Broadway Across Canada unveiled the lineup of offerings for 2025-26 on Wednesday, and it includes the music of Michael Jackson and ABBA as well as the eclectic music mashup from the mind of Baz Luhrmann.

Starting in November comes the Tony Award-winning MJ, centred around the King of Pop's preparations for 1992's Dangerous World Tour. The musical, which premiered on Broadway in 2022, features hits from across Jackson's discography, including Beat It, Bad, Jam and more.

MJ is followed up by Moulin Rouge, based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann fever dream starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. The show is a grand spectacle featuring the excesses of 1899 Paris that pays tribute to beauty, freedom and love. The songs run the gamut from 1930s jazz classics to 2010s dance-pop and everywhere in between.

K-pop stars Jimin and Jung Kook of BTS discharged from military service as band's reunion nears
YEONCHEON, South Korea (AP) — K-pop superstars Jimin and Jung Kook are the latest and final members of BTS to be discharged from South Korea's mandatory military service. The pair wore their military uniforms Wednesday, saluted and addressed fans who had assembled to see the pair after their discharge. They enlisted in December 2023, one day after RM and V did the same. The latter were discharged on Tuesday. They saluted upon their release Tuesday in Chuncheon City as about 200 fans, some of whom traveled from Mexico, Turkey and Brazil, cheered. V thanked fans Tuesday for their patience in waiting for him and RM's return and teased the band's reunion. 'If you can just wait a little bit longer, we will return with a really amazing performance.' The seven singers of the popular K-pop band plan to reunite as a group sometime in 2025 after they finish their service. Six of the group's seven members served in the army, while Suga is fulfilling his duty as a social service agent, an alternative form of military service. He will be discharged later this month. Jin, the oldest member of K-pop supergroup BTS, was discharged in June 2024. J-Hope was discharged in October. In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18-21 months of military service under a conscription system meant to deter aggression from rival North Korea. The law gives special exemptions to athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers if they have obtained top prizes in certain competitions and are assessed to have enhanced national prestige. K-pop stars and other entertainers aren't subject to such privileges. However, in 2020, BTS postponed their service until age 30 after South Korea's National Assembly revised its Military Service Act, allowing K-pop stars to delay their enlistment until age 30. There was heated public debate in 2022 over whether to offer special exemptions of mandatory military service for BTS members, until the group's management agency announced in October 2022 that all seven members would fulfill their duties. ___ Sherman reported from New York.

Teddy Swims was terrified to shift from covers to his own songs
You might know Teddy Swims as the Grammy-nominated artist behind the megahit Lose Control, which was the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2024. Later this month, Swims will release the complete edition of his two-part debut album, I've Tried Everything But Therapy, which has already turned him into a global superstar. But despite his success, Swims hasn't always been confident about writing original music because he got his start performing cover songs on YouTube. On June 25, 2019, he uploaded his first video: a cover of Michael Jackson's Rock with You. "It was 10 years from Michael Jackson's passing," Swims recalls in an interview with Q 's Tom Power. "I was just like, 'Let's just upload it and let's sing it and put it up and see what happens.' And then sure enough, like overnight, it had 10,000 views…. I was in bands at the time, so we were writing all the time … but I didn't expect [cover songs] to be the thing that connected." In October of 2019, he uploaded a tender and powerful cover of You're Still The One by Shania Twain, which went massively viral and ultimately landed him a record deal. Today, the video has more than 200 million views on YouTube. "Me and Luke, my manager, I remember our first trips to L.A. and New York and we're meeting with everyone," Swims tells Power. "We would never take flights or hotel rooms from them … because we wanted to convince them that, 'Oh, we got this amazing YouTube business … so we don't need any of you.' But this whole time, we're going to L.A. and we're sleeping on the floor of Luke's sister's house and we're really roughing it." But he says the transition to writing his own music felt "terrifying" because he was constantly comparing his songs to some of the greatest songs ever written. "It tore me up to be like, 'How the hell am I ever going to write a [ You're ] Still the One?'" The other challenge was that Swims didn't know at first how to write an authentic song that his fans could connect to in the same way as they did with his cover songs. "It turns out when you're trying to write something to be relatable, that is so not the relatable thing," he says. "I find that if you write things so, so super-ly specific about you, that's the most relatable thing — the thing that you think only you are going through, because it turns out everybody's going through the same damn thing." Weinstein's lawyers emphasized that she kept seeing him, accepting invitations and sending warm messages to him. Mann said she 'compartmentalized' the pain he caused her. Weinstein didn't testify during the current trial, but maintained through his attorneys that he had completely consensual encounters with his accusers, who wanted his help building show business careers. Weinstein was one of the movie industry's most powerful figures until a series of sexual misconduct allegations against him became public in 2017, fueling the #MeToo movement and eventually leading to criminal charges. The jury is made up of seven women and five men. Their closed-door discussions began Thursday and apparently have been fractious at times. One juror asked Friday to be excused because he felt one member of the group was being treated unfairly. Then on Monday, the foreperson complained to the judge, prosecutors and defense lawyers that some jurors were 'pushing' others to change their minds, talking about Weinstein's past and going beyond the charges. Trial evidence has included some testimony about allegations outside the scope of the current charges, such as mentions of the groundswell of claims against the ex-studio boss in 2017. Yet another juror soon asked to speak to the court, where she opined that things were 'going well.' By the end of Monday, the jury as a whole said in a note that it was 'making good progress.' There was progress Tuesday on at least one front: Jurors ultimately were given coffee, as requested, Judge Curtis Farber said. He hadn't initially thought the state court system could provide it. Sokola's allegation was added last year, after New York state's highest court overturned the 2020 conviction and sent the case back for retrial.
