Veteran skip Carruthers pulls out of curling Pre-Trials to focus on coaching

Global News25-06-2025
Team Reid Carruthers has pulled out of the Home Hardware Pre-Trials in October and has been replaced by Team Jayden King, Curling Canada said Wednesday.
Carruthers, from Winnipeg, plans to focus on his coaching commitments with Team Kerri Einarson, the sport organization said in a statement.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the 40-year-old skip, who won national and world titles in 2011 with Jeff Stoughton, planned to continue curling next season.
Carruthers guided his team to a Manitoba title last winter and an appearance in the Page Playoff 3-4 game at the Montana's Brier in Kelowna, B.C.

He was eliminated after dropping a 6-5 decision to Alberta's Brad Jacobs, who went on to win the title.
A message left with Carruthers wasn't immediately returned. He has served as the Team Einarson coach throughout the current quadrennial.

King, from London, Ont., filled the vacancy in the eight-team Pre-Trials men's field as the highest-ranked rink that had yet to qualify.
Curling Canada announced the draw schedules for both the Pre-Trials and the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials on Wednesday.
The winners of the Oct. 20-26 Pre-Trials in Wolfville, N.S., will secure the final berths in the eight-team fields for the Nov. 22-30 Trials in Halifax.
The Trials will determine Canada's representatives in four-player men's and women's curling at the 2026 Milan Olympics.

National Lacrosse League's Albany FireWolves moving to Oshawa

Social Sharing Oshawa will soon be home to a professional lacrosse team as the Albany FireWolves are moving to the city. The FireWolves are relocating ahead of the 2025-2026 season, according to a news release from the National Lacrosse League (NLL) on Tuesday. The team will play its home games at the Tribute Communities Centre in downtown Oshawa. "Oshawa sits within one of the core epicentres of the indoor lacrosse world in Ontario … The energy and passion of the sports' fans in this area make this an ideal home for the franchise and our league," NLL Commissioner Brett Frood said in the news release. The FireWolves will keep their name for the upcoming season, the NLL said. Details about branding and community initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks. They are now the second NLL team based in the Greater Toronto Area, alongside the Toronto Rock. The other Canadian teams in the league are the Calgary Roughnecks, Ottawa Black Bears, Halifax Thunderbirds, Vancouver Warriors and Saskatchewan Rush. Move is 'bittersweet,' Albany FireWolves say The Albany FireWolves thanked their supporters "for [their] passion, loyalty, and dedication" in a statement on Instagram. "There were several challenges, both at the state and local level that made the economics of staying in Albany untenable, which makes this decision bittersweet," the statement read. WATCH | Lacrosse returning to Summer Olympics in 2028 after more than 100 years: Lacrosse more than just a sport for many Indigenous communities 1 year ago The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, and that's when lacrosse will return to the playing fields after an absence of more than 100 years. It is Canada's national summer sport, but as Monia Blanchet tells us, for many Indigenous communities, lacrosse represents much more. The team said it is excited to begin a new chapter in Durham Region and share the Tribute Communities Centre with the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals. "We will work tirelessly to earn the respect of the community and to create a team and game-day experience that families, fans, and businesses can rally behind," the statement read. The FireWolves were the runners-up in the 2024 NLL season, falling to the Buffalo Bandits. The franchise relocated to Albany from New England ahead of the 2021-2022 season, according to an archived page from their website. Oshawa has rich lacrosse history Lacrosse was invented by the Haudenosaunee, a confederacy of the Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk), Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora Nations. Oshawa's lacrosse history goes back to neighbourhood leagues in 1872, said Todd Powless, vice-president of recreational lacrosse for the Oshawa Minor Lacrosse Association — also known as the Oshawa Blue Knights. In the 1960s, the Oshawa Green Gaels, a junior lacrosse team, won a record-setting seven consecutive Minto Cup championships — the national junior men's lacrosse championship. "We have that in Oshawa as our legacy," Powless said. The FireWolves' move will mean fans will have a team that is easily accessible, he said. The Toronto Rock currently play in Hamilton, which is a long commute. "It's kind of like winning a lacrosse lottery," he said. Powless said he also hopes the team will inspire more people to play lacrosse across the region. "The main question is, where can we get season tickets?" he said.

Saskatchewan parents step up to the plate amid Air Canada flight cancellations

As Air Canada begins to wind operations back up at Saskatchewan's major airports, the lingering effects of the strike are still being felt by passengers. Team Saskatchewan's 15U Selects baseball team was in danger of missing the first pitch at the Ray Carter Cup in Prince Edward Island, but thanks to some quick thinking, the team's parents banded together to come up with a way to get the boys out east. 'There's a number of hoops to jump through, but all the parents were unbelievably selfless and helped their kids out and managed to make it work.' 'It just worked out that we had 18 or 19 family members flying out on WestJet, which was pretty much the exact number of flights we needed to get the players and coaching staff out there,' said team parent Trevor Weir.
