Former Joe Flacco Teammate Blasts Browns Veteran Over QB Situation
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. As the Cleveland Browns get ready for the start of the NFL season, one of the biggest question marks comes from the quarterback position. Cleveland has multiple guys vying for the starting job, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett leading the way. More NFL news: Cowboys' Dak Prescott Makes Big Announcement Ahead of NFL Season Rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders will also look to make an impact. Some have wondered if Flacco would be a mentor to the rookies due to his experience in the league. However, Flacco recently came under some hot water for comments about mentoring the younger guys in the quarterback room. "It's a good question to bait somebody into answering, and no matter how they answer it, it kind of makes the guy that's answering it look bad," Flacco said. "If I say, 'I don't want to be a mentor,' I look bad. If I say, 'I do want to be a mentor,' then I look like an idiot that doesn't care about being good and playing football." In response to this mindset from the veteran signal-caller, a former teammate of Flacco, Chris Canty, blasted the quarterback. Canty called out Flacco for being a bad teammate. "Mentoring a young player is only going to make that player better, which makes the team better," Canty said Friday on ESPN's "Unsportsmanlike." "You're only as strong as your weakest link. The whole point of the exercise is that everybody makes everyone better. That's why you practice. You're making each other better. It's what you're supposed to do. You do that with the reps on the practice field, but you also do that by sharing points and notes in the film room. "It's a ridiculous answer from Joe Flacco," Canty continued. "There's no guarantee Joe Flacco is going to be healthy for 17 games, especially at 40 years old." The Browns can clinch a playoff spot in Week 17. More/Getty Images Flacco will try to become the starter for Cleveland, but there is no guarantee for anything. Many believe that Pickett has the inside track to landing the starting job, which would put Flacco as the backup. More NFL news: Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Facing Brutal Reality to Start Rookie Season Last year with the Colts, Flacco appeared in eight games, throwing for 1,761 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Flacco has shown his worth over the years, but Pickett may be better for the Browns to see if he could be the future of the team. Cleveland is coming off a very poor year that saw them end the season with a record of 3-14. The Browns will look to get back to the postseason, but it seems that drama is already brewing within the quarterback room. Is Shedeur Sanders the next Browns starter? Chris Canty believes former Colorado star is already 'leader in the clubhouse'
Shedeur Sanders impressed at Browns rookie minicamp, with Super Bowl champ Chris Canty labeling him the 'leader in the clubhouse' early on. (browns/X0 Shedeur Sanders might have entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick in the 2025 Draft, but he's quickly proving that draft position doesn't define potential—or leadership. While many expected Dillon Gabriel, taken two rounds earlier, to draw most of the early spotlight, it's Sanders who's quietly making waves inside the Cleveland Browns' quarterback room. NFL champion sees Shedeur Sanders as early Browns frontrunner From the moment rookie minicamp wrapped up, a buzz began building around Sanders' presence and poise. ESPN's Chris Canty, a Super Bowl champion turned analyst, spoke about it on Unsportsmanlike, pointing out how players are responding to the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback. 'I'm going with whoever my locker room responds to the most,' Canty said. 'Just based on how the rookies reacted to him coming off of rookie minicamp. Based on what we've been hearing in terms of his interactions with veterans around the building, the coaching staff, it feels like people are gravitating toward Shedeur Sanders.' That gravitation seems genuine. Sanders has already started forming meaningful bonds within the team, including a noticeable connection with rookie running back Quinshon Judkins. Their camaraderie has surfaced on social media, offering fans a glimpse into a budding off-field friendship that could translate into real on-field synergy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo How Shedeur Sanders becomes Cleveland Browns starting QB | THE HERD w/ Colin Cowherd & Drew Bledsoe Even more telling was a group photo from day one of rookie minicamp, where several teammates threw up 'The Shedeur' gesture—a celebration Sanders popularized. Interestingly, Sanders himself chose not to flash it in that moment, perhaps a quiet nod to the humility and team-first mindset he's adopting as he finds his footing in Cleveland. Sanders doesn't just bring talent; he brings an infectious calmness and charisma. His natural ease with the media and in public appearances has drawn comparisons to veteran quarterbacks. At the recent NFLPA Rookie Premiere, he was all smiles, even joking about sharing a room with Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco. 'It's just so funny. We're on the same team,' Sanders said. 'People try to put us against each other, but inside the room, we know we are one.' In a league where rookies often tread lightly, Sanders seems to be walking with a quiet confidence—likely inherited from his father, NFL Hall of Famer and current Colorado coach Deion Sanders. Canty agrees. 'Shedeur Sanders is the leader in the clubhouse because he's comfortable in that environment—because he's been around the NFL all his life. His dad is Deion Sanders.' The Browns' quarterback competition is anything but light. Sanders is up against the likes of Flacco, Gabriel, Kenny Pickett, and possibly even Deshaun Watson if he returns healthy. Still, early impressions suggest Sanders isn't intimidated. Instead, he's leaning into the challenge—earning trust, building chemistry, and making it impossible for coaches and teammates to overlook him. While the official starter remains unnamed, one thing's clear: Shedeur Sanders is not here just to take part. If this momentum continues, the Browns might find themselves turning to a rookie not just for potential—but for leadership and results. ESPN insider suggests massive NFL Draft change before Arch Manning becomes eligible
