Monsoon Woes: Pediatrician Shares How To Protect Your Child From Monsoon Illnesses

Children fall sick in monsoon due to a sharp rise in waterborne infections. A pediatrician explains how you can keep your children safe from seasonal illnesses.
As monsoon showers sweep across Maharashtra, hospitals in cities like Pune and Mumbai are seeing a sharp rise in paediatric waterborne infections. Among them, doctors have reported an increase in seasonal illnesses like diarrhoea, typhoid, and jaundice.
'This season has seen nearly a 40% spike in monsoon-related infections among children," says Dr. Rohini Nagarkar, Senior Consultant and Academic Head of Paediatrics at Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital, Pune. She attributes the surge to a combination of waterlogging, poor drainage, and contamination of drinking water supplies – a recurring concern during heavy rains.
When Rain Breeds Risk
Pathogens such as E. coli, rotavirus, hepatitis A, and cholera thrive in stagnant water and unclean environments. 'Children are especially vulnerable due to their underdeveloped immune systems and greater exposure to unhygienic surroundings," Dr. Nagarkar warns.
Common culprits include street food, shared water bottles, and improperly washed produce.
Early symptoms may seem mild, such as stomach cramps or fatigue, but can quickly escalate. 'Persistent vomiting, loose stools, lethargy, dry mouth, or yellowing of the skin can indicate serious dehydration or jaundice," she cautions.
Fortunately, most of these illnesses are preventable with basic precautions. Boiling water, practising proper hand hygiene, avoiding street food, and ensuring children are vaccinated against typhoid and hepatitis are simple but effective steps. 'In high-risk areas, routine health check-ups can help catch infections early," Dr. Nagarkar adds.
While monsoons bring cooler temperatures and green landscapes, they also demand greater vigilance. With the right preventive measures and timely medical care, families can safeguard their children's health and let them enjoy the season safely.
In a season where joy and illness often go hand in hand, awareness remains a family's strongest ally. As infections rise, so does the need for proactive parenting and community-level sanitation efforts. 'It's not just about treating the illness, it's about preventing it before it reaches our children," Dr. Nagarkar emphasises.
With simple, consistent care and timely intervention, families can turn the tide against monsoon-related health threats.

Cancer care projects launched in 3 Punjab districts

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Chandigarh, Jul 30 (PTI) The Punjab government, in partnership with WHO, has launched a pilot cancer care project each in Bathinda, Mohali, and Gurdaspur, Health Minister Balbir Singh said on Wednesday. This initiative is aimed at early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of oral, breast, and cervical cancers – three of the most prevalent and preventable cancers in India, he said. The move aligns with the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, and strives to integrate cancer care across Punjab's public health system, right from Ayushman Arogya Kendras at the grassroots to advanced hospitals. In Punjab, at present, over 60 per cent of cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, leaving limited scope for effective intervention, the minister said. 'Cancer does not mean death. It is very much curable if diagnosed in time. Early detection is the keystone of cancer care. This initiative is a reflection of our belief in health as a fundamental right and our resolve to build a resilient and inclusive health system for all," he said. Balbir Singh also claimed unhealthy lifestyles and poor dietary habits were critical contributors to rising cancer incidents, advised against leading a sedentary lifestyle. Dr Roderico H Ofrin, the WHO representative to India, praised the initiative, Mission Umeed, and said that it stands out as a leader in cancer care in the country. 'WHO is proud to be a partner in this important initiative, and will continue offering its full technical support to make this model a replicable success across India," he said. The pilot adopts a three-tier model and offers a wide range of interventions, such as universal screening of individuals aged 30 and above, bolstering frontline workers and clinical staff, follow-up and referral systems, and digital monitoring via the NP-NCD portal. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to contest general election, says party leader

Dhaka, Jul 30 (PTI) Khaleda Zia, the chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former premier, will contest the upcoming general election, her party leader said on Wednesday. BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo said the 79-year-old party chief is doing well and she will contest the election, the Daily Star newspaper reported. 'She will be elected from Feni because she is now in good health," Mintoo told reporters after a views-exchange meeting organised by the Feni district administration. On his discussions with Zia's son and acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman, who is in London, Mintoo said that they believe the election will be held in the first week of February. 'I think, considering the current situation of the country, the election may be held even before February. Because there is a pending case in the Supreme Court regarding the caretaker government. If a caretaker government is introduced, the election must be held within 90 days," he was quoted as saying by the paper. Zia returned to Dhaka from London in May after four months of medical treatment. She went to London in January for advanced medical care and was admitted to The London Clinic. Zia has long suffered from liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis. The BNP chairperson was lodged in the Old Dhaka Central Jail on February 8, 2018, after the Dhaka court sentenced her in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the then Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government temporarily released Zia from jail after 776 days through an executive order, suspending her sentence on March 25, 2020, with conditions that she would stay in her house and not leave the country. On August 6 last year, after the ouster of the Hasina regime, Zia was freed by an order of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. In March, Bangladesh's Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling that acquitted Zia in a corruption case in which she was sentenced to seven years in jail by a lower court. Zia now stands acquitted in both the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust cases, in which she had previously been convicted and sentenced. She served as the prime minister of Bangladesh from March 1991 to March 1996, and again from June 2001 to October 2006. Odisha Deputy CM launches campaign to boost anganwadi centres

Bhubaneswar, Jul 30 (PTI) Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Wednesday launched a fortnightly campaign aimed at strengthening anganwadi centres across the state. Parida unveiled the 'Aasa Jiba Anganwadi' campaign, which will run from August 1-15, while inaugurating a state-level capacity building workshop for Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) here. He appealed to people to visit their nearest anganwadi centres, assess cleanliness, infrastructure and functioning, and share the feedback for improvement in services. The campaign aligns with the World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7) and aims to foster community ownership of early childhood development, officials said. 'The strength of our child development efforts lies in the capability of the CDPOs at the grassroots level," Parida said. She emphasised that Odisha's vision of becoming a malnutrition-free state by 2036 depends on empowering frontline leaders, and CDPOs play a central role in this transformation. During the occasion, she also launched the 'Anganwadi Welfare and Service Oversight Monitoring Everywhere (AWESOME)' app – a digital tool designed to strengthen infrastructure monitoring and service delivery at anganwadi centres. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, speaking at the event, asked the CDPOs to adopt people-centric strategies, noting the central role of health, nutrition and early childhood education in the 'Vision Odisha 2036' framework. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between the Women & Child Development Department and the National Institute of Public Cooperation & Child Development (NIPCCD) to ensure continuous training and capacity building of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) officers and staff in Odisha.
