Bus carrying students plunges into river in England in 'terrifying' crash
A double-decker bus carrying high school students plunged into a river in southern England on Thursday (June 26, 2025) sending the driver and four teens to the hospital and leaving more than a dozen others with minor injures, officials said.
The bus was bound for Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, a school for 16- to 18-year-olds, when it sped off a road in Eastleigh and plunged into the River Itchen. The cause of the wreck was being investigated by police and the bus company.
Overspeeding suspected
Police said there was no indication why the bus veered off the road. But a woman who lives nearby and heard a screeching sound and saw the bus crash through roadside barriers into the water said the driver told her he couldn't stop.
Kelly West, who helped some of the students to safety, said the bus was driving at a speed of 100 km/hour and said it was like a scene out of 'Speed,' the Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock film about a bus barreling through Los Angeles.
'One of the young adults said the bus was just getting faster and faster as it came down the road and they didn't know what he was going to do," West said. 'I can well imagine they were all thinking they were going to die, quite frankly."
Inspector Andy Tester of the Hampshire Constabulary said it "must have been terrifying.'
All 19 passengers on board were either able to get off the bus or were rescued, police said. The bus driver, who was trapped, and one student had serious injuries but were expected to survive.
West said the driver was alert and sharp, but panicking. She reassured him that help was on the way.
"He said the brakes failed and the accelerator was jammed and that he was trying to avoid cars,' West said.
The bus was sitting upright in the river, next to a bridge, water up to its axles. Its front windows were smashed and mud was splattered on its side. A large section of bridge railing was missing.
About 14 students were treated at the scene by paramedics, the South Central Ambulance Service said. Two helicopters, five ambulances and fire crews responded to the crash.
Bluestar Bus said it did not immediately know the circumstances of the crash.

Woman accuses NRI husband of abuse, files plaint
Ahmedabad: A woman from Thaltej on Thursday filed a complaint with Women's Police (West) in the city against her NRI husband living in Canada. According to the FIR, the man allegedly hid his ongoing relationship and marriage with another woman in Canada and subjected his legal wife in India to mental, physical, and financial distress. Before the marriage, the woman's parents had given the would-be groom Rs 51,000 as a traditional custom. After marriage, when the couple was on a trip abroad, the man allegedly consumed liquor regularly, verbally abused the complainant and even clicked inappropriate photos during private moments. Upon returning to India, they lived with her parents for a day before the man returned to Canada, promising to process her spousal visa, the complaint states. The woman stated in her complaint that she later found out that her husband had not only failed to submit her visa documents but had also demanded Rs 50 lakh from her parents, claiming that the dowry was insufficient. He allegedly pressured her to send inappropriate photos and threatened divorce if she refused. He then blocked her number and sent a WhatsApp message announcing separation. The woman alleges that her husband was in a relationship with a woman in Canada, whom he married and has a tattoo of her name. She claims his entire family was aware of his first wedding before their marriage. She also learned that her name was listed as non-accompanying in her husband's Canadian immigration records. She has demanded legal action against her husband and mother-in-law for harassment, misrepresentation, and violation of marriage promises.

Cybertruck Burned So Hot That Driver's Bones Disintegrated, Lawsuit Claims
A Tesla Cybertruck owner in Texas, US, was burned to death after the car rolled into a ditch, following an accident in which he became trapped inside. As per the lawsuit filed by the victim's family, 47-year-old Michael Sheehan burned so hot in the crash that his bones literally 'disintegrated'. Mr Sheehan bought a brand-new Cybertruck from a Tesla showroom on April 25, 2024. However, just 102 days later, Mr Sheehan was involved in an accident where the car left the road and struck a large concrete culvert. Post the collision, the vehicle's "hyper volatile" battery system went into "thermal runaway" - a chain reaction of short-circuits ultimately resulting in uncontrollable temperature escalation. The family has blamed the company for the incident where Mr Sheehan burned to death at 2,760 degrees Celsius (5,000 Fahrenheit), a fire so hot his bones experienced thermal fracture. "He was eight inches shorter in length than he was before he burned. That's thermal fracture," the family's attorney, S Scott West, told The Independent. The lawsuit added that Mr Sheehan would have survived if it had been virtually any other vehicle. However, the Cybertruck was "defectively designed," trapping him inside and incinerating him. With the power out, Mr Sheehan was unable to open the truck's electronic doors while the external door handles failed too, the suit alleged. "Every religion has a version of hell, and every version of hell has fire. It is the most excruciating and longest torture of any death," said Mr West. "Whether it's steam or fire or electrical, the nerves are literally exposed to everything. It's horrific. If you've ever been to a hospital burn unit, you'll hear patients begging the doctors to let them die because the pain is so bad." Cybertruck design issues As per Mr West, the family had been trying to reach a settlement with Tesla to avoid a lawsuit, but the talks eventually collapsed. The family has claimed that aesthetics took priority over functionality at Tesla when designing the Cybertruck, which contributed to the tragedy. Notably, Mr Sheehan was the first-ever person to perish in a Cybertruck wreck since the model hit the market in November 2023. Three months after his death, three college students in California were also burned to death in a Cybertruck that slammed into a tree after veering off the road. Since its launch, Tesla has issued eight recalls for the Cybertruck over problems ranging from malfunctioning accelerator pedals to faulty windshield wiper motors to body panels.
