Shastrinagar flyover work yet to begin eight months after work order

The construction of the 'Y-shaped' flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk has hit delay, with the traffic diversion plan still awaiting final approval. Despite the work order issued over eight months ago, construction is yet to begin. Preliminary work like soil testing and traffic surveys began in August 2024 and the work order was issued in October.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) senior engineer said, 'We are waiting for the final traffic diversion plan. The palkhi procession and traffic pressure made it difficult to begin work now.'
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Amol Zende said, 'We have not approved the diversion plan or issued the no objection certificate (NoC). This is a critical junction, and due to the monsoon, work cannot begin. We are planning a diversion plan.'
The project, planned four years ago, had to be redesigned due to changes on the ground. Initially, road widening was required because of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) lane. But after the Ahmednagar Road BRT was dismantled, PMC got 7 metres of space, and widening was no longer needed.
'We got the work order in October last year but couldn't start work due to the traffic department's delay in giving the NoC. We plan to begin work by the end of this month,' said Shrikant Gaikwad, executive engineer, PMC.
'To reduce congestion, we will first build the grade separator. Traffic will be diverted from Shastrinagar to Golf Course Road via Karne Road near Don Bosco School. We've also cleared roadside encroachments and widened the road,' he said.
The project also required clearance from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as it is near the historic Aga Khan Palace. PMC gave a presentation to the National Monuments Authority in April 2024. Both central and state archaeology departments later approved the project.

Ashoka's 2,281-year-old edict in Bihar still under shared custody after 108 years

More than a century after Emperor Ashoka's Minor Rock Edict on Chandan Sahid Hill in Bihar's Rohtas district was declared a protected monument, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) still does not have full possession of the replies accessed by India Today in March 2023 and August 2025 reveal that, despite being declared protected on December 1, 1917, the 2,281-year-old inscription remains under shared custody between the ASI and local Muslim ASI confirmed in its RTI response: "Ashoka's inscription on the Chandan Sahid Hill, District Rohtas, was declared a protected monumentvide notification no. 1814 E, dated 01.12.1917." Yet, even today, the agency acknowledges that it is only a partial custodian, compelled to share inscription, dating back to 257 BCE in Ashoka's 13th regnal year, consists of eight lines in archaic Brahmi script, though a portion is ASI described it as a priceless record of India's ancient past, noting that it "probably contains a date referring to the death of Buddha; but no convincing interpretation of it has yet been found."Religious appropriation of the site, however, predates official protection. The Bihar and Orissa District Gazetteer, Shahabad (1924) recorded that local Muslims revered the cave as "Chiragdan" or the "Lamp of Saint Chandan Pir", after the dargah on the ASI reiterated in its RTI reply that "the hill where the inscription is found appears to have been appropriated later on by the Mohammedans".In November 2022, after decades of negotiations, the Mazar Committee formally handed over one key of the locked cave to the ASI's Sasaram the arrangement of dual control continues. The 2025 RTI response confirmed: "The keys of the entry gate of CPM 'Ashokan inscription at Chandan Sahid hill' are in the possession of two institutions, one with the ASI, and another with Mr. G.M. Ansari of the Sher Shah Suri Trust, Sasaram."Speaking to India Today, GM Ansari of the Mazar Committee said, "Whenever tourists come, we cooperate and open the gate. But this is also the shrine of Chandan Pir Baba, since the time of Bakhtiyar Khilji. That is why the hill is known as Chandan Pir Hill."He added that while the Committee facilitates entry, "since the time of Bakhtiyar Khilji, the shrine of Rehmatullah Aaleh Chandan Pir Baba has stood here," tying the site to centuries of religious also claimed that day-to-day upkeep largely falls to the Mazar Committee and local administration, alleging that ASI staff "do nothing" on the only we had the key. Later, after pressure, one key was given to the ASI. Now, tourists can see the site through either of us," he said, adding that records show ASI guards were appointed as far back as 1960 but "rarely seen" until after District Tourism Officer Vinay Pratap, however, maintained that responsibility lies with the ASI: "The protection and management of Ashoka's inscription rests with ASI. Two staff are posted here to show the monument to visitors and coordinate with researchers."Preservation also remains in limbo. In 2023, the ASI's Patna Circle and Science Branch found lime plaster damage and planned in its 2025 reply, the Circle admitted: "Damage assessment records are not available with this Circle. The same are maintained separately by the Science Branch."The ASI insists the site is open to the public, but entry depends on the dual-key arrangement, requiring cooperation from both sides. Visitors, researchers, and pilgrims alike remain reliant on whether the ASI or the Mazar Committee unlocks the gate.- Ends

Stray dog problem continues in city as citizens complain about dog bite instances despite rise in sterilisation

