Indonesia defeat Bahrain to reach AFC Women's Futsal knockout stages
Indonesia booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2025 AFC Women's Futsal Asian Cup with a convincing 5-1 win over Bahrain in Group C.
The win sees Indonesia finish third in the group with four points, enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Bahrain, meanwhile, exit the tournament after three consecutive defeats and a goal difference of minus nine.
Indonesia were in control throughout the match, dictating the tempo with quick transitions and superior finishing. It was a final group fixture for both sides, with Bahrain needing a win to have any hopes of progression, but the result was never in doubt.
The 2025 AFC Women's Futsal Asian Cup, running from 6–17 May, serves as the qualification pathway to the inaugural FIFA Women's Futsal World Cup, to be held later this year in the Philippines. Twelve teams are competing, with the top three (plus the hosts) earning World Cup berths.
Bahrain's campaign began with a 4-0 defeat to Thailand, followed by a narrow 3-2 loss to Japan, before another heavy 5-1 defeat to Indonesia sealed their early exit. Indonesia had earlier drawn with Thailand and narrowly lost to Japan, but did just enough to Hessa Ali (right) in action vs Indonesia advance.

Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. Ecuador knew a win would put them on the brink of qualification and there was a packed crowd at the Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro, but the Manchester United midfielder, recalled to the national side by Ancelotti, saw a tame side-footed effort easily dealt with by Valle. Patience While there was no instant impact from Ancelotti, Vinicius, who played under the coach in Madrid, said he needed time to make his impact felt. 'I'm very happy to have Ancelotti here with us, because I've always said he's the best coach I've ever worked with. Having the opportunity to work with him in the Brazilian national team is the best,' the winger told SporTV. 'He hasn't had time to show his work, his game plan, because he's only had two or three days of training,' he added. Atletico Madrid striker Alvarez put Argentina ahead at the Estadio Nacional in the 16th minute with a deft finish after he had been put through by a perfectly weighted pass from Thiago Almada. Lionel Messi came off the bench in the 57th minute but Chile sensed a chance to get something from the game and created more as the game progressed. Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez made a series of crucial saves and Lucas Cepeda went closest with a fierce shot which struck the bar. Cepeda then had the best chance of the game when he was found at the back post but he blasted his volley wide. Messi set up Giuliano Simeone with a chance to make it 2-0 but the son of former Argentina captain and Atletico Madrid coach Diego, fired his shot into the side netting. A header from midfielder Matías Galarza just 13 minutes into the game and a late penalty from Julio Enciso earned Paraguay a crucial victory over a depleted Uruguay.

Hong's side belatedly saw off 10-man Iraq 2-0 in front of a noisy Basra crowd on Thursday to seal an 11th straight World Cup appearance. Substitutes Oh Hyeon-gyu and Kim Jin-kyu scored in the second half to send South Korea through with a game to spare. 'Now that today's match is over and our qualification is confirmed, we will focus everything on the World Cup from this point forward,' Hong told reporters. Australia ready to ‘do a job' in Saudi and qualify for World Cup
AFP | Perth Australia coach Tony Popovic has warned his buoyant team they still 'need to do a job' after propelling themselves to the cusp of a sixth successive World Cup. A last-gasp 1-0 win over already qualified Japan at a soldout Perth Stadium on Thursday put the Socceroos in pole position to finish second in Asian Group C. That would automatically punch their ticket to North America next year. They face Saudi Arabia on Tuesday knowing they only need to avoid defeat by five goals or more in Jeddah. Despite the Saudis only scoring six times in their nine qualifying games so far, Popovic cautioned against complacency. 'We need to do a job in Saudi,' he told reporters. 'We're in a great position but we have to finish it off. 'It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do. 'We're very close now to achieving our goal.' Popovic replaced Graham Arnold in the dugout in September and has rejuvenated the side, with victory on Thursday their first over Japan since 2009. When he took over Australia were fifth in the group and fresh from a disastrous 1-0 loss to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw with Indonesia, with automatic qualification looking unlikely. Popovic admitted his emotions ran high when Aziz Behich hit the 90th-minute winner, and said beating Japan was testament to the work everyone had put in. 'It was a wonderful goal,' he said. 'Although football-wise we need to get better, and we will, in that 90th minute we had six players in the box trying to score a goal. 'The players were moving forward yet they were fatigued and it was a good reward for the group. 'We were tough, kept a clean sheet and have done something (beating Japan) that many Australian sides have tried to do,' he added. 'They (Japan) were on a wonderful run, there's a reason for that, they are the best (in Asia) and we want to challenge them to be the best.'
