Serving aces and slicing cakes – the right balance for Ler Qi

Mixing it up: Junior women's singles shuttler Eng Ler Qi at training.
PETALING JAYA: Junior shuttler Eng Ler Qi has a unique way of relaxing away from the badminton court.
The reigning Under-18 national girls' singles champion loves to bake cakes and pastries in her free time.
Ler Qi learnt to bake all by herself and the hobby helps her to mentally reset before returning to training.
'Usually, I like to bake some pastries and cakes to take my mind off badminton for a while,' said Ler Qi.
'I learnt to bake myself and it is a soothing hobby. I feel calmer after baking. Training every day can be tough, so it's good to have a hobby like this.'
Ler Qi is currently preparing to make her debut in the Asian Junior Championships from July 18-27 in Solo, Indonesia.
The 17-year-old from Selangor will join Oo Shan Zi, Lim Zhi Shin, Low Zi Yu and Lee Mun in the girls' singles.
'I'm excited about my first Asian meet and I will give my all,' said Ler Qi.
'There're about three weeks left and I'm working hard in training every day to be able to perform well in the tournament.'
Ler Qi, who trains under Misbun Ramdan, gained some valuable experience after competing in a few lower tier senior European tournaments last month.
Her best performance came in the Slovak Open where she reached the semi-finals.
'Playing in Europe gave me a chance to test myself in senior tournaments,' said Ler Qi.
'They were not high level events but I still gained lots of experience. My performances were not consistent, so there's room for improvement.
'I need to work on my strength and power and I'm working on these with coach Ramdan.'
The youngster knows she needs to raise her game to have a chance of winning a medal in the Asian Juniors.
In last year's edition, Siti Zulaikha Azmi won bronze in the girls' singles.

Soccer-Palace mull legal steps after losing appeal over Europa League demotion

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FA Cup - Final - Crystal Palace v Manchester City - Wembley Stadium, London, Britain - May 17, 2025 Crystal Palace players huddle before the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -Crystal Palace said on Tuesday they are seeking legal advice on possible next steps after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the club's appeal against UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League to the Conference League. European soccer's governing body made the decision over Palace's multi-club ownership rule breach because at the time of assessment on March 1 the John Textor-founded Eagle Football Group were majority owners of fellow Europa League side Olympique Lyonnais and also held shares in Palace. U.S. businessman Textor's Eagle Football Holdings sold their stake in Palace last month. However, CAS upheld UEFA's ruling on Monday, and dismissed Palace's argument that the club received unfair treatment in comparison to Lyon and Nottingham Forest, with the latter replacing them in the Europa League. "The decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless," Palace, who had qualified for the Europa League as FA Cup winners, said in a statement. "It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power ... while we respect the CAS tribunal members, the process is designed to severely restrict and, in our case, make it almost impossible to receive a fair hearing. "UEFA's decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport. A combination of poorly conceived regulations and their unequal application means our brilliant fans will be deprived of the chance to watch this team compete in the Europa League for the first time in our history." UEFA and CAS were not immediately available to comment. Palace said the European Court of Justice's ruling earlier this month, which allows national courts to conduct in-depth reviews of arbitral awards by CAS to ensure they are compliant with EU law, will ensure greater scrutiny of sport's top court. "Only then will fairness and due process be granted to every team," Palace added. "Although we continue to take legal advice on the next steps, we will compete in the Conference League." Palace, who won the Community Shield on Sunday with victory over Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties, are in the Conference League qualifying playoff round later this month. Soccer-PSG sign Ukrainian defender Zabarnyi from Bournemouth on five-year deal

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - AFC Bournemouth v Manchester United - Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth, Britain - April 27, 2025 AFC Bournemouth's Ilya Zabarnyi during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Tony O Brien/File Photo (Reuters) -Paris St Germain have signed centre back Illia Zabarnyi from Premier League club Bournemouth on a five-year contract, the European champions said on Tuesday, with the 22-year-old becoming the French club's first Ukrainian player in history. Financial details were not disclosed but media reports said the transfer fee was worth around 63 million euros ($73 million). The Ukraine international was a key part of Bournemouth's defensive line-up last season, making 36 appearances as the club achieved positive goal difference in a Premier League campaign for the first time, finishing ninth. Zabarnyi is the latest Bournemouth defender to depart this summer after Dean Huijsen joined Real Madrid and Milos Kerkez signed for Liverpool. "I'm very happy to join Paris Saint-Germain, the best club in the world, with the best project. I am here to give everything I have on the pitch and I'm looking forward to making my debut and meeting the fans," Zabarnyi said in a statement. Zabarnyi made his senior debut at his hometown club Dyanmo Kyiv before joining Bournemouth in January 2023 on a five-and-a-half year contract. The English club awarded Zabarnyi, known for his aggressive defending and dominance in aerial duels, with a contract extension until 2029 after an impressive 2023-24 campaign. "We're delighted to continue the strengthening of our squad with the signature of Illia Zabarnyi. Illia is a talented international player and a great professional. He will make a major contribution to everything that we are building long-term at Paris Saint-Germain," PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi said. Ligue 1 and the Champions League winners PSG face Tottenham Hotspur for the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
