Sampdoria in line to avoid relegation to Serie C after chaotic playoff abandoned

The Guardian23-06-2025
The second leg of the Serie B relegation playoff between hosts Salernitana and Sampdoria was abandoned on Sunday after home fans threw smoke bombs and seats on to the pitch.
Sampdoria were leading 2-0 when the match was initially postponed in the 65th minute as Salernitana fans hurled objects on to the pitch. Play briefly resumed but was ultimately abandoned amid chaotic scenes at the Stadio Arechi.
According to Italian media, Sampdoria are likely to be awarded a 3-0 win, which would secure a 5-0 aggregate victory and guarantee their escape from what had seemed certain relegation to the third tier.
Salernitana's CEO, Maurizio Milan, told a press conference that the club would go down to Serie C. 'We hoped to [restart] from [Serie B], we'll do it from Serie C,' he said. 'We know very well that the third division is very complicated. We'll start again immediately, learning from our mistakes.'
Sampdoria, Italian champions in 1991, were initially relegated to Serie C for the first time in their 78-year history, only to be handed a lifeline after the season ended when Brescia were docked points for financial irregularities, dropping them below Sampdoria and granting the Genoa club a place in the relegation playoff.

Salernitana also suffered a setback after being hit by food poisoning, which led to the second leg being postponed following Sampdoria's 2-0 home win in the first leg.

Johnston no stranger to 'brutal' away trips

Alistair Johnston has urged his team-mates to "keep pushing" and "not waste a single minute" in the first leg of Celtic's Champions League play-off against Kairat Almaty on right-back outlined the challenges of the travel for the second leg which involves a 7,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan."It's massive," said Johnston. "I've talked to the guys that played another team from Kazakhstan, Astana, a few years back and had a pretty comfortable lead going into that second leg, and before you know it, it can get really difficult out there."The travel, the time change, it's not an easy away day at all."You need to make sure you're taking full advantage at home when you have the conditions in your favour and have the crowd on our side."That's something that I don't think is lost on us, being at home first. That's going to be something in the mentality where, if you get one, you've got to keep pushing and keep pushing. It's going to have to be the full 90 minutes and don't waste a single minute of it."Johnston drew on his experience for travelling on international duty and said: "It's not fun, I'll tell you that much, it's pretty brutal."It will be a bit of an eye-opener, I guess, for some of the European boys who are used to their camps being a little hour, two-hour flight away."When you're crossing an ocean or five to eight hours of time zones, it really adds up and makes it difficult. We've had some travel days that have probably added up to about 24 hours."The 26-year-old scored in Celtic's 4-1 win against Falkirk in the Scottish League Cup with a left-footed finish past former team-mate Scott added: "It was kind of just a left-foot swing of the pendulum, I think I caught Bainy by surprise because I don't think I've ever actually taken a shot with my left foot before."I'll definitely be giving him a little bit because he deserves it. He was having a go at my garden, saying that my grass was all patchy, and he's right. I know he's got a great garden, so we have a little bit of a thing going on there, me and him."

Man Utd lose thrilling league opener to Arsenal after Altay Bayindir blunder

Altay Bayindir's blunder handed Arsenal victory and undid a positive Manchester United performance in Sunday's pulsating Premier League encounter. Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. Advertisement United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Ruben Amorim's side fell to a 1-0 defeat as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori (centre) celebrates scoring (Nick Potts/PA) The back-up goalkeeper was outmuscled by William Saliba as he attempted to deal with a Declan Rice corner, tipping it on for the defender to nod into an empty net and silence Old Trafford after a bright start. Bayindir's error underlined concerns over the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford, where often unconvincing number one Andre Onana was absent as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, with Patrick Dorgu hitting a post with a lasered first-half effort. Advertisement Arsenal keeper David Raya produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay, with his man of the match of the display helping Arteta's side to victory. The atmosphere was as intense as United's start as they flew out the blocks in the summer sun, with Mbeumo getting an early attempt on goal as the hosts bossed play and the early possession. But Arsenal would take the sting out of proceedings with just 13 minutes on the clock. Bayindir flapped at Rice's inswinging corner under pressure from Saliba, with the Turkey international meekly palming on for Calafiori to head over the line. United's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears as Arsenal scored their 31st Premier League goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 campaign – 11 more than any other team. Advertisement That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. 🆕🇸🇮🔴 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) August 17, 2025 Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached. Advertisement Arsenal were solid but unspectacular when the second half got under way, with Arteta replacing ineffective debutant Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark. The Sweden international had shone under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and had previously been linked with a move to United, whose fans cheered his substitution. United's new frontman Benjamin Sesko was introduced to a huge roar shortly after, offering a tantalising first look at their rebuilt front three. 🎶 One-nil to The Arsenal 🎶 — Arsenal (@Arsenal) August 17, 2025 Cunha continued confidently and Mbeumo was a handful, with an acrobatic attempt soon followed by a header that forced a full stretch save from Raya. Advertisement Sesko nodded across the face of goal as the home side continued to knock on the door, but Arsenal dug deep and Rice saw a whipped free-kick deflect narrowly wide at the other end. United pushed until the end and Cunha saw a penalty claim ignored, but there was no leveller as Arteta's side started the season with a win as '1-0 to the Arsenal' echoed around the ground.

'You expect to see the game out'

Oxford United manager Gary Rowett spoke to BBC Radio Oxford after the 3-2 defeat at Hull City"We changed the shape several times just to try and give ourselves a little bit more of a foothold," he said. "Of course they start and score a goal early, which is very disappointing from our perspective, and then to come in at half-time - I thought we rode our luck really first half."We ended up scoring two very good goals, both from set-pieces, but ultimately we probably should have been a couple more goals down because it was far too easy for them to open us up and create chances."[We] Switched to a five [at the back in the] second half to give us a bit of grip in the game defensively."We didn't get up the pitch enough, but I don't think they had many big chances. I thought we looked quite solid. You expect to see the game out."
