Maroons State of Origin squad set to include three debutants as Queensland counts the cost of injury
The 20-year-old centre joins Gold Coast second-rower Beau Fermor and Melbourne lock Trent Loiero as debutants in the Maroons side to play in the Origin series opener on May 28 at Lang Park.
After losing last year's series 2-1, coach Billy Slater has put his faith in new blood.
A pectoral injury to Dolphins forward Tom Gilbert and a calf issue for North Queensland winger Murray Taulagi opened the door to offer new candidates an opportunity.
On the cusp of the side being named, Brisbane outside back Selwyn Cobbo also suffered a possible wrist fracture in the 30-26 loss to St George Illawarra.
Toia overcame two ACL ruptures to finally make his NRL debut this year and in 10 matches, he showcased rare talents.
He has an unflustered temperament along with power, speed and skill. That was best highlighted in a 36-26 win over the Dolphins at Magic Round, where he scored two tries, had a try assist and created carnage.
"I would love to play Origin," former Queensland under-19 representative Toia said after round 11.
"I just remember watching GI [Inglis] and how dominant he was. It didn't matter who was in front of him, he was just able to create havoc."
Fermor, 25, has also suffered two ACL tears. The latest wiped him out of the 2023 season after he had been invited into the Maroons camp in 2022.
This year, he has found his groove as a superb edge forward who runs great lines and defends strongly.
Loiero is well-known for being a feisty forward who plays with physicality and work ethic, highlighted by his average of 117m and 32 tackles per game in 2025.
The Maroons have made other selection decisions forced partly by injury. Incumbent fullback Reece Walsh (knee) and utility Ben Hunt (hamstring) are both unavailable.
Newcastle captain Kalyn Ponga, who came off the bench in game three last year, returns to the starting custodian's role for the first time since the 2022 decider, when he was man of the match.
Maroons champion Cameron Munster is back in the number 6 jersey after missing last year's series with injury. That pushes Cowboys co-captain Tom Dearden from five-eighth to the number 14 jersey previously worn by Hunt with distinction.
Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui also returns to the Maroons side at prop after missing last year with an ACL tear.
LIKELY QUEENSLAND SIDE: 1 Kalyn Ponga, 2 Xavier Coates, 3 Robert Toia, 4 Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, 5 Valentine Holmes, 6 Cameron Munster, 7 Daly Cherry-Evans (c), 8 Moeaki Fotuaika, 9 Harry Grant, 10 Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, 11 Reuben Cotter, 12 Jeremiah Nanai, 13 Pat Carrigan, 14 Tom Dearden, 15 Lindsay Collins, 16 Beau Fermor, 17 Trent Loiero, 18 Kurt Mann, 19 Jesse Arthars, 20 Kulikefu Finefeuiaki.

Gabriela Ruffles leads Australian trio, with Minjee Lee and Grace Kim, in hunt for Evian Championship
A trio of Australians are eyeing more major glory as Gabriela Ruffels and England's Cara Gainer share a one-shot lead on 11-under par after the third round of the Evian Championship on Saturday. Lurking one stroke back is three-time major champion, and former Evian Championship winner, Minjee Lee and fellow Australian Grace Kim. Gainer, making her debut at the fourth women's major of the year, surged up the leaderboard with a 64 highlighted by an eagle on the seventh hole and six additional birdies. 'I made a great par save on the first which really settled my nerves,' said Gainer. 'My eagle putt was definitely a highlight of the day. I hit a great drive, a great hybrid into the green about ten feet and holed the putt.' Ruffels faltered at the start of her round with a bogey on the opening hole but bounced back straight away with a birdie, then added six more. She said: 'I'm having so much fun. 'This is what you practice for, what you play for. I've been working so hard, and it's great to see the hard work pay off.' One shot behind the pair in a tie for third on 10-under par are Lee and Kim, Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul and South Korean overnight leader Lee So-mi. Lee trailed by seven shots going into the final round of the Evian Championship in 2021, and said that gave her confidence that she could produce something special here. 'I'm usually always pretty relaxed, but I definitely feel like I have a different mentality and maybe a little bit different fire in me after KPMG,' said Lee. 'I definitely have a little different motivation I think coming off that win. 'I just feel like I'm in a really good position right now and can chase tomorrow. 'Obviously I was way back (in 2021) and I shot a really good score on Sunday to get into that playoff. 'Going into that I wasn't expecting to shoot a score like that, but then I did and I was obviously happy. 'I was really clutch in the playoff, so that really brings back great memories. 'It feels like a lifetime ago really. Four years, that sounds like a long time.'

