RIYADH — As observatories across Saudi Arabia prepare to sight the Shawwal crescent moon, experts say conditions may allow for the moon to be seen on Saturday evening, marking the potential end of Ramadan.
Renowned moon-sighter Abdullah Al-Khudairi from the Sudair observatory said the moon's position today is more favorable than it was at the start of Ramadan.
'The crescent is expected to remain in the sky for around eight minutes after sunset,' he explained, while stressing that lunar eclipses or solar eclipses have no bearing on moon visibility.
From the Tamir observatory, observer Mutib Al-Burghash said the sighting is not impossible. 'If the skies remain clear, it is possible to see the crescent,' he said.
However, the National Center of Meteorology noted that cloud formations may affect sky conditions over Sudair and Tamir.
The Supreme Court has urged all Muslims across the Kingdom to try to sight the moon on Saturday evening, the 29th of Ramadan, corresponding to March 29.

The ministry urged pilgrims to use umbrellas, increase their water intake, and adhere to group planning. It underscored the continuous efforts of medical teams to monitor and treat cases, all as part of the health sector's comprehensive endeavors for a safe and healthy Hajj.

This prominent landmark, located 17 kilometers from the Grand Mosque and rising about 65 meters high, holds deep religious significance as the place where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his Farewell Sermon. Reflecting the leadership's commitment to pilgrim welfare, new projects totaling 196,000 square meters have been implemented around Jabal Al-Rahmah to combat heat stress. Saudi Arabia's National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has achieved complete atmospheric coverage of the holy sites during the Hajj 2025 season. This initiative significantly enhances field and technical operations, ensuring the safety of pilgrims while improving forecasting accuracy. As part of its operational readiness plan, NCM deployed 16 automatic monitoring stations across Makkah and the holy sites. Additionally, two manned stations in Mina and Arafat further bolster this extensive network. This strategic deployment enables the issuance of 1,920 hourly weather bulletins, providing timely updates to all stakeholders. Enhanced Observation Capabilities NCM supports real-time observation capabilities through a mobile monitoring center. This center enhances the accuracy and reliability of weather data, ensuring that pilgrims receive the most current information available. In Madinah, the center activated six automated stations and a manned observatory at Madinah Airport. Coverage in the region improves with a dedicated weather radar system. This system is complemented by three auxiliary radars located in Jeddah, Taif, and Yanbu. To support awareness efforts, NCM launched a specialized media and communication production center in Mina.
