🏆 Glory for Gators, heartbreak for Houston
68 teams entered, one team won it all. ()
Florida cut down the nets on Monday night in San Antonio after beating Houston, 65-63, in a game where they trailed almost the entire time.

Time with lead:
Florida: 1:04
Houston: 30:44
Back on top: The Cougars forced the Gators to play their game, but in the end they played it better, securing their third national championship and denying Houston its first.
Houston falls to 0-3 in title games. ()
From Yahoo Sports' Jeff Eisenberg:
Houston once again has failed to shed the unwanted label of men's college basketball's greatest program never to win a national title. The Cougars have now made seven Final Fours and three title games without experiencing the joy of cutting down nets.
This time the heartbreak came at the hands of a Florida program that entered rarified air by winning a third national title. Only the bluest of blue bloods — UCLA (11), Kentucky (8), UConn (6), North Carolina (6), Duke (5), Indiana (5) and Kansas (4) — have more.

That Florida rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the second half was a fitting way for the Gators to finish this memorable run. They trailed by six or more points in the second half in four of their six NCAA tournament victories.
They fell behind by nine points against Auburn early in the second half of Saturday's Final Four matchup and by as many as 10 points against Texas Tech in the Elite Eight.
"We didn't point fingers, didn't start to make hero plays, gambling defensively," said head coach Todd Golden. Added guard Alijah Martin, "We never blinked. Now we're national champs."

⛳️ Eight lefties
There are eight left-handed golfers in the 2025 Masters field, the most in the history of the tournament. They are: Phil Mickelson (3x winner), Bubba Watson (2x winner), Mike Weir (1x winner), Akshay Bhatia, Brian Harman, Joe Highsmith, Bob MacIntyre and Matt McCarty.

⛳️ 41st start
Two-time champion Bernhard Langer will make his 41st and final Masters start this week. Just how long has the 67-year-old been around? Gene Sarazen, born in 1902, was in the field when Langer played his first major (1976 Open); Tom Kim, born in 2002, will be in the field when he plays his last.

⛳️ $1.50
For the 23rd consecutive year, the Pimento Cheese sandwich at the Masters will cost $1.50. The popular menu item cost $1 back in 1997, but factoring for inflation, the sandwich is actually 50 cents cheaper today.

Tigers activate Alex Lange from injured list; Bailey Horn optioned to Triple-A Toledo

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Alex Lange is known for wearing a turtleneck underneath his jersey during games. "It's back," he said. The Tigers activated Lange from the injured list Monday, Aug. 18, before the opener of a three-game series against the Houston Astros at Comerica Park. To open a roster spot, the Tigers optioned left-handed reliever Bailey Horn to Triple-A Toledo. Lange hasn't pitched for the Tigers since May 22, 2024. "I'm excited to be back here and in the locker room again," Lange said before Monday's game. "It felt like Christmas morning waking up. Being able to come here and put a jersey on tonight, it's pretty cool." POSITIVE VIBES: Tigers reliever Alex Lange motivated by 'World Series rings' The 29-year-old has spent the past 14 months recovering surgery to repair an avulsion in his right latissimus dorsi tendon, which he underwent in late June 2024. When healthy, Lange racked up 26 saves in 32 opportunities as the Tigers' closer in 2023, posting a 3.68 ERA with 45 walks and 79 strikeouts across 66 innings in 67 games. Everything went downhill in 2024. Before the lat injury, Lange registered a 4.34 ERA with two saves in two opportunities in 2024, responsible for 17 walks compared to 21 strikeouts over 18⅔ innings in 21 games. The Tigers optioned Lange to Triple-A Toledo for performance reasons in May 2024, then he suffered the injury with the Mud Hens in June 2024. SUNDAY'S ROSTER MOVE: Tigers recall Brenan Hanifee after minimum stay in Triple-A; Brant Hurter sent down Although the Tigers activated Lange from the 60-day injured list, a 40-man roster move wasn't required because it was at 39 players. The 40-man roster is now full. This story will be updated. Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@ or follow him @EvanPetzold. How good is Houston's top trio? Bleacher Report ranks them among NBA elite

The Houston Rockets have a deep roster for the 2025-26 NBA season, but they also have plenty of star power near the top. With that in mind, Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz ranks Houston as having the fourth-best trio among all 30 NBA teams. 'The Rockets already had a strong net rating when Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson shared the floor last season (plus-11.1),' Swartz writes. 'The trade for Kevin Durant was also addition by subtraction, however, as Houston was a ridiculous plus-26.8 with Şengün, Thompson, and noJalen Green in 772 possessions last season.' 'Adding Durant in place of Green to a young, successful, and elite defensive team was the perfect fit for the 15-time All-Star,' he adds via Bleacher Report. Sengun earned his first All-Star honor last season, and the hope is that Thompson isn't far behind. The three superior trios on Bleacher Report's list are the No. 3 Cleveland Cavaliers (Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland); the No. 2 Denver Nuggets (Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon); and the No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren). Immediately behind Houston at No. 5 are the Los Angeles Clippers, who have former Rockets star James Harden paired with Kawhi Leonard and Bradley Beal. Honorable mentions went to the Los Angeles Lakers (Luka Dončić, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves), New York Knicks Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby), and Golden State Warriors (Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green). NBA 2K ranks Rockets' Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson among top-40 available players

The 2025-26 Houston Rockets have one clear top-tier player in Kevin Durant, but could they have as many as three? In NBA 2K's latest rankings of the league's top 100 players for its upcoming NBA 2K26 video game, both Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson check in with overall ratings of '87.' As part of an annual offseason exercise conducted by developers of the popular video-game franchise, players are rated in various categories on a scale rising as high as 100, and that determines their skills in the game. While both have the same overall ratings, NBA 2K lists Sengun as the No. 34 player in the league, while Thompson is at No. 41. To this point, player rankings from No. 100 to No. 31 have been revealed, with No. 30 to No. 1 still to be released over the coming days. Presumably, Durant will be among that list. However, it's worth noting one player ahead of both Thompson and Sengun is Portland's Damian Lillard (No. 32) — who is expected to miss all of next season while recovering from an Achilles injury. The same should be the case with Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton and Boston's Jayson Tatum, who suffered the same injury in the 2025 playoffs. Each appears likely to be placed on that top-30 list. So, among those who will actually play this season, both Thompson and Sengun are among the top-40 players. And in Sengun's case, he's knocking on the door of a top-30 placement, if you exclude players with season-ending injuries. Ultimately, it's one arbitrary and largely inconsequential data set based on outside opinions. But, it does showcase the optimism that Houston has regarding the high-end upside of its 2025-26 roster — and it's not solely based on Durant. More: How good is Houston's top trio?
