'People want to connect with people' - Māori tourism leads the way

Māori tourism is on the rise, and operators say the key to its continued success is offering authentic cultural experiences.
A recent report showed Māori tourism contributed $1.2 billion to the economy in 2023, up by nearly 25 percent from $975 million in 2018.
Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa general manager Debbie Robertson said her business wove storytelling and culture into its offering for visitors.
"People want to connect with people and that's what makes it different," she said.
"Anyone can go anywhere and sit in... mineral water. It's around the world but what the difference is is the connection to the culture and the people and what we're able to offer."
Māori tourism businesses across the motu offered a chance for manuhiri to connect with culture through experiences and helped Aotearoa to stand out, she said.
"Many of our people that are offering products across Aotearoa are very humble and they need to elevate their price point," Robertson said.
"People will pay to experience what they have and connect with them and our culture, and don't be shy about doing that. Be unapologetically Māori."
Ngāi Tahu Tourism general manager Jolanda Cave said Māori tourism was leading the way thanks to more collaboration between operators.
"It has to be authentic or it actually isn't going to be an amazing manuhiri experience," she said.
"We hold ourselves to account in that space all the time. It's also why it takes time to enhance your product and your delivery and do it well in an authentic way. You can't do it overnight cos then it wouldn't really be an authentic experience."
The industry was preparing for big changes in how tomorrow's tourists plan, book and engage on their future holidays.
It expected many travellers would be younger, digital-savvy and on the search for special experiences as well as older, well-off retirees.
"We're storytellers. We use our voice and we use it well so regardless of how they're travelling whether it's virtually, whether they're still coming to our location, we're still going to be sharing our story in an authentic way, just potentially delivering it in a different means," she said.
New Zealand Māori Tourism board chair Dale Stephens said businesses had put in some hard mahi to help the industry grow.
The government wanted to ramp up international visitor numbers in a bid to double the value of tourism exports by 2034.
But he wanted more of a focus on offering high quality, authentic, immersive experiences, saying visitors wanted to experience life through a different lens.
"If we use that as the focal point, making sure that we treat our manuhiri, our guests, as family and wanting to look after them, give them a great experience, and be prepared to welcome them back time and time again, I think that's the real secret for having successful tourism in this country," he said.
Stephens did not want to see the return of pre-pandemic pressure points where popular destinations suffered from being overused.
"We need to educate the tourism sector that some fantastic tourism opportunities exist away from the main trunk lines and that will spread the load and spread the opportunity across the country."
Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive Rebecca Ingram said a regular survey of overseas visitors showed culture was a drawcard for travellers.
"Thirteen percent of them were inspired to come to New Zealand because of our culture and our heritage and so I see that number continuing to grow as we build the profile and deeper understanding of Māori culture in New Zealand," she said.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon had high hopes for the future of Māori tourism.
"Māori tourism can do so well and it always has done so well," he said.
"I've been offshore with Māori tourism operators on visits in my past life as well, and I reckon they do the best.
"They do so well because they just connect culturally and they connect through the culture and they build great relationships and they've got some of our highest quality products."
The government's roadmap for the tourism industry was expected to be released soon.

RNZ-Reid Research poll: Most New Zealanders don't think Trump's presidency been good for NZ

Photo: ANNA MONEYMAKER / Getty Images via AFP Just 8.9 percent of New Zealanders feel the second Donald Trump presidency has been good for New Zealand, according to the latest RNZ-Reid Research poll. Supporters of every political party in Parliament took a more negative view of the presidency than positive, though there are still many who are neutral on the man in the Oval Office. On a foreign policy front, Trump's second term has been dominated by the stop-start tariffs, as the US seeks to rebalance what it says has been an uneven trading playing field. New Zealand has not been immune from the tariffs , though whether they are as reciprocal as the White House says has been a source of frustration for the government. In the latest poll, 1008 respondents were asked: "US President Donald Trump has recently completed 100 days in office for his second term. How do you think his presidency has been for New Zealand?" In total, 44.4 percent of voters said the presidency had been bad for New Zealand, while 8.9 percent said it had been good. However, many do not have a view either way, with 35.8 saying they were neutral, while 10.9 percent said they did not know. Broken down to party allegiances, the gap between good and bad was even wider for Labour and Green supporters. Half of Labour voters said it had been bad, compared to 3.3 percent who said it was good. Almost 59 percent (58.7) of Green voters said bad, 4.8 percent said good. In April, Trump announced a 10 percent tariff on New Zealand goods , on top of existing tariffs. Officials swiftly worked to understand how the tariff was calculated, given New Zealand's rate is 1.9 percent. The government's response in the meantime has been to keep its head down, saying a trade war is in nobody's best interests. "To show that with the international headwinds being what they are, and Donald Trump's punitive tariff measures, that we can take steps locally to build our own economic resilience so that we're not relying on international shareholders, which seems to be the strategy of this government," she said. While 13.6 percent of Te Pati Māori voters said Trump had been good for New Zealanders, those who said he had been bad and those who were neutral were relatively evenly split. While more supporters of government parties also said the presidency had been bad for New Zealand than good, the gaps were tighter, with many also staying neutral. Of National voters, 8.4 percent said it had been good, but more were slightly more neutral than negative. A quarter of ACT supporters were positive, but the remainder were also closely split between bad and neutral. "I'm the foreign minister. I don't talk about other countries' politics, particularly when doing so might harm our country's trading interests," he said. The Prime Minister was also staying diplomatic. "Look, it's not for me to say. I'm just focused on what New Zealand needs to do to sail its boat in what are more turbulent waters, for sure, to make sure that we can realise all the great potential we have in this country. That's what we're focused on," Christopher Luxon said. This poll of 1008 people was conducted by Reid Research, using quota sampling and weighting to ensure representative cross section by age, gender and geography. The poll was conducted through online interviews between 23-30 May 2025 and has a maximum margin of error of +/- 3.1 percent at a 95 percent confidence level. The report is available here . Fisher Funds to invest $300m in New Zealand businesses