Arch Manning's junior season at Texas will be under a heavy spotlight this upcoming college football season, and many believe he's the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and become the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. It's not a certainty Manning will decide to go pro next year, but he does have the option to do so being three years removed from high school. If he does, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter says the league should borrow from the NBA and host a draft lottery. The NBA's draft lottery is designed so teams can't tank a season for the first overall selection in the following year's draft. Though there was debate Monday about the Dallas Mavericks being awarded the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, they had just a 1.8% chance of getting the pick. Granted, NBA teams still try to lose to increase their percentage of winning the first pick in the lottery. But the process still works, and Schefter agrees with the NBA's decision not to incentivize losing altogether. "The more I think about it, the more I think the NFL should be in that business," Schefter said on ESPN Radio's "Unsportsmanlike." "They don't want teams to tank. They don't want teams to lose. We had a couple situations last year where, in the last game of the year, the [New England] Patriots are putting in Joe Milton. I'm not telling you they're trying to lose, but they certainly don't want to win." Milton did lead the Patriots over the Bills in Week 18, 23-16, but Buffalo sat most of its starters for the playoffs. Still, Schefter's idea is one that might catch on. "If nothing else, if the NFL were able to implement a lottery system, they'd have one more night of ratings," Schefter said. "They're doing shows for everything else. Why would there not be a draft lottery show? That would rate huge. Could you imagine a year where there is a top quarterback prospect or the year Arch Manning comes out? They put that in primetime, a half-hour special primetime NFL Draft Lottery. Come on, it's a home run." With Quinn Ewers drafted by the Miami Dolphins, Manning is the presumptive starter for the Longhorns for the 2025-26 college season. He has flashed his talent in games Ewers was hurt or Texas was up big, but he's never had to lead the team through a full season. Manning hasn't hinted one way or another regarding his draft status for 2026.. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Steelers Get Bad News On Rodgers Signing via Schefter
The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to play the quarterback waiting game with Aaron Rodgers, only now, they have an ace up their sleeve ... kind of. The Steelers and general manager Omar Khan selected Ohio State quarterback Will Howard in the sixth round, and haven't made any moves for another quarterback this offseason other than bringing in Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. Advertisement Is Howard the Steelers' new ace up their proverbial sleeve? Those moves, or lack thereof, would indicate Khan feels pretty strongly that at some point, Rodgers is signing. Yet, here we are. NFL insider Adam Schefter has been personally invested in the Rodgers offseason saga, and said on the "Unsportsmanlike" podcast he thinks Rodgers will make his decision known before Pittsburgh's mandatory minicamp, which runs June 10-12. "I think the Steelers' mandatory minicamp is next month," Schefter said. "Forget the exact date, roughly June 10. I would think that we would get a decision from Aaron Rodgers shortly before then about whether or not he should play. To me, you can't miss that mandatory minicamp where you start gearing up. I guess you can, but that's not ideal." Advertisement That seems like odd timing, since Rodgers has made a career out of skipping out on "mandatory" minicamps, including bolting for Egypt last offseason during the New York Jets' mandatory minicamp. Additionally ... Not March. Not April. Not May. June? That is bad news for a team trying to become ... well ... a team. Even Steelers ownership is still in the dark, although Art Rooney II said during the NFL Draft that he still feels good about Rodgers joining the team eventually. "We're still kind of getting the same signals we've been getting recently that he does want to come here," Rooney said. "I do think we may get word soon, obviously, with things starting to crank up here with the offseason program, etc. If he's coming, I would like to get him here soon for some of that." Advertisement "Soon'' has suddenly taken on a new and sad meaning in The Steel City. As we've gotten used to writing at the end of every Rodgers-based piece in Pittsburgh, "we'll wait and see." Steelers Tabbed for 'Tomlin Pick' at Quarterback
Even if the Pittsburgh Steelers are able to sign Aaron Rodgers to be their starting quarterback in 2025, the team will need to address who will be under center when he retires. During an appearance on ESPN's "Unsportsmanlike" on Tuesday, former New York Giants defensive end Chris Canty predicted that the Steelers will take Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the 2025 NFL Draft. Advertisement "Doesn't that fit Mike Tomlin's style of play? We're gonna run the football. We're gonna lean on this big, physical offensive line. They've invested a lot of draft capital in the last two years on that group," Canty said. "It feels like the Steelers' brand of football, by rolling with a quarterback like Jalen Milroe, not just how Milroe plays but in terms of what they want their overall identity to be." Milroe was one of the most athletic quarterbacks in all of college football this past season, and Canty thinks that could fit the Steelers' plan perfectly. Pittsburgh weaponized Justin Fields for parts of 2024 to modest success, and could do more with Milroe's quick-twitch athleticism. The Alabama quarterback finished the 2024 season with 2,844 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. But his calling card was in the run game, where he racked up 726 yards and 20 touchdowns using his legs. Advertisement Rodgers has not yet made a decision, so Pittsburgh's current starting QB is Mason Rudolph, but he has proven in the past that he can get the job done. If the Steelers decide they want to draft their quarterback of the future in this year's draft, taking a chance on Milroe could be a very intriguing option.
