Karbonn Group managing director Pardeep Jain noted prevailing high level of uncertainty regarding the US market. "Brands have made it clear that if there is no substantial duty difference between India and China, they are unlikely to shift manufacturing to India. Discussions are still continuing," he said.
India and the US are continuing discussions to finalise a
bilateral trade agreement
. The US government had earlier extended a 90-day pause on imposing reciprocal tariffs for most of its trading partners to August 1 from July 9. For India, the US has proposed a 26% tariff.
Live Events
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the deal with India could be soon finalised before reciprocal tariffs come into effect next month.
The US is India's largest trading partner with bilateral trade valued at $131.84 billion in FY25.
The current scenario is also impacting India's long-term export orders for gems and jewellery too, including for the Christmas and year-end shopping period.
"The process of placing orders for Christmas usually begins in June from the JCK Show of jewellery at Las Vegas; first with sample line orders followed by the full orders in September-October," said Sabyasachi Ray, executive director, The
Gems and Jewellery Export
Promotion Council. "This process has been disrupted as US importers are buying only for a short term for each month as there is no clarity on the exact rate of tariff."
US buyers are also doing rate negotiations, said Ray, adding that the buyers are expecting demand to fall if Indian jewellery becomes pricier due to higher tariffs. "Some buyers are negotiating about sharing the burden," he said.
Industry body
Confederation of Indian Textile Industry
(CITI) secretary general Chandrima Chatterjee said there is optimism in the short term that India will secure a good deal, with relative tariffs likely to be largely better than its major competitors.
"However, this optimism may not completely translate into orders in the medium term due to the vague scenario about applicable product specific tariffs that will unfold," she said. "There is cautious optimism. The buyers are holding back on big orders as the sectoral or category-wise tariff rates could vary significantly."
Seafood exporters too are facing slowdown in orders in the past few weeks as buyers are inquiring if the former is ready to absorb the entire burden of any increase in tariff. "There is a slowdown in exports from the past three weeks as new orders are not coming," said Pawan Kumar G, president, Seafood Exporters' Association of India.
Many marine sector exporters are also facing difficulty in obtaining loans as some banks are offering limited financing due to sluggish orders. The companies, which asked not to be named as it may affect their credit ratings, are seeking support from banks and the government to tide over the situation.
The US has imposed a 19% tariff on Indonesia under a new agreement, and 30% on the European Union effective August 1. Trump has sent tariff letters to about two dozen countries including Canada, Japan, and Brazil which specifies tariff rates ranging from 20% to 50% apart from a 50% tariff on copper. He has said for the smaller countries, it is likely to be around 10%.

NMC reinvites ‘Ram Kal Path' bids after lukewarm response
Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday refloated the tender for the 'Ram Kal Path' project inviting tenders from private agencies for the second phase of the work amounting to Rs 74.8 crore, after receiving a lukewarm response to its initial bids. The Ram Kal Path project involves developing a 1.3km stretch from Ramkund to Kalaram Temple and Seetagumpha. After a poor initial response, the civic body has refloated the tender for the Rs 74.8-crore project, hoping for better participation this time. If a contractor is finalised soon, work is expected to begin promptly, given the project's deadline of Sept next year, civic official said. Prashant Pagar, a senior official from the public works department of NMC, said four contractors had filed their bids, but three were disqualified. "Hence, we took the second call for inviting the bids. This time, we are expecting good response from the contractors for the project," he said. The civic officials said various beautification works were to be undertaken under the project to make the entire stretch an attraction for tourists. "Deepstambh, sculptures, fountains, laser shows and wall paintings along the roads, and other beautification works are to be carried out there. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo The entire area is to be revamped from the tourism point of view," another official said. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 99.14 crore, which is to be funded by Centre. So far, NMC has received Rs 65 crore, while the remaining funds are to be disbursed as the work progresses. In the first phase of Rs 22.55 crore, conservation and renovation works will be undertaken of the ancient temples and structures' façade along the Ram Kal Path. NMC has already finalised the contractor for the first phase of the project through the tender process. Simhastha Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years in Nashik when lakhs of sadhus and devotees take a holy dip in the Ramkund during the religious conglomerate. The upcoming Kumbh Mela is slated to be held between 2026 and 2028. Hence, NMC wants to complete the Ram Kal Path project before the Kumbh Mela begins. The flag hoisting of the Kumbh Mela is to be held in Oct next year. In June, the civic body had decided to increase Ram Kal Path's width to 9 metres. In May, NMC had set aside Rs 23 crore on renovating structures' façade along the corridor. In April, NMC sought additional funding for project and also decided to demolish six wadas to pave.

