Centre rejects Kerala's demand to declare wild boars as vermin
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union government has once again rejected Kerala's demand to declare wild boars as vermin. The Centre is also not in favour of state's demand to remove monkeys (bonnet macaque) from Schedule I to Schedule II. It's the third time Centre is rejecting the state government's demand in this regard.
Sources said the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment has made it clear that it won't accept the two demands put forth by the state government. 'The state government has not yet received any formal communication in this regard. However, Union Minister for Forest and Environment, Bhupendra Yadav, has indicated that the Centre is not keen to consider the state's demands to bring in amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act.
The MoEF is of the view that the state has not been effectively taking existing measures, when it comes to addressing rise in human - wildlife conflict.
Already panchayats and local bodies have been given power to cull wild boars posing a threat to human life and properties.

Pawar says India lacks strong ties with neighbours
Pune: Sharad Pawar, chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), on Tuesday expressed concern over what he termed as the Union government's failure to maintain constructive relations with neighbouring countries. Addressing party workers in Pune during the NCP (SP)'s 26th Foundation Day, Pawar said the current foreign policy has not fostered an environment for effective regional diplomacy. 'During Jawaharlal Nehru's leadership, India had cordial ties with its neighbours,' Pawar noted, contrasting it with what he called a sharp decline in relations with countries such as Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. 'The map of India tells a story — to the north are Pakistan and China, to the east is Bangladesh, and to the south, Sri Lanka. How many of these countries can we claim to have positive and consistent engagement with today?' he asked. Referring to the aftermath of a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Pawar said his party had refrained from politicising the issue, instead choosing to stand behind the government on matters of national security. 'When civilians were killed in the Pahalgam incident, we did not criticise the Centre. We said we would support any firm response,' he said. Pawar said that India's diplomatic position, once respected in the neighbourhood, has weakened. He pointed out that while Bangladesh owes its creation to India's efforts, it now seems distant. 'Sri Lanka is increasingly leaning towards China, raising doubts about its strategic alignment with us,' he said. He concluded by saying that the current situation points to a failure of leadership in nurturing bilateral ties. 'India today cannot claim to have a meaningful dialogue with any of its immediate neighbours. This will come at a cost,' he warned. Pawar also emphasised that his party would not use these issues for political mileage but, along with the Congress and Left parties, would continue to work towards the country's overall progress. Supriya Sule, the party's working president, shared her experience from a recent delegation visit to Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa. She said the leaders there spoke warmly of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi. 'Even as they acknowledge Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the legacy of past Indian leaders remains strong in their memory,' Sule said.

EAM S Jaishankar: India hopeful of trade deal with US before July 9 tariff deadline
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government is 'hopeful' of reaching an agreement on a trade deal with the United States before the tariff suspension ends on 9 July. 'The threat of reciprocal tariffs was raised on April 2, but we had already begun bilateral negotiations for a trade agreement,' Jaishankar said in an interview with French daily Le Figaro. The Minister is on an official visit to Belgium and France until 14 June. 'Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi was hosted by (US President) Donald Trump in February, and they agreed to expand access to each other's markets. We are hopeful of reaching an agreement before the tariff suspension ends on July 9,' Jaishankar said, according to a report in The Indian Express. Jaishankar was responding to a question on Donald Trump administration's threat of a 26 per cent tariff, and the Indian government's relations with the Trump administration. On 2 April, the US announced 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods. However, the decision was paused for 90 days, ending on 9 July. In the interview, Jaishankar reiterated that for over a quarter-century, under five US Presidents, India's ties with the US have continuously strengthened. "Structural forces – economic, technological, educational, scientific, strategic, military – are driving this relationship,' he said. Jaishankar also spoke about the military action between India and Pakistan. He said the issue was actually about terrorism, not Pakistan. 'It has become an India-Pakistan issue because Pakistan harbours and supports terrorists. The conflict is between India and terrorism, not with a specific country,' the Minister said. As many as 26 people were killed and several others injured in the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on 22 April. Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. In a separate interview during the tour, Jaishankar issued a stern warning against future terrorist provocations, reiterating that India will not hesitate to strike back against Pakistan regardless of location. People hopeful of fresh start after MHA declare ₹25 cr for damaged houses in J&K
With the Union ministry of home affairs sanctioning additional ₹25 crore for the cross border shelling victims of J&K, the affected families are hopeful that the amount will help them in starting their life afresh. Around 2,000 houses were damaged in J&K during the cross border shelling last month post operation Sindoor when Pakistani army targeted civilian areas in several parts of union territory. The victims say the UT government gave them peanuts which wasn't enough to lay foundation of the house. With additional ₹25 crores now the affected families can be compensated in a better way especially those who lost everything in the cross border shelling in Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, Uri and Kupwara. The UT administration has already completed the assessment of damaged properties and submitted it's report to ministry of home affairs. Even the J&K BJP also submitted assessment report about the damaged properties. 'I lost my house and couldn't retrieve anything. So far we received ₹1.10 lakh from the J&K government. We don't know what to do with this money as everything is costly nowadays,' said Mohammad Yunus of Salamabad in Uri where five houses were completely damaged. The affected families have been shifted to government accommodation. 'We heard the Centre has released another ₹25 crores and hope now we will be given adequate compensation so that we can begin our lives afresh,' he said. Another villager, Firoz ud din said shelling has left them on the road. 'Our house was damaged completely and now we are on road. Government gave us an amount which is just peanuts. With central aid we are hopeful now good compensation will be provided to us so that we can rebuild our houses.' Earlier, PM Narendra Modi had announced additional compensation for houses damaged by Pakistani shelling in the border districts of Jammu and Kashmir following Operation Sindoor. The MHA ensured swift implementation of PM's announcement. 'This is an additional amount to what these families have received as per norms set by centre and state government,' said a senior J&K government officer. Alone in Uri, Kupwara and Tanghdar around 600 structures were damaged completely or partially most of the properties belong to villagers living below poverty. CPI(M) delegation in Uri A high-powered delegation of CPI(M) visited Uri and met the families affected in shelling-affected villages. CPI(M) general secretary and legislator Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami said the delegation led by the national general secretary CPI(M) MA Baby, comprised members of Parliament Amra Ram, K Radhakrishnan, John Brittas, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, SU Venkatesan, and AA Rahim. The leaders said that the aim of this visit of the delegation is to express solidarity with villagers affected by cross border shelling and to assess the situation on the ground zero.
