Siddaramaiah slams mob attack as SIT continues probe at Dharmasthala
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday assured action in against those responsible for the violence. 'Whoever has committed a crime, action will be taken in accordance with law,' he said.
The incident occurred at Pangal Cross, not far from the home of a college student who was raped and found dead in Dharmasthala in 2012. Four individuals, including a cameraperson and three men associated with YouTube channels, were attacked by a mob while interviewing a local resident in connection with the SIT probe. Police said the situation quickly escalated and the mob started pelting stones, forcing them to intervene with a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Later that night, one of the groups staged a protest outside the Dharmasthala police station, demanding action be taken against those maligning the reputation of the town.
Due to tension over the clash, the SIT didn't conduct any searches on Thursday. The searches are expected to continue after adequate security is deployed, police officers said.
Home minister G Parameshwara acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. 'There seems to be some kind of conflict there. Why is it happening? We don't know,' he said. He added that complaints and counter complaints had been filed and that police had been instructed to investigate the cause of the clashes, identify those responsible and submit a detailed report.
Parameshwara also outlined the scope and progress of the SIT probe. The government had formed the team following public pressure and judicial directions, after a man claiming to be a former sanitation worker alleged that he had been forced to bury multiple bodies—some allegedly showing signs of sexual assault -- between 1995 and 2014 in Dharmasthala. This individual's statement was recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC, lending legal weight to his claims. Based on his inputs, the SIT has identified and carried out exhumations at 13 sites.
'So far, skeletal remains of a male were discovered at the sixth location and it has already been reported in the media. Nothing was found at other locations, except for some remains near a hill. All those remains have been sent to FSL by the SIT,' the home minister said.
Responding to questions about inflammatory comments and misinformation surrounding the case, Parameshwara said, 'What comments others make is not important. What is important is that the SIT has to conduct a probe technically and they are doing their job.'
The Supreme Court will hear a plea challenging a recent order of the Karnataka high court quashing a media gag on reportage surrounding the controversial Dharmasthala mass burial case, on Friday.
The high court on August 1 set aside an earlier gag order by a Bengaluru civil court restraining reportage on the case.
'Around 8,000 YouTube channels are running defamatory material against the Dharmasthala temple,' an advocate submitted before a bench headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai and sought urgent listing of an appeal against the high court order.

Phone tapping: Bandi Sanjay alleges illegal phone surveillance, demands CBI probe
Hyderabad: Union minister of state for home, Bandi Sanjay, on Friday accused the previous BRS govt of unlawfully tapping his phone and those of several political leaders by falsely categorising them as Maoist sympathisers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking after appearing before the special investigation team (SIT), he demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI, arguing that the state agency lacks the jurisdiction for a comprehensive probe. Sanjay also alleged that the current Congress govt is trying to shield former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. "SIT does not have the capacity to summon and investigate central leaders. Sensitive conversations with leaders like Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and BL Santhosh were also tapped," BJP sources said, adding that the party will take legal action. The BJP alleged that the former KCR govt tapped the phones of political figures, film stars, and businessmen under the guise of Maoist surveillance, and misused the data for extortion. It said this calls for involvement, as well as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, given alleged violations of telecom regulations. Questions were also raised over the appointment of T Prabhakar Rao as SIB chief, which BJP leaders said contravened Union home ministry rules. They further alleged that the phone of a high court judge handling a paper leak case was tapped, prompting doubts about the SIT's authority to issue notices to judges. Despite claims that phone tapping orders came from the then DGP, one of the accused P Radha Kishan Rao's arrest was much delayed, sources said. He was later arrested in March 2024 and given bail. BJP leaders alleged that the previous had stored years of intercepted data and destroyed it only after surveys indicated electoral defeat. For these reasons, BJP leaders reiterated their demand for both CBI and ED investigations, saying only central agencies can probe the scale and sensitivity of the surveillance operation.