IRDAI warns brokers on deal rush
Mumbai: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has raised concerns over a surge in merger, acquisition, and demerger activities in the insurance distribution space, cautioning brokers against adopting sharp practices to solely inflate their valuations. "We have been witnessing record activity among brokers and other distribution intermediaries," said Satyajit Tripathy, member (distribution), IRDAI, at an Insurance Brokers Association of India event. "While this is fine by all means, I must add a word of caution that with increased growth being seen, we need not be adopting what we call as sharp practices to increase valuation, get listed, and to do business in a way, which may in the long run prove detrimental to the whole ecosystem." The inflow of private equity capital into insurance broking has risen about 20x between 2011-17 and 2018-24 to reach $4.8 billion. Indian insurance broking has 735 licensed brokers of which the top 36 drive over 85% of revenue, implying a long tail of brokers that have not scaled, according to a report by IBAI and acknowledged the significant value addition brought in by brokers to the industry in the last 4-5 years, particularly the event, the government urged over 700 insurance brokers to deepen insurance reach across the country and called on brokers to ensure access to affordable and appropriate insurance solutions for every Indian whether self-employed, salaried, agricultural, or industrial. "There is a vast untapped potential in Type 2 and Type 3 cities, agricultural and rural zones, in unorganised sectors, and among small businesses," said M Nagaraju, secretary, Department of Financial Services. "We believe insurance brokers can possibly increase awareness about the importance and availability of insurance in remote and low-income populations."

India-UK trade pact: Tariff cut may not impact Scotch whisky retail prices
The India-UK free trade agreement (FTA), under which tariffs on whisky and gin have been halved from 150 per cent to 75 per cent, which will further fall to 40 per cent in a decade's time, will not necessarily impact prices of Scotch whisky and gin for Indian consumers. According to a May 2025 report from the International Wine & Spirit Research (IWSR), blended Scotch grew the strongest of all the large whisky categories in India in 2024, with volumes rising by medium single digits and sales more than doubling since 2020. India is known to be a whisky market, with widespread national sales. However, while the data company's forecasts anticipated an upside from the FTA, it added that its impact should not be overestimated. 'While tariffs have been slashed from 150 per cent to 75 per cent, the impact on shelf prices is closer to 10 per cent and it is not a given that this will be passed on to consumers,' it had stated in the 2025 executive summary. The revised tariffs will apply to both bottled-in-origin (BIO) and bulk imports. Industry executives agree, stating that tariffs make up only up to 15 per cent of the final retail price, and with state taxes and costs for distribution and marketing, prices could be down by a mere 10 per cent. This may not be passed on to consumers, they said on the condition of anonymity. A senior commerce ministry official said that a major portion of whisky imports into India are used in the manufacture of blended whisky, whose production is set to rise due to cheaper raw material. 'We are foreseeing significant strategic and cost advantages from this development. We have estimated our Scotch requirements at over ₹250 crore in 2025-26 (FY26), and this treaty represents a substantial opportunity for value creation,' said Abhishek Khaitan, managing director at Radico Khaitan, one of the largest importers of Scotch whisky. Some liquor players also believe that the FTA will help consumers have access to premium Scotch whisky at reduced prices. 'The UK FTA is a positive move for the Scotch whisky segment, and it will enhance accessibility and affordability for Indian consumers. For import-driven portfolios like ours, this could fast-track category adoption, bring price parity closer to Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and enable deeper reinvestment into consumer-building efforts,' said Debashish Shyam, cofounder and director, Ardent Alcobev, which sells Dram Bell blended Scotch whisky. However, the real benefit, Shyam added, will depend on how quickly the duty reductions are implemented, and whether the states align their tax structures accordingly. Spirits made up 51.2 per cent of the total beverage alcohol market in 2024, dominated by whisky. According to the data company, India consumed 258,750 under-9-litre cases of whisky in 2024, which is set to witness a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1 per cent from 2024 to 2029. These included 8,509.60 cases of Scotch whisky, the company stated, adding that India is set to become the biggest Scotch market in the world by 2027.
