Deutsche Bank, SeaTown join VinFast's US$510 million private debt: sources

Business Times9 hours ago
[SINGAPORE] Deutsche Bank and SeaTown Holdings International are among the lenders providing a US$510 million private credit loan to VinFast Auto, according to people familiar with the matter.
The facility for VinFast, an electric vehicle maker owned by Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, pays high-single digit returns, the people said, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. Jefferies Financial Group was the sole financial adviser for VinFast and Vingroup for the deal, according to a LinkedIn announcement.
A Vingroup representative confirmed the fundraising, saying it helps support VinFast's business operations. 'The loan has been secured on favourable commercial terms, given the current market conditions,' the representative said, without elaborating on the details of the deal. Meanwhile, spokespeople for Deutsche Bank and SeaTown declined to comment.
VinFast has been tapping the loan market to fund its expansion plans regionally as it looks to compete with other global EV makers. The sector has become highly competitive with deep price cuts that are eating into earnings.
Vingroup founder and chairman, Pham Nhat Vuong, who's also VinFast's chief executive officer, said last year that the company will continue to have his support until he runs 'out of money', Bloomberg News reported.
VinFast is in talks with local Indian lenders for a US$200 million loan, as it looks to expand in the world's third-biggest car market, Bloomberg News reported. It also secured a 1.84 trillion rupiah (S$145 million) syndicated facility in April from Bank Negara Indonesia and Maybank Indonesia to fund its factory development in Indonesia's West Java province. India lead England by 244 runs in Edgbaston test after Smith's 184

After England's horror start saw them slump to 84-5, Smith and Harry Brook transformed the innings in a masterclass of counter-attacking cricket as both smashed centuries in a crucial sixth-wicket partnership worth a precious 303 runs. But England's remarkable fightback ended in spectacular fashion when their last five wickets tumbled for just 20 runs after the new ball breathed life into the Indian fast bowlers. "Up until I got out I felt like we were almost clawing it back but our tail had a collapse, as we saw with them," Brook, who scored 158, told Sky Sports. "It was good to spend some time out there with Smudge (Smith), he's got a long career ahead with England and he's a phenomenal player." Racing along at nearly seven runs an over under floodlights, India's openers had brought up their 50-run partnership in no time before Josh Tongue struck to trap Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw, sparking immediate controversy. Jaiswal conferred with opening partner KL Rahul whether to review the decision and when he finally did, England skipper Ben Stokes argued that the timer had already run down as the crowd booed. Rahul (28) and Nair (seven) were at the crease at the end of day's play, with a light drizzle threatening to spoil the party over the weekend with the match delicately poised. ENGLAND COLLAPSE In the first innings, Brook's heroic innings came to an end when Akash Deep (4-88) had him bowled off a delivery that jagged back and hit the top of off stump. Brook, who had been struggling with cramp after tea, walked off to the sound of the Edgbaston crowd singing his name. The collapse rapidly gathered pace as Deep struck again when Chris Woakes edged to the slips where Nair took another smart catch. Mohammed Siraj then completed a devastating spell by trapping both Brydon Carse and Tongue lbw for ducks to complete a five-wicket haul. Last man Shoaib Bashir was welcomed with a bouncer to the helmet from Siraj, which required England to assess him due to the concussion protocol, but he was bowled off the next delivery. As Siraj finished with figures of 6-70, Smith was left stranded on 184, a magnificent performance overshadowed by the team's stunning capitulation that saw six England batters departing for ducks. PERSONAL PLAYGROUND Earlier, Smith and Brook had turned Edgbaston into their personal playground as their partnership crushed the India bowling attack's spirit. Brook had endured a heartbreaking dismissal on 99 in the first test victory at Headingley, but this time there was no stopping him as he and Smith looked completely at ease in building their stand. "We didn't speak too much. Everyone knows that we're quite positive players and would look to take the bowlers on. That ebbed and flowed throughout our innings," Brook said. "He obviously came out of the blocks quick, as I did the night before. It was just about deciding when to go." The 26-year-old Brook brought up his ninth test century in the second session with a boundary, raising his bat and helmet to the crowd before pointing his bat at the heavens, dedicating his hundred to his late grandmother Pauline who died in March. It was a long toil in the sun for India, who had started the day perfectly when Siraj dismissed Joe Root and Stokes in consecutive deliveries in the day's second over. Stokes's golden duck, his first in 200 test innings, meant three of England's top six were dismissed without scoring, following Ben Duckett's and Ollie Pope's ducks off consecutive deliveries from Deep late on day two. Hamilton top in first practice at Silverstone, Norris second

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox SILVERSTONE, England - Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton raised hopes of more British Grand Prix heroics with the fastest lap in first practice on Friday while 17-year-old Arvid Lindblad looked strong in his debut session for Red Bull. Hamilton, 40 and on a career low run of 13 races without a podium finish but a record nine-times home race winner, lapped a sunny Silverstone with a best effort of one minute 26.892 seconds on a bright but gusty afternoon. It was the first time this season the seven-times world champion has led a practice session, although he was fastest in Chinese sprint qualifying. McLaren's Lando Norris, favourite for his first home triumph on Sunday after winning in Austria last weekend, was 0.023 slower but ahead of championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in third and 0.150 off the pace. Piastri leads Norris by 15 points after 11 of 24 races with Silverstone marking the season's midpoint. Champions McLaren have a dominant 207 points advantage over Ferrari in the constructors' standings. Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth with Mercedes's George Russell fifth. It was Hamilton's first time at a grand prix on home soil in Ferrari's red colours. The team have yet to win this season, the only top four outfit yet to do so. Top stories Swipe. Select. Red Bull had to seek special dispensation from the governing FIA for the Anglo-Swedish driver with Indian heritage to be allowed to drive while under the age limit of 18, and team boss Christian Horner was pleased with what he saw. "I thought he acquitted himself very well, his feedback was clear and concise," he said of the Formula Two driver tipped for an eventual seat at Racing Bulls. "He's definitely a prospect for the future." Only one other driver had debuted so young at a grand prix weekend and that was Verstappen in Japanese Grand Prix practice in 2014, three days after his 17th birthday. Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto spun his Sauber full circle at speed but without mishap. Estonian Paul Aron lapped for Sauber, replacing Nico Hulkenberg for the session, and was 17th. Fans again turned out in force, after 60,000 on Thursday. The four day attendance is expected to be a record half a million people. REUTERS

India proposes retaliatory duties at WTO against US tariffs on autos

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox New Delhi has proposed retaliatory duties against the US at the World Trade Organisation. New Delhi has proposed retaliatory duties against the US at the World Trade Organisation, saying Washington's 25 per cent tariff on automobiles and some auto parts would affect US$2.89 billion (S$3.68 billion) of India's exports, according to an official notification. 'India reserves the right to suspend concessions or other obligations ... that are substantially equivalent to the adverse effects of the measure to India's trade,' the statement said. According to the notification, the duty collected by the US would amount to US$725 million and New Delhi will impose an 'equivalent amount of duty collected from products originating in the United States'. India did not specify the tariff rate or which goods it would levy duties on. India is trying to clinch a trade deal with Washington before a July 9 deadline set by US President Donald Trump, after which he has threatened to impose a 26 per cent tariff on all imported Indian goods. India has signalled it is ready to slash its high tariff rates for the US but has not conceded on Washington's demands for opening up the agriculture and dairy sectors. REUTERS