VHP Demands Careful SIT Probe to Protect Dharmasthala
Bengaluru: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has issued a strong call to the Karnataka state government, urging utmost caution to protect the sanctity of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala and the religious sentiments of Hindus during the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into matters concerning the revered Sri Manjunatha Swamy Temple in Beltangadi taluk, Dakshina Kannada. Emphasising the need for a thorough and transparent investigation, the VHP demands stringent punishment for those found guilty, while stressing that the government must ensure no disrespect is shown to the sacred site. Dharmasthala, a globally renowned spiritual center, attracts millions of devotees annually from across the world, especially from Bengaluru to seek blessings of Sri Manjunatha Swamy. For decades, it has contributed to society through religious programs, education, and free meals. The VHP has condemned what it describes as deliberate misinformation campaigns by vested interests and anti-Hindu forces aiming to tarnish the shrine's dignity. Specifically, the organization referenced the 2012 brutal murder of Sowjanya in the Beltangadi police station limits, reiterating its demand for a comprehensive investigation and expressing support for all unbiased efforts in this regard. The VHP expressed outrage over recent claims by an anonymous individual alleging that hundreds of bodies were buried in Dharmasthala's forests 10-20 years ago, labelling such statements as part of a calculated conspiracy to defame the temple. The organisation warned that certain groups, unaffiliated with Hindu dharma, are spreading false narratives on social media and orchestrating international plots to target Dharmasthala. The VHP insists that the government take immediate legal action against those conspiring against the temple, ensuring that the SIT investigation does not compromise the site's reverence or Hindu beliefs.

UP: Parents assault daughter over desire to study, face legal heat
Etah (UP), Aug 8 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district has lodged a complaint against her parents for allegedly assaulting her when she expressed her desire to continue her studies, police said on Friday. The parents — Digambar Singh and his wife Lata Devi — are now facing legal action under the Juvenile Justice Act's Section 75 (punishment for cruelty to child), they said. According to the police, the incident took place on July 25, and was reported to the Jalesar police station in Etah district on August 5. Citing a complaint filed by Bhavna Singh, a student of Class 10 at Siddhartha Inter College in Jalesar, the police said, on July 25, the girl had asked her parents to register in the school so that she could appear in the examination. Her parents declined her request saying that they do not have the money to educate her. When she insisted on educating herself and her younger brother Ramraj, she was beaten up by her father at the home and later on Agra-Jalesar Road during a journey, the police said. They added that when a passerby, Ankit Pradhan, saw Digambar assaulting the girl, he came to her rescue. Ankit Pradhan took Bhavna, her brother and their mother to a police check post in Jalesar. From there, suddenly Lata Devi disappeared along with her son, and did not return to the police post even after a long-time, the police said. The 14-year-old girl also mentioned in her complaint that her father had dialled 112 and gave false information that Ankit Pradhan had kidnapped his wife, they said. 'The fact is that I myself want to study, and also want to make my younger brother educated," the 14-year-old girl said. 'It is my humble request to the Justice Board that proper arrangements be made for my education and that of my brother. And take appropriate legal action against my father Digambar Singh, who beat me and threw me out of the house and my mother Lata who left me alone," she said in her complaint. A case was registered in Jalesar and the matter has been presented in the Juvenile Justice Protection Board. Despite being summoned several times, the parents did not appear in court. Finally, the court has appointed police station in-charge Sudhir Kumar as the guardian of the girl, they said. Jalesar SHO Sudhir Kumar said that the girl's father is a peon at Siya Devi Degree College and a habitual drinker and quarrelsome person by nature. There has been a dispute between the husband and wife for a long time and at present both live separately. Some time ago, the wife had also filed a case of attempt to murder against the husband. The SHO has taken the responsibility of the girl and has gotten her registered at a school so she can continue her studies and also provided books, uniform and Rs 2,000 cash for any other expenses. SHO Kumar said after a month, when the girl returns from Noida, then efforts will be made to get her enrolled in a good residential school like Kasturba Gandhi or Sainik Vidyalaya so that she can continue her studies even without her parents.
