Steelers Tabbed for 'Tomlin Pick' at Quarterback
Even if the Pittsburgh Steelers are able to sign Aaron Rodgers to be their starting quarterback in 2025, the team will need to address who will be under center when he retires.
During an appearance on ESPN's "Unsportsmanlike" on Tuesday, former New York Giants defensive end Chris Canty predicted that the Steelers will take Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the 2025 NFL Draft.

"Doesn't that fit Mike Tomlin's style of play? We're gonna run the football. We're gonna lean on this big, physical offensive line. They've invested a lot of draft capital in the last two years on that group," Canty said.
"It feels like the Steelers' brand of football, by rolling with a quarterback like Jalen Milroe, not just how Milroe plays but in terms of what they want their overall identity to be."
Milroe was one of the most athletic quarterbacks in all of college football this past season, and Canty thinks that could fit the Steelers' plan perfectly. Pittsburgh weaponized Justin Fields for parts of 2024 to modest success, and could do more with Milroe's quick-twitch athleticism.
The Alabama quarterback finished the 2024 season with 2,844 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. But his calling card was in the run game, where he racked up 726 yards and 20 touchdowns using his legs.

Rodgers has not yet made a decision, so Pittsburgh's current starting QB is Mason Rudolph, but he has proven in the past that he can get the job done. If the Steelers decide they want to draft their quarterback of the future in this year's draft, taking a chance on Milroe could be a very intriguing option.

Aaron Rodgers signing: Are the Steelers better with the 41-year-old as their QB? Opinion
Aaron Rodgers signing: Are the Steelers better with the 41-year-old as their QB? Opinion Show Caption Hide Caption Former NFL QB Alex Smith weighs in on the Aaron Rodgers situation Alex Smith explains why Aaron Rodgers should return for at least one more year. Sports Seriously It's about time. Aaron Rodgers inevitably agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers following a long, drawn-out saga. The Steelers almost appeared desperate as they waited an inordinate amount of time as the quarterback carousel churned, leaving Pittsburgh as the only viable option. When Mason Rudolph was quarterback No. 1 on the depth chart, maybe desperation was warranted. 'There is no drop-dead date specifically in my mind, no,' Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters at the NFL owners meeting. Rodgers will reportedly fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign before the Steelers begin mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. I'm not sure we can call Rodgers' pursuit a sweepstakes. Rodgers was the last big-name quarterback domino to fall. The 2025 NFL Draft came and went. The Steelers passed on multiple rookie quarterbacks, including Shedeur Sanders, before settling on Will Howard in the sixth round. But are the Steelery a better team with a 41-year-old Rodgers, who will turn 42 in December? Rodgers completed 63% of his passes, averaged 229 passing yards per game and had a 90.5 passer rating in his final season with the New York Jets. His statistics are comparable to Russell Wilson's 63.7% completion percentage, 225 passing yards per game and 95.6 passer rating in one year in the Steel City. Furthermore, there's also the factor that Wilson had a 6-5 regular season record as a Steelers starter and helped lead the club into the playoffs. Compared to Rodgers, who went 5-12 as a starter in a disastrous year in the Big Apple. Still, the Steelers were comfortable letting Wilson walk in free agency as they awaited Rodgers' decision. All the while, Rodgers' former team replaced him with former Steelers backup quarterback Justin Fields. Ditch the quarterback carousel. It's quarterback musical chairs. STEELERS SCHEDULE: Aaron Rodgers set to face Jets, Packers in 2025 The acquisition of Rodgers doesn't make the Steelers better if he performs at a level similar to last year. Father Time tells us we should anticipate a decline in his performance. He completed just 45% of his passes when under pressure and was held to a 62% completion rate when blitzed last season, according to Pro Football Focus. His low completion percentage under duress can be attributed to decreased mobility commonly associated with advancing age in athletes, in addition to his Achilles injury, which limited Rodgers to only four snaps in 2023. Rodgers did perform better during his final five games in New York. The five-game stretch included his only 300-yard passing effort, nine touchdowns to just three interceptions and a 91-or-above passer rating in four of the contests. However, the Jets lost three of their final five games. The 41-year-old quarterback showed he can still play in the NFL, but does he make the Steelers any better than the back-to-back AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens? Or a Cincinnati Bengals club that should be improved in the aftermath of a disappointing 2024? Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow haven't even hit the age of 30 yet. This year will reveal whether the Steelers mismanaged the draft by not prioritizing the quarterback position. Pittsburgh hasn't rostered a franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season. The version of Rodgers the Steelers are getting will likely serve as a bridge quarterback. While Rodgers might help keep Mike Tomlin's streak of consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a coaching career intact, he is not the long-term solution at quarterback. In fact, he may not even be an improvement over the two quarterbacks Pittsburgh had last season. Follow USA TODAY Sports' Tyler Dragon on X @TheTylerDragon.

Aaron Rodgers odds: How will the four-time MVP fare in Pittsburgh?
We don't know how long Aaron Rodgers will spend in Pittsburgh, but we know he's there for at least next season. It was reported Thursday that the 41-year-old, four-time MVP will travel to Pittsburgh and sign with the franchise on Friday, putting an end to a long waiting game between the two sides. Now, it's all about football. Let's check out the odds for Rodgers and the Steelers heading into next season at DraftKings Sportsbook as of June 5. Aaron Rodgers total passing yards Over 3300.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total) Under 3300.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total) Aaron Rodgers passing touchdowns Over 23.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total) Under 23.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total) Aaron Rodgers to win MVP: +5000 (bet $10 to win $510 total) Steelers to win Super Bowl: +4000 (bet $10 to win $410 total) Steelers to win AFC: +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) Steelers to win AFC North: +550 (bet $10 to win $65 total) Steelers to make playoffs: +145 (bet $10 to win $24.50 total) Steelers to miss playoffs: -175 (bet $10 to win $15.71 total) The Steelers' Super Bowl odds didn't budge after Thursday's news regarding Rodgers, possibly because sportsbooks have seen this move coming for what seems like forever. Rodgers spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets, but only played last season, after suffering a torn Achilles in Week 1 of the 2023-24 season. Despite the Jets' 5-12 record, Rodgers put up a respectable 3,897 passing yards and 28 TDs. He threw 11 picks on the season, tied for the third-most in a season during his 20-year career. Rodgers now joins a Steelers squad that has made the postseason in four of the last five seasons, but hasn't won a playoff game since 2016. As a four-time MVP, 10-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro selection, individually, Rodgers is one of the most accomplished QBs in NFL history. However, he has only won one Super Bowl during his illustrious career. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Don't expect Aaron Rodgers to wear Terry Bradhaw's No. 12
Social media has exploded on Thursday with (among other things) images of Aaron Rodgers in a Steelers uniform and a No. 12 jersey. Don't expect that to happen. While Terry Bradshaw's No. 12 isn't officially retired, it's unofficially retired. And the Steelers surely wouldn't issue it to Rodgers without Bradshaw's blessing. Then there's the question of whether Rodgers would even want to wear No. 12. Two years ago, former Jets quarterback Joe Namath was willing to let Rodgers wear No. 12 in New York. Rodgers declined. Just last week, Bradshaw dubbed the prospect of the Steelers signing Rodgers 'a joke.' He added this: 'That guy needs to stay in California. Go somewhere and chew on bark and whisper to the gods out there.' So, no, Bradshaw won't be thrilled about Rodgers wearing No. 12. And Rodgers surely won't want to wear Bradshaw's number. The more likely choice is the number Rodgers wore at Cal and with the Jets — No. 8. It's currently issued to punter Corliss Waitman. Which means that Rodgers will have it if he wants it.