Rinky Hijikata and David Pel lose to Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool in Wimbledon final
Rinky Hijikata's hopes of joining Australian doubles' illustrious roll of honour at Wimbledon have been dashed after he and his Dutch partner David Pel were soundly beaten in the men's final. Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool had a partisan crowd cheering when they became the first all-British team to lift the Wimbledon men's doubles crown since 1936 with their 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory. The makeshift duo of Hijikata and Pel saved match points in the first and second rounds, as well as in the semifinal on their way to the tournament decider. Hijikata described it as a "dream come true" to play in the showpiece final, while Pel lightheartedly revealed to the Centre Court crowd the nature of his unlikely partnership with the Australian. "We didn't even meet before the tournament," Pel said. "I mean, it was our first time speaking on the day the tournament started." Pel served five double faults and was broken three times, while Hijikata did his best to hold the partnership together on court. Cash and Glasspool never looked back after they were gifted an early break thanks to a poor service game from Pel and subsequently eased through the opening set with minimum fuss. The Britons comfortably won the second-set tiebreak to seal the title in one hour and 22 minutes. Hijikata was the fifth Australian to reach the men's doubles final in the last 10 editions. He only teamed up with Pel at the start of the tournament when they were originally included in the field as reserves, until another pair's withdrawal allowed them a late call-up. Hijikata, who won the 2023 Australian Open title with Jason Kubler, called his All England Club adventure a "crazy ride". "It's been so much fun playing with David," Hijikata said. "He's brought such a great energy on the court. He's made it very easy for me out there. "It's a dream come true to be playing on Centre Court. A bit shattered, but it was a lot of fun." AAP

Gabi Ruffels shares Evian Championship lead, Grace Kim and Minjee Lee in contention
Australia's Gabi Ruffels will enter the final round of the Evian Championship as the co-leader, a stroke ahead of compatriots Grace Kim and Minjee Lee. Ruffels, ranked 71 in the world, posted a 5-under-par 66 to share the lead with England's Cara Gainer on 11-under at the fourth major of the season at the Evian Resort Club in France. Kim and three-time major winner Lee are in a four-way tie for third place on 10-under. Ruffels, who had started her third round with a bogey, put herself in pole position with six birdies, including a brilliant late burst of four in the last eight holes. Gainer's 7-under 64 was the second-best round of the afternoon. World number six Lee, who endured a second-round struggle, reignited her challenge with a flawless 5-under 66, which featured five birdies. She won the Women's PGA Championship in Texas last month and is seeking to become the first woman since Inbee Park in 2013 to capture back-to-back majors. Kim birdied her last hole for a 1-under 70. Lee and Kim are tied with Thailand's world number two Jeeno Thitikul and South Korea's Somi Lee. World number one Nelly Korda is out of the picture after a hugely disappointing 4-over 75 left her 10 shots off the pace. US-born Ruffels, who was raised in Melbourne, was once a top Australian junior tennis player before turning her attention to golf at the age of 14. She has carved out a promising career so far, becoming US Women's Amateur champion in 2019. Ruffels remains an avid tennis fan, having enjoyed a break at Wimbledon as a guest of doubles great Todd Woodbridge before tackling the Evian Championship. "It was such a cool experience," said Ruffels, whose father Ray coached Woodbridge. "It was great to relax and not touch the clubs for a few days and get over jet lag. Seems to have worked this week." AAP