Photo: Supplied / Fisher Funds KiwiSaver provider Fisher Funds says it will invest up to a billion dollars over the next three to five years in private equity, such as unlisted businesses. It will add private equity to four of its KiwiSaver schemes. Chief investment officer Ashley Gardyne said it should improve the returns for those schemes, and would give investors access to growing businesses at a time when fewer were listing on stock markets. "There's also a broader benefit, as more people push into private markets, more money flows into the real economy and that has a positive impact on New Zealand business formation." He said about $300 million of the $1 billion could be invested in New Zealand businesses. There were about 1000 businesses in the likely target range of being worth $20m and $100m in this country, he said. Fisher Funds would be looking for stable businesses that had been around a long time, in areas of growth. "We'd like the management team to be involved and ultimately be investors alongside us." He said there were liquidity risks with private equity investments but KiwiSaver was a long-term savings vehicle, which aligned with the longer-term nature of private equity. "When you commit to buying a private business, you're often invested for five or seven years. You need to make sure it's only a portion of KiwiSaver funds. In Australia, up to 20 percent of super is in unlisted investments. We'll be starting at a much lower level." It would scale up to 10 percent over the next five years. The benefit for investors would be in higher returns, he said. "If you look at the balance of a 20-year-old, even an extra half-percent over the long term could potentially result in another $100,000 at retirement. KiwiSaver providers hope public support for contribution increases will see default rates move higher

The latest RNZ-Reid Research poll included questions about the changes to the KiwiSaver scheme announced in the Budget. From 1 April next year, the default contribution rate for employers and employees will rise to 3.5 percent. The following April, it will be 4 percent. But the government will halve the credit it offers to people who contribute at least $1042 a year to their KiwiSaver, to a maximum $260.72. It will not be available to people earning more than $180,000. The poll showed a total of 61.2 percent of respondents supported the contribution change, 21.4 percent opposed it and 17.4 percent were not sure. Among National voters, almost 80 percent supported the change. But only 23.7 percent of total voters supported the move to halve the contribution rate, and fewer than half of National supporters. Fisher Funds chief investment officer Ashley Gardyne said he was not surprised by the findings. He said we should not stop at 4 percent plus 4 percent, and should push towards higher contribution rates. "I think it's really positive we've seen the contribution rates increase, and ultimately if we want people to get to the right amount of savings in retirement those rates do need to move up through time." He said the Australian model, where contribution rates slowly lifted over a number of years, could be one to follow. "They took a really long-term, 10-year approach of increasing contributions by a little bit every year. The reality is it's tough to find extra money in your pay cheque to put into KiwiSaver but it is really important long-term as well to make sure you end up in the right position for retirement. "Having a long-term vision like that is really important." Read more: Australia soon to be second in world for retirement savings as superannuation pool soars Kirk Hope, chief executive of the Financial Services Council, which represents KiwiSaver providers, agreed the results were expected. "We've known for some time that in terms of contributions those will be relatively well received. Obviously it's a bit tougher if the government contribution is being halved or in some cases removed that's not going to be particularly popular, the key thing is the government continues to contribute something." He said there should be a bipartisan agreement about a long-term strategy for retirement income. He said it was also worth discussing other steps the government could take, such as adjusting the tax settings. "Other changes the government might be able to make to the tax system in the future to continue to incentivise particularly savings and even up the playing field between savings and investment and housing. That's some fundamental shifts in the tax system." Ana-Marie Lockyer, chief executive at Pie Funds, said it was good to see that most people supported the contribution increase. "In terms of the halving of the government contributions we need to acknowledge the government faced some hard choices as a result of the tight fiscal environment. But I believe we should be offering more incentives for Kiwis to save for their retirement, not fewer. "Reducing the government contribution is more likely to impact the retirement balances of lower income earners - a group who deserve the same opportunities as everyone else." She said even a reduced contribution of $261 a year could grow to more than $40,000 over a person's working life. "I think what's more important than the dollar amount of the government contribution is the number of Kiwis who don't receive it, either because they're not eligible or they're not contributing enough. "While it's a good thing that the government contributions are now available for 16- and 17-year-olds, I think the government missed a trick by not extending it to the increasing number of over-65s who are still working, whether by choice or necessity. "What's probably more concerning is the thousands of KiwiSavers missing out on the MTC government contribution each year because they're not contributing enough to qualify, leaving millions of dollars on the table. "So the poll is actually a timely reminder for people to ensure they've contributed at least $1043 by 30 June in order to receive the full government contribution of $521 - before it reduces to $261 next year." Photo: RNZ / Mark Papalii A spokesperson for Finance Minister Nicola Willis said the changes to KiwiSaver were designed to help Kiwis to save more and make the scheme more fiscally sustainable. "For example, an 18-year-old earning the minimum wage of just under $49,000 a year who invests in a balanced fund can expect to have almost $910,000 in KiwiSaver at age 65. Under the old settings it would have been about $732,000. "The results are similar for most other people. The Retirement Commissioner estimates the changes will increase retirement savings for about 80 percent of KiwiSaver members."
