, the contribution of other regions has gone up in the last two years due to prolonged heat waves. Last year, most AC brands were facing a stock out situation by now due to intense demand across the country with sales jumping by a huge 50-55 per cent . This high base effect is also pulling down growth rates this year.
Even beverage companies are impacted, despite the price war in the segment driven by Reliance's Campa cola.
A senior executive at one of India's largest beverage bottling companies said April has been a disappointment in markets like Karnataka, East and North East because of lower temperatures. This is despite sales being ahead of expectations in February and March, he said.
"However, sales in the North have held through this month. With forecasts of a heatwave nationally in May and June, we expect the overall quarter to be much better than last year. We are prepared to meet the expected surge in demand," he said.
April-June is the most crucial period for companies selling summer products as this quarter accounts for 40-70 per cent of their annual sales. Sales of AC and refrigerators in the South declined by 40-50 per cent in April over last year, while East and West were down by about 5 per cent .
Havells India managing director Anil Rai Gupta told analysts last week that there was slower growth in the summer products like AC and fans due to a delay in the onset of peak summer in North and South. "Hopefully, it should pan out well in the next 75 days of the quarter, but it's still to pan out," he said.

Tata Motors has earned the respect of the consumers by offering a wide range of features in its cars, including the electric vehicles. The Tata Harrier EV too is expected to continue with that momentum. It will come with a range of advanced technology-aided features. Apart from a large touchscreen infotainment system with various connectivity features, a fully digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, there would be ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate. Also, there would be an auxiliary display for front passenger, Qi charging, multiple airbags, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS (advance driver assistance systems) suite as well. The latest teaser video from Tata Motors has showcased the EV will come with a feature that will show the underbody terrain using a camera. Further, there will be a rotary dial for selecting different driving modes and one of them is Rock Crawl mode. Tata Harrier EV will be built on the carmaker's new Plus platform, which is more upgraded version of the architecture the Punch EV currently uses. Certain variants of the Tata Harrier EV will be offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, which promises to enhance the appeal of the electric SUV. This will be aligned with Tata Motors' previous announcement that the new electric SUV will be capable of tackling treacherous terrains, which the OEM showcased in its latest teaser video for the Harrier EV as well. While battery capacity details of the Tata Harrier EV are not yet confirmed, early indications suggest the SUV could offer a driving range exceeding 500 kilometres per charge. A more affordable front-wheel-drive variant with a single motor may also be part of the lineup at a later stage. Tata Motors recently released the teaser for the Harrier EV in which the brand showcased the capability of the electric SUV. The challenge for the Harrier EV was to climb up the Elephant Rock located in Kerala. It has an elevation of 3,937 feet with rocky terrain and steep climbs. The Harrier EV was able to climb up the Elephant Rock, which is quite impressive. Tata Harrier EV will have a torque output of 500 Nm. Tata Motors, which previously held two-thirds of India's electric passenger vehicle market, experienced a decline in its market share to 35.4% in May 2025, a decrease of 3,078 basis points compared to the same month in the previous year. The company recorded 4,319 units sold, reflecting a 19% year-on-year decrease, and an 8% drop month-on-month. In the initial two months of FY26, Tata has recorded sales of 9,038 electric vehicles (EVs), representing a 14% decrease year-over-year (YoY) from 10,477 units during the corresponding period last year. The company's flagship models, Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV, continue to enjoy popularity; however, they are encountering mounting competition from newer and more innovative options. The Punch EV contributes significantly to sales volumes, yet the forthcoming introductions of the Harrier and Sierra EV are expected to be pivotal for the current financial year. Tata Motors currently has the largest lineup of electric vehicles in the Indian market. The homegrown manufacturer's EV lineup starts with the Tiago EV which is one of the most affordable EVs in India. Then there is the Tigor EV and Punch EV. Then in the lineup is the Nexon EV, which is one of the most popular EVs in India. Currently, Tata Motors' flagship EV is the Curvv EV. Tata currently has 5 electric cars in its portfolio. Once launched, the Harrier EV will be a direct rival to the Mahindra XEV 9e and Maruti Suzuki eVitara. As of now, the pricing of the Harrier EV is not known but there will be other EVS as well as ICE-powered vehicles against which the Harrier EV will have compete. Tata Motors has been gearing up to launch one of its most-awaited electric SUVs in the Indian passenger vehicle market - the Harrier EV. It was showcased in the country on multiple occasions, the latest being at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 that took place earlier this year in New Delhi. Harrier EV showed there gave us a look at the production-ready electric SUV, detailing the design and features as well. However, with the SUV finally here, it is time to explore this EV that promises a lot. First Published Date: 03 Jun 2025, 08:02 AM IST

Disney to lay off hundreds across entertainment divisions amid shift to streaming

The Walt Disney Company is cutting several hundred jobs across its film and television divisions, a Disney spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY. The layoffs, which formally took effect on Monday, June 2, impact departments involved in marketing, publicity, casting, development, and parts of corporate finance. No entire teams are being dissolved, the company said. A Disney representative attributed the decision to the 'rapid pace' of industry transformation and the company's push to 'operate more efficiently.' This move is the latest in a series of cost-cutting measures implemented since CEO Bob Iger returned to helm the company in 2022. In early 2023, Iger announced that Disney would lay off 7,000 employees to reduce spending by billions of dollars. That plan has since unfolded through multiple rounds of layoffs. In September 2024, Disney cut around 300 positions in corporate functions such as legal, HR, and communications. Earlier layoffs affected Disney-owned brands including National Geographic, Pixar, and Freeform. In March 2025, the company trimmed another 200 jobs—nearly 6% of its workforce in ABC News and Disney Entertainment Networks. Despite the cuts, Disney reported strong financial results. According to its Q2 2025 earnings report, revenue rose to $23.6 billion, a 7% year-on-year increase. Subscriber numbers for Disney+ also climbed by 126 million in the first quarter, reflecting the accelerating shift in consumer preferences toward streaming platforms. As of its latest fiscal year ending September 2024, Disney employed approximately 233,000 people worldwide. Meanwhile, Disney's theme parks are also facing challenges. At Walt Disney World in Florida, employees under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) were recently informed they must provide updated work authorization documents or risk being placed on leave. The notification followed a U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the Trump-era decision to end TPS protections for about 350,000 Venezuelans. India beats China! surpasses Beijing in…, even US was surprised, Pakistan can't even think of it, it is about…

India has overtaken China in iPhone exports. In April 2025, India shipped 3 million iPhones to the US, which is a 76% increase. At the same time shipments from China declined by 76% and reduced their exports to just 900,000 units. The shift started when US President Donald Trump's 30% tariff on goods manufactured in China. It made Chinese production expensive for Apple. India had only a 10% export tariff, and so it became a more favorable destination. Partners like Tata, Foxconn, and Pegatron have made India a manufacturing hub for Apple. India is becoming a big for Apple in their global strategy. Factors like low labor costs and the 'Make in India' initiative have made the country a reliable manufacturing option. Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that, after June 2025, most iPhones sold in the US will come from India. Plants in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are already producing premium models. However, meeting the quarterly demand of 20 million units by 2026 will be a big challenge for India. During 2024-25, India exported a record 11.5 million iPhones out of which 4.4 million units in March alone. These steps were taken by Apple to counter Trump's tariffs. Apple started pre-stocked inventory which also shows the strength of India's manufacturing strategy and infrastructure growth. Although Trump threatened a 25% tariff on iPhones made in India, Apple is still firm on their decision.