1 2 Pune: Stray dog problem continues in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, with citizens complaining of dog bite cases despite municipal corporations' claims of an increase in sterilisation over the past few years. Those commuting on city streets on bikes, especially at night, face significant dangers of being chased or attacked by stray dogs. Morning walkers and runners have also said that they are often the target of stray dogs. According to data from PMC and PCMC, dog bite cases went up in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Cantonment limits in the past few years. In PMC limits, the cases increased from 16,500 in 2022 to 25,800 in 2024, while in PCMC, dog bite cases jumped to 28,999 in 2024-25 from 13,892 cases in 2021-22. Vikram Patil, a resident of Sinhagad Road, said he recently suffered injuries in his legs and hands after falling of his bike when some stray dogs chased him. There is a need to shift stray dogs to safer places, especially because their presence on streets is not safe, he said. Shweta Mahajan, a resident of Dhankawadi, questioned the effectiveness of animal birth control programmes as cases of dog bites are on the rise. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A fresh order by the Supreme Court on shifting stray dogs from residential areas in Delhi can also be implemented in other cities, she said. Efforts are underway to keep stray dogs away from the airport area and runway. A series of inspections were carried out in the last two months around the airport area, prompting concentrated efforts by PMC, the Airports Authority of India, and defence authorities to overcome the menace. Several residents, including serving army officers and personnel from defence establishments, have expressed concern about the increasing number of stray dogs in and around the military and residential areas of the Pune Cantonment Board. The Dakshin Maharashtra and Goa Sub Area, which is the Local Military Authority (LMA), has recorded over 1,000 dog bite cases involving school children, family members of military personnel, and senior citizens in the last few months. Tushar Mehendale, a resident of Shivajinagar, said that the civic administration needs to take up the issue on priority. The authorities, along with experts, should check if dog feeding in open areas or in public places was aggravating the issue of attacks by stray dogs. Dedicated shelters should be established to overcome the menace before the situation turns critical. PMC officials said it had increased sterilisation from 13,148 in 2021-22 to 57,800 in 2023-24, while in PCMC, 3,300 cases of sterilisation were reported in 2024-25. Officials from PMC said that sterilisation has led to a drop in the number of stray dogs. The administration has taken measures to control the stray dog population and their vaccination. Regarding the rise in dog bite cases, officials said that even a scratch by a stray dog is reported as a dog bite, hence the numbers are high. In PCMC limits, between April and June 2025, 8,335 incidents of dog bites were reported. Activists and citizens attributed the surge partly to a slowdown in sterilisation after PCMC's contract with a private NGO expired in Dec last year. With no dedicated staffers, sterilisation activities were stalled until July 2025. "Earlier this month, we appointed 16 contractual staffers, including dog catchers and two veterinary doctors, tasked with sterilising 20 dogs per day," a senior PCMC official said. The civic body has also initiated the recruitment process for 15 additional staffers to raise the target to 40 sterilised dogs per day. Deputy municipal commissioner and head of PCMC's veterinary department, Sandeep Khot, said that under a special drive, over 16,000 dogs have been vaccinated against rabies in the past three years, and efforts are being scaled up. Vitthal Baral, a resident of Yashone Infinitee Housing Society in Punawale, said the civic body and the state govt should enforce the Supreme Court's stray dog management guidelines issued for Delhi NCR, in Pimpri Chinchwad as well. "In and around our society, stray dogs are everywhere, and we are even afraid to let our children play outside. Just last month, a dog became aggressive after delivering puppies near our premises. We have reported the matter to PCMC multiple times, but no one has come to address the problem," he said. A citizens' group, Pune Platform for Collaborative Response (PPCR), has written to civic chief Naval Kishore Ram to initiate a city-wide programme to manage stray dogs more effectively by formulating and implementing a comprehensive stray dog control programme, aligned with established judicial guidelines. Residents voice concern after sighting of wild boar at Taljai Hill

1 2 Pune: Residents living in the vicinity of Taljai Hill near Sahakarnagar have voiced concern over the sighting of a wild boar in the area on Monday morning. They have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) authorities to check whether there are other wild boars on the hill. "Many morning walkers visit the hill daily and wild boars can cause harm to the visitors. Attacks on people cannot be ruled out," said Nitin Kadam, a local activist. The PMC official said they would visit the site and take necessary measures in association with the forest department. Around 650 acres of the hill are under the jurisdiction of the forest department and 400 acres under PMC. A fire had broken out on the hill in Feb this year. Amey Godse, an environment lover, said, "Though the forest is a natural habitat for the boar, it is surprising to see it in Taljai. The animal is very aggressive and the possibility of it attacking humans cannot be ruled out. So, if a wild boar was found at Taljai, the morning walkers should be more vigilant." "It is a good sign that the boar was seen. Citizens as well as the authorities should create more awareness about the presence of the animal," said Sanjay Athavale, an environment lover. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo Residents said citizens from Sahakarnagar, Satara Road, and even from Wadgaon areas visit Taljai Hill daily.
