NA body briefed about NTS, PEC issues
The meeting agenda included briefing on the National Testing Service (NTS) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
During the briefing on NTS, the committee has directed the Ministry of Science and Technology to fully resolve the matter concerning the NTS. It has also recommended involving the Ministry of Law to ensure a comprehensive and formal resolution of the issue.
The ministry was instructed to take prompt and decisive action, ensuring all steps taken are in complete compliance with the relevant statutory requirements. Members of the committee reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. They stressed that the collaboration between the NTS and the Ministry of Law must result in a coherent and sustainable solution that upholds public confidence in institutional processes.
In the second agenda item, PEC presented a detailed briefing on its ongoing initiatives and strategic direction. PEC continues to play a pivotal role in advancing Pakistan's engineering sector by adhering to international accreditation standards and fostering lifelong learning among professionals. The Council has successfully implemented an internationally benchmarked Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Accreditation System, ensuring that engineering programs across the country meet global quality standards and produce competent, industry-ready professionals.
To support continuous learning, PEC is actively promoting Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in collaboration with various Professional Engineering Bodies (PEBs). These CPD activities are designed to enhance technical and soft skills, enabling engineers to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global environment. Furthermore, PEC conducts the Engineering Practice Examination (EPE) nationwide, granting successful candidates the esteemed title of 'Professional Engineer', which enhances their credibility and employability within the engineering sector.
To bridge the gap between academia and industry, PEC has introduced a six-month structured training program for fresh graduates. This initiative equips young engineers with practical exposure, technical competencies, and essential soft skills, preparing them for real-world challenges. PEC reiterated its commitment to developing a highly skilled and resilient engineering workforce, essential for sustainable development and technological innovation across Pakistan.
The meeting was attended by MNAs, Shahnaz Saleem Malik (On Zoom), Seema Mohiuddin Jamili, Irfan Ali Leghari, Ramesh Lal, Mahtab Akbar Rashdi (On Zoom), Khurram Shahzad Virk (On Zoom), Mian Ghous Muhammad, Muhammad Moazzam Ali Khan ,Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi along with senior officers from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Shaza announces Pakistan's digital transformation roadmap
ISLAMABAD: On Pakistan's 78th Independence Day, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced a digital transformation roadmap under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Digital Nation Pakistan vision, pledging to turn the country into a self-reliant, technology-driven economy. The minister, addressing a high-profile ceremony of leaders from government, industry, startups, and academia, paid tribute to Marka-e-Haq — Pakistan's victory over India in May — calling it a historic moment that demonstrated national courage, professionalism, and technological capability. She lauded the Armed Forces, particularly COAS Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their leadership, dedication, and sacrifices in steering both the nation's defence and its technological advancement. Highlighting Pakistan's global recognition, Khawaja noted that the country achieved Tier-1 'Role Modelling' status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index and climbed 14 ranks in the UN E-Government Development Index to enter the High EGDI category for the first time. She celebrated progress in digital inclusion, revealing that as per the 2025 GSMA Gender Gap Report, the mobile internet gender gap had reduced from 38 per cent to 25 per cent, with eight million women coming online in FY 2024-25. Women's mobile internet usage nearly doubled from 10 per cent to 19 per cent, meeting the personal target she set upon assuming office. Khawaja outlined the future roadmap under Digital Nation Pakistan, focusing on youth empowerment, improved governance, industry facilitation, and building a robust Digital Public Infrastructure. Key initiatives include: National AI Policy 2025 to promote ethical AI innovation and economic growth; National Fiberisation Initiative to expand high-speed internet access nationwide; IMT Spectrum Auction to ensure 5G readiness, attract foreign investment, and boost telecom growth; Satellite Internet Services for universal connectivity; Uninterrupted Internet Policy for IT Companies to ensure reliable, high-quality connections for IT exports; DigiSkills 3.0 to train over 3.3 million IT professionals in three years, including 300,000 via Huawei and 200,000 via Google. She linked the spirit of independence to digital sovereignty, stating that true freedom in the modern era means self-reliance in technology, innovation, and governance. Concluding, she vowed: 'With Marka-e-Haq, Pakistan proved it cannot be ignored. On this 14th August, we commit to using technology to build an equitable and prosperous Pakistan within our lifetime.' Pakistan, Romania explore joint ventures for EU, Gulf markets
Pakistan and Romania are exploring cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, with proposed joint ventures in software development for the EU and Gulf markets. A statement on Saturday read that the development came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi and the Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan, Dan Stoenescu, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in science, technology, innovation, and education. Stoenescu proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, and Romania's National Authority for Digitalisation and National Authority for Research. A proposal for organising a Romania–Pakistan Science and Technology Forum, with a special focus on the IT sector, was also tabled. 'Romania stands ready for practical, results-oriented cooperation that supports Pakistan's national priorities while strengthening our bilateral partnership,' said Stoenescu. Romania offers Constanța Port as gateway for Pakistani exports to Europe During the meeting, the Romanian envoy reaffirmed his country's commitment to fostering strong collaboration with Pakistan, especially recognising the nation's steady progress in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and regional technology inclusion. Stoenescu offered Pakistan access to key European Union-funded programs through Romania's facilitative role in the EU. These include Horizon Europe (€95.5 billion research and innovation programme), Erasmus+ (education and academic exchange), and the Digital Europe Programme. These platforms create opportunities for Pakistani institutions to engage in collaborative initiatives in AI, cybersecurity, renewable energy, space technology, agriculture, and green innovation. Meanwhile, Federal Minister Magsi commended Romania's leadership in producing globally recognised tech solutions and unicorn companies, and he also expressed Pakistan's interest in learning from Romania's successful transition to a knowledge-based economy. The two sides explored further areas for long-term collaboration, including establishing joint ventures for software development targeting EU and Gulf markets, capacity building in cybersecurity, academic and tech exchanges between Romania's innovation hubs and Pakistan's National Incubation Centres, and joint research in AI, IoT, and blockchain under Horizon Europe and Digital Europe frameworks. Collaboration in e-government solutions and digital public service transformation was also discussed.
