Veteran skip Carruthers pulls out of curling Pre-Trials to focus on coaching
Carruthers, from Winnipeg, plans to focus on his coaching commitments with Team Kerri Einarson, the sport organization said in a statement.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the 40-year-old skip, who won national and world titles in 2011 with Jeff Stoughton, planned to continue curling next season.
Carruthers guided his team to a Manitoba title last winter and an appearance in the Page Playoff 3-4 game at the Montana's Brier in Kelowna, B.C.

He was eliminated after dropping a 6-5 decision to Alberta's Brad Jacobs, who went on to win the title.
A message left with Carruthers wasn't immediately returned. He has served as the Team Einarson coach throughout the current quadrennial.

King, from London, Ont., filled the vacancy in the eight-team Pre-Trials men's field as the highest-ranked rink that had yet to qualify.
Curling Canada announced the draw schedules for both the Pre-Trials and the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials on Wednesday.
The winners of the Oct. 20-26 Pre-Trials in Wolfville, N.S., will secure the final berths in the eight-team fields for the Nov. 22-30 Trials in Halifax.
The Trials will determine Canada's representatives in four-player men's and women's curling at the 2026 Milan Olympics.

Social Sharing Oshawa will soon be home to a professional lacrosse team as the Albany FireWolves are moving to the city. The FireWolves are relocating ahead of the 2025-2026 season, according to a news release from the National Lacrosse League (NLL) on Tuesday. The team will play its home games at the Tribute Communities Centre in downtown Oshawa. "Oshawa sits within one of the core epicentres of the indoor lacrosse world in Ontario … The energy and passion of the sports' fans in this area make this an ideal home for the franchise and our league," NLL Commissioner Brett Frood said in the news release. The FireWolves will keep their name for the upcoming season, the NLL said. Details about branding and community initiatives will be announced in the coming weeks. They are now the second NLL team based in the Greater Toronto Area, alongside the Toronto Rock. The other Canadian teams in the league are the Calgary Roughnecks, Ottawa Black Bears, Halifax Thunderbirds, Vancouver Warriors and Saskatchewan Rush. Move is 'bittersweet,' Albany FireWolves say The Albany FireWolves thanked their supporters "for [their] passion, loyalty, and dedication" in a statement on Instagram. Oshawa's lacrosse history goes back to neighbourhood leagues in 1872, said Todd Powless, vice-president of recreational lacrosse for the Oshawa Minor Lacrosse Association — also known as the Oshawa Blue Knights. In the 1960s, the Oshawa Green Gaels, a junior lacrosse team, won a record-setting seven consecutive Minto Cup championships — the national junior men's lacrosse championship. "We have that in Oshawa as our legacy," Powless said. The FireWolves' move will mean fans will have a team that is easily accessible, he said. The Toronto Rock currently play in Hamilton, which is a long commute. "It's kind of like winning a lacrosse lottery," he said. Powless said he also hopes the team will inspire more people to play lacrosse across the region. "The main question is, where can we get season tickets?" he said.

Pickleball nationals take over Taylor Tennis Centre
It's 'game on' at Taylor Tennis Centre in Winnipeg. Over 700 athletes are competing in Pickleball nationals, the sport's largest tournament in Canada. It's the first time the event has been held in Winnipeg. 'It brings a lot of focus to the game. It's an affirmation for Pickleball Manitoba, people are coming from all over Canada and some from the states. It will help grow the game in Winnipeg for sure,' the former president of Pickleball Canada, Garth Merkeley, said.
